I don't know if the training is different now but when I was sent to Korea in the fifties we were told it is better to wound the enemy than kill him. An army could be totally crippled by a lot of wounded because the logistics to provide the care takes an incredible amount of people and resources as opposed to just leaving the dead laying around. I don't think I am a trained killer. I have fired 30 and 50 caliber machine guns, M1 and Carbine rifles, 45 caliber side arms. Also some artillery and B.A.R. weapons. I am home for almost 50 years and have yet to find a need to purchase a weapon or gun of any kind. Having said that I am absolutely opposed to gun control of almost any kind. I am for nutso control though. Best regards, Walt
Nancy, I don't know where you got the idea but all military people are not trained killers. What every recruit undergoes in basic or boot is firearm instruction: how to clean, load, dismantle and fire the weapon(s) of the day. After boot camp or basic training, you transfer to a specialty school where you study whatever field your entrance exams show your aptitude to be, whether mechanical, electrical, electronics, administration, cooking, firefighters, police........... whatever. All military installations are like small towns and are pretty self-sufficient. Al At 12:31 AM 10/29/2001, you wrote: >Just wanted to add that my sister, who is a retired Lt. Just wanted to add that my sister, who is a retired Lt. Commander in the NAVY was stationed at the NATO installation in Iceland during Desert Storm. She was in communications and said they had multiple threats each and every day she was there and we would be surprised how many were stopped. Maybe what we (meaning the average citizen) don't know did hurt us. Or maybe it had been building up for longer than we realize. Don't know. Another thing to remember is that all military personnel are basically trained killers. It is their job and for a LONG time they have NOT had to do their "job". I am not trying to lay blame, but am trying to get it all straight in MY head. Did any of you out there suffer a close loss? Our son's boss was on one of the planes that hit the WTC. And the TJX company (TJMAXX & Marshall's) lost 7 people. I used to work for Marshall's. I agree that we need to work as a team and stay united. God Bless America. Nancy

Cora, I can believe it. It's been a problem for a long time - that's why I hate this "blaming" one party or the other. Let's correct the problem and go on about the business of running the country - as a team! Thanks for the link - aren't computers great - instant access to all this information even if we missed the programs when they were aired! Nancy, Congratulations on your success. My ancestors weren't hatched from eggs, they just dropped out of the sky and took on some sort of human form during the drop. They have no pasts.......I'm convinced of this. That's terrific though, that you were able to connect with someone that had pictures and other documents no less. What a find! Nancy Congratulations I know you must be thrilled Donna
Hi gen pals, This rhymes with "pen pals" and I just had to write and tell everyone my recent success story. All of us have put messages out on message boards, surname forums, etc. We loose track and come to the conclusion that our ancestors hatched from eggs. Well, I had a response to a message I had posted a LONG time ago about my mother's side of the family. She is descended from Heike - changed to Heck sometimes, and Steinke, changed to Stankey sometimes. I do have a 651 page book of family trees and lots of stories done back in 1982, and have been putting all the names into my Family Tree Maker - over 5200 so far. I listed some of the more common surnames and "Kim" from Canada emailed me. We have exchanged no fewer than 25 emails of information, photos, family trees, and wedding and death notices. She is going to mail me the originals of those I am directly descended from. I am mailing her the family trees of her direct descendants. We still don't know exactly how we connect - maybe 5th cousins or something like that, but I just want to say - don't give up. When you least expect it, you get a hit and those old folks come to life once again. Happy hunting, Nancy
Sue - I was certain some of my ancestors were dropped from the same source as yours and then one day a descendant of my grandfather's sister contacted me - just like Nancy - after a message had been on a board for about a year. The difference is, she knew very little about my grandfather and any of his other siblings or his parents, but knowing the name and family of his sister is a start - a lot more than I knew before! So don't give up. Congratulations, Nancy and thanks for sharing with us - the thrill of finding another cousin and learning something about your ancestors is soooo exciting...we're excited for you! Hi Sue You are the one that makes it work so good. Barb
Ed, You hit it right on when you said the president has to have the support of the people and Congress - Clinton didn't. It's really sad an event as devastating as Sept. 11 had to happen so the support of the nation would allow our president to take action. I hope the support and comaradrie shown recently puts an end to this Republicans against Democrats and our leaders get on with what they are elected to do - work together for our country - and in turn, the world. That's my 2 cents worth! Marilyn G. ----- Original Message ----- From: Ed To: PA-PITTSBURGH-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Thursday, October 25, 2001 9:20 PM Subject: Re: [PITTSBURGH] Something to think about Until the incident of Sept. 11, 2001 the nation would not tolerate such action as a war. After Sept. 11th they will support such actions that are now going on. Apparently it took a devastating act for America to support extensive military engagement. Plus the fact that anytime Clinton took military action everyone said he was only doing so to distract from his political problems. One must have the support of the country before you place people in harms way.
