Al, you seem to know Pittsburgh well. Trinity Church at 25th and Smallman in the Strip District; do you happen to know who owns the building? Do you happen to know what it's last denominational affiliation was? When it was last used as a church? Family history states that one of my great grandmothers is buried there and I would like to know who to contact for info. Jean, There hasn't been anything that could be called a house at 2nd and Bates for the last 50 years and I doubt if there was much in the way of housing before that. Both 2nd Ave and Bates St have been around for a long time. The B & O crosses Bates on a trestle at the very bottom of Bates. Bates doesn't continue on the other side of 2nd Ave. That was J&L property as long as I can recall and was probably industrial property of some sort for at least 100 years. The remark about Bates St being in the 23rd Ward threw me off......... for a moment. I check the 1911 Historical Society's reprint to see if there was another Bates St at one time whose name had been changed. No such animal. The old 23rd Ward is now the 15th Ward and encompasses Greenfield and Hazelwood. Bates is considered part of Oakland, the 4th and formerly the 14th Ward. If there are any pictures, you would find them in the photo archives of the Historical Society or the Carnegie Library but the chances are very slim. Sharon, Glad you found the site. The two women who were working there the day I went were very knowledgeable and very helpful. Hope you get answers to your questions. Judy
Jo, where did you get the obit from the Pittsburgh Press? I'd appreciate the info, as I have some people I'd like to look up. Thanks, jean schmidt
My great-grandmother, LIZZIE LENDAK, married GEORGE YATSCO, somewhere in Pittsburgh. What I have is a death certificate of Mr. Yatsco, on which it states that he resided on Bates St. He died January 24, 1891. On May 8, 1893, she married JOHN GUJAS, my g'g'father, at St. Nicholas Greek Catholic Church in Duquesne, PA. They both stated they lived on Bates St. They lived in Pittsburgh until between 1904 and 1906, when they moved to York Run, PA. Is there any way to find out which house they lived in, and maybe get a picture or some history, i.e., was it a boarding house in those days? By the way, Mr. Yatsco lived at "2nd Ave and Bates St" and was "crushed by a B & O RR at Bates St, 23rd Ward" as stated on the death certificate. Any helpful hints out there? I have looked through some city directories in that time period, but find nothing. I also can find nothing else through the family, of which there are only two children left. Thanks for any help, jean schmidt
I didn't catch the first message, but I have "The Verona Cemetery in Oakmont, PA" book. I got it from Mechling Books in Butler a while back, and I think they said at the time, it was their last copy. What did you need? Donna

Listers, I want to thank all of you who responded. I believe that would be Lawrenceville now. Gobnait Ni Leocháin Genealogy: Where you confuse the dead and irritate the living.

I have not done much research on the Steen line since it is not a direct relationship so I can't give much help as far as Mary Jane Steen Logan. Stella Steen was the daughter of William John Steen and Sarah Ireland (daughter of Thomas & Jane Ireland). My gg granduncle, James Samuel Montgomery, was first married to Jennie Ireland, whom I believe to be Sarah Ireland's sister since Stella and 2 young siblings are buried in James Montgomery lot in Allegheny cemetery. William John Steen was the son of David Steen and Mary Dickson. David and Mary, according to his biography in the "History of Allegheny County" had 5 living children when the bio was written: William John Steen, Thomas D. Steen, James B. Steen, Margaret Steen Walker, and Rachel Steen Blackmore. (The last name is so similar to your Rachel Moore Steen that maybe there is a connection?) The family was Presbyterian. Jo
Hi, Judy, Thank you for the site - worked first time, so perhaps the problem is with your system. Thought I'd pass along to anyone else who might be interested - the Society does searches, $15.00 per hour for nonmembers and $10.00 for member. For those of us out of the state, it sounds like a great source.
