Ray, According to my wife's aunt, Kathryn Kelly Schwirian, in her book, "Six Generations of an Irish-American Family", Jean Adolphe Menjou was born in the village of Commune D'Arbus, located between Pau and Lourdes, in France. He did live in Pittsburgh after 1886, and managed the Duquesne Hotel here. He married a distant cousin (Nora Joyce) of my wife's, and later owned the Cafe Royal on Fifth Ave. He left Pittsburgh in about 1897 and moved to Cleveland. Larry Hunt Pittsburgh
Hi all, Not long ago people were talking about the cemetery on Arlington Ave, Prince of Peace Parish. This weekend I was in Pgh, visiting relatives (I'm in Charlotte, NC), so I went up To St. Adalbert's Cemetery in Carrick. On the south side cemetery is a section I'll call the Pauper's section. In this section many of the headstones are knocked down and/or broken, it is very overgrown (you can't even get back to many of the graves), the ground has sunk inside the concrete edge of the grave, and in several, there are trees 24" in diameter growing out of the grave. I must say that most of the cemetery is well taken care of. On the bright side, I did find my Grandmother Mary Cichowicz in the 1927 section of the area! Her oldest son, Joseph (1905 - 1981) made the headstones for her and Michal Cichowicz who died in 1934. I couldn't find him or my GGrandmother Anna. I'll do another search next time I go to Pgh. One of his last movies was "Paths of Glory" with Kirk Douglas. It was about the mutinies in the French army during World War I. He always played the sophisticated, debonair gentleman type. He was a good actor who started out in silent movies. I'm old enough to remember him well in many movies. I didn't know he was from Pgh. though. Do you know if Menjou was his real name, or only assumed for movie work? Hi fellow listers, I have indexed the 1900 Federal Census for Allegheny City, PA (Pittsburgh's Northside). For those unaware, Allegheny City was separate from Pittsburgh in 1900 and so those enumerated there will not show up in the Pittsburgh census. If you had ancestors living in this area in 1900 and can't find them, perhaps I can. I have no other areas except Allegheny City. Some of the pages are badly discolored, much of the hand-writing is terrible and the spelling is even worse. I make no promises, but have helped several people find their families and will be happy to give yours a try (at no cost, of course). Please send as much information as possible: names, streets, siblings, parents, children, occupation, approximate years of birth. Sometimes even in-law names are helpful. Let's not clog up the mailing list. Send your request to my personal address and have patience. I will answer you one way or the other. God bless America, Barb babarnes@nauticom.net
Jeff, I have the 1900 Federal Census for Allegheny City. It is separate from the Pittsburgh census, perhaps that's why you couldn't find them. The bread works faces both Charles and Brighton Road, maybe if you look in the Pittsburgh City Directory's for that time frame you might find the Bakery listed there. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Al Lenkner" <alenkner@stargate.net> To: <PA-PITTSBURGH-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, October 16, 2001 1:17 PM Subject: Re: [PITTSBURGH] Muellerschoen > Jeff, > > There aren't any bakeries on Charles St. There is one close by - > Breadworks - but the building was built specifically for their use several > years ago. I wondered if anyone had any background on this movie character actor from the thirties and forties. I know he was born in Pittsburgh in 1890, and, tracking the city directories, his family seems to have left the 'burgh around 1900. Family legend has it that somewhere along the line there is a connection between his family and mine. Ray Boniker researching McMAHON, OWENS, FRANKHOUSE, McCAFFREY, McCABE, CAMPBELL in Pittsburgh.
Jeff, There aren't any bakeries on Charles St. There is one close by - Breadworks - but the building was built specifically for their use several years ago. Charles St is now pretty much a ghetto. My Grandfathers second wife was Anna Marie Muellerschoen. I believe she was born in this country but her parents were born in Germany. Don't know where in Germany. Her parents had a bakery at 114 Charles Street in Allegheny City which was still being operated by them in 1903. I have an advertising calendar from 1903 which lists the business as "C. Muellerschoen". Does anyone have any knowledge of this family or the bakery? Does the site still exist? Census records have been of no help. Jeff Haberman
I can't remember if I responded, but I don't really think she could be alive. It's been 30+, since my grandma probably wrote that, unless she (Sarah) was young when she lived there in Pittsburgh. I had my grandma's address book, & every once in a while i look back & see if I can make sense of it! Thanks Al. Anyone know what this place might be now? Any suggestions, please post. Well, I've been made a lurker by default. The computer crashed early August, and although it is fixed, it is not exactly fully functioning yet. We've had memory loss. Unfortunately, with other things happening, the computer is low on the totem pole and I still have to go elswhere to check my mail. Sigh. Bonnie

I thought y'all might enjoy this: Yesterday morning I found an e-mail identified as from the 'International program Fund for the Apprehension of Terrorists and Dangerous Criminals' ... which announced they will accept donations and assistance...to 'uncover and punish terroists (sic) organizations headed by Osama bin Laden'. It went on to furnish information; "roting" (sic) number, account number, name etc. of a Texas bank to send donations to. The name on the account, real or imagined, was Russian. What struck me as humorous was the P.S. attached which asked if anyone had information where Osama Bin Laden is right now please send it to (e-mail address). The first thing that crossed my mind - shall we check our local telephone directories, or perhaps call our local "spook" to inquire. I forwarded the message to the local FBI office which acknowledged receipt and added it would be forwarded to the "Command Post". So the scammers are working, but this one was at least funny. Would like to know what Catholic Church, probably Polish/Germ, would have been in the 7th Ward of Pittsburgh in l880. The census indicates my grgrandfather lived on Fifth Ave. This would maybe help me to narrow down the info to write for church records. By the way, there was a very nice article on Pittsburgh on the front page of the Travel Section of the LA Times today. I've never been there, but enjoyed reading about it...especially the growth. Makes you want to visit! With appreciation, Nancy C. in CA
