All those who would like to see the older Pennsylvania death certificates go on-line, don't raise your hand. Instead, go to http://users.rcn.com/timarg/PaHR-Access.htm This not only drags PA into the 21st century but will also save you a few bucks when you need information on a death certificate.

Dear List, We have placed the complete 1946 Pittsburgh Phone Directory online at: http://directory.evendon.com <http://directory.evendon.com/> We hope you find it useful. We are slowing shooting and placing all our books up. Everything on our site is free and permanent. Don akadonnew@verizon.net
Dear Gina, The Allegheny County Register has records beginning in 1885. The first index book, 1885-1925, may also be found on microfilm at the Carnegie Library in Oakland. The library also has on microfilm and possibly in a print book minister returns from 1875-1885 I think. I'm sure others on the list know the precise limits of those records. I think that the Western PA Genealogical Society has published a book of these early minister returns. It's on their website and probably in the Carnegie catalogue. There is also an index of births, deaths, and marriages for 1852-1854 covering the entire Commonwealth county by county. There are also numerous extant church records covering the period in which you are interested. I have on a family relative of mine from the Diocese of Pittsburgh - it is information about Leonard Schuck marriage to Mariam Scheitz and it shows a witness - Joannes Geissler. The name is in the latin form. My family is Leonard Schuck and it is dated March 13, 1882. Could this be a relative of yours? I know nothing about the Geisslers. The problem is that each big tract of land was broken into 10s of tracts each with separate lot and block numbers in the 1940s after the war. Originally I had intended to do exactly what you suggested, but the people at the Recorder of Deeds office convinced me that it would take hours and hours. I had hoped that the property history cards which they have in Room 303 might allow me to find the current location, but one has to have a lot and block and the histories do not go back farther than 1948. We are talking about 110 years of subdividing the farm. So, thanks for the tip about the id numbers. I will go out to Forliview Road and have a look around. Dear Deb, It sounds like it would be worthwhile to track through the deeds on at least one of the properties to the present. Once you have the name and present day description of the location of the property, you can find it on the Assessment site: http://www2.county.allegheny.pa.us/RealEstate/Search.asp Notice that each property there has a parcel ID. The first 3 fields of this ID are almost the same for adjacent properties. So once you have a parcel ID for one of the properties, you can find the others, see the names of the owners and addresses, and lay them out on one of Internet mapping facilities or even use the one right on the assessment site itself. I can help with the Assessment lookups if there is something you want to do which their search doesn't seem to allow. Dear Bea, George Pohrer shows up in the 1900 City Directory on our website. Our 1946 phone book, not yet online, also shows a George and it shows a Mary Helen Pohrer, a registered nurse. We do have nursing school alumni directories in the "Small Books" section of our site for Mercy, Passavant, Allegheny General, and West Penn. This Mary Helen also may appear in the Secretary of State's online professional license registry. Dear Pittsburgh List, We're excited to report that we've purchased the Centennial Book for the 1st Presbyterian Church here in Pittsburgh. The book was published in 1884 and covers the 100 year period: 1784-1884. We will be placing it online as soon as we receive it along with a number of old pamphlet size publications we have collected from other churches in the area. We will place these in the "Religious Community" SMALL BOOKS on our website: http://www.evendon.com Eve and Don Krieger
