The Riddles are part of the family of Conrad and Margaret Sylvis that I've been working on. They are cousins of my mother's. I'm just trying to collect info about this family. My mother's sister , Olive Stubbins, taught school in Mt Lebanan. Is that part of the Pittsburgh school system? Marcia Norton
I don't know.....they probably would, but I'm not sure about the privacy laws....what specifically are you looking for? Are they ancestors of yours, or former teachers that you had, or what? I don't know what the policy is on that sort of thing. Fred (Or Mac, whichever you prefer), >From the info that I found, Langley HS opened in April, 1923. Without knowing, historically, what other high schools were in the area, I can't honestly tell you where she may have gone to school at. But she would have been 18 in 1920, and that was 3 years before Langley opened, so I think that's a definate negative. You might try requesting her records from Riverside, here at the board....that's MY best guess (and only a guess). WHo knows, you might get lucky. > What I would like to know is if there are directories for 1908 and a few years before which might give addresses for him?< Ed, absolutely you should check the city directories for addresses of your ancestors! (They go at least back to the 1850s, all on microfilm.) When I couldn't find my ancestors in Cincinnati census records because they mutilated the name spellings, I resorted to looking up the street address itself in the census reports, taken from the city directories. Viola - I found everyone living right where I knew they had to be - with names misspelled almost beyond recognition. My Pittsburgh ancestors lived in the German area of Spring Garden and Troy Hill, and the city directories show them with seven different addresses over a ten year period, all within close proximity of each other. You will find the communities you listed for your ancestors all within reach of each other (Avalon, Bellevue, Ben Avon). Hi, I only just recently joined this list and have enjoyed the friendly banter. You all seem pretty knowledgeable and so I would like to ask a question or two about where my great-grandfather lived. He died in 1908 and according to his obituaries and another source he lived in Avalon, Bellevue and Church Avenue, Ben Avon I don't know why each source has a different place. I have a map and can see that they are all close to each other along the Ohio river. What I would like to know is if the are directories for 1908 and a few years before which might give addresses for him? Also in the obits he at one time owned a cafe and restaurant called The Club on Masters way and when he died he had offices in the Maeder Building at 435 Fifth Avenue. Has anyone heard of the Maeder Building? I doubt it is there today. - Ed
There is no doubt that local chapters of the Red Cross do important work. I have read that local charities have been suffering from lack of funds due to the National charities receiving the funds for N.Y. I agree with Sandy. The national media appeal by the Red Cross using the N. Y. disaster for donations did lead the public to believe that the money was going directly to the families of the victims of the disaster. It is really a shame that the public wasn't given a chance to make informed choices as to where to donate their money. Maybe the safest way is to give money is to donate to your local homeless shelters and battered women safe houses. Better still, maybe we all need to volunteer some of our time to help those in need. Marilyn; Lake Co., IL ----- Original Message ----- From: "Sandy Laurie" <sandylaurie@alltel.net> To: <PA-PITTSBURGH-L@rootsweb.com> : Anna, I can see your point of view, but I believe the general public was deceived. The Red Cross, upfront, should have said that all the donations would not go to WTC disaster relief . . . then John Q. Public could decide if he wanted to donate to the Red Cross or another fund that specified all monies would go to NY disaster relief . . . or to the police and firemen's fund directly. Those donating were not given that option. : : Sandy :

Listers, Some of you may recall that I made negative comments about the Red Cross and United Fund soliciting donations for the victims of New York, Washington and Westmoreland County. I just received this from my cousin Peggy who lives in Kansas. I had heard rumors to this effect but don't watch TV often, save the news. Peggy didn't write this. She just sent it to a few friends and relatives but I thought that it was important that others, who aren't glued to the boob tube, might be warned against further solicitations. This is exactly as received from Peggy but I eliminated the '>' marks for easier reading. Al 911 Donations At the latest count, over 1 billion dollars has been raised by donations of the public in the name of helping firefighters, police and other victims of the 9-11 emergencies in NYC and Washington, DC. There are about 6000 victims. $1,000,000,000 split 6000 ways $167,000 per family of each victim. Less than $3000 per family has actually been given out or allocated by these do-good organizations. As was reported on the O'Reilly Report, organizations like United way have not given any money at all even though they have collected $150 million in the name of the victims. They said that they will "withhold" (keep) 15% of the total monies for their efforts in collecting the money and only pass 85% down to other organizations who will also withhold some percentage of the money for their administrative costs such as salaries, offices, utilities and other operational costs of those charities. SO this crisis is windfall for these organizations. I am outraged at this and asking why my senator and representative don't demand a governmental inquiry and accounting. In my opinion this is a much bigger deal than the few gas stations who have spiked prices immediately following the attacks. Please do your part and start to ask where is the money? Who got it, where, when and why? At the same time that some organizations have become unduly rich over this tragedy, most other philanthropic organizations have become poor and report that they have hardly received any donations since Sept 11th. Rush Limbaugh, Oprah Winfrey, and Bill O'Reilly have said they will stick with this story until all the money is accounted for, but it is clear that it is not going where we had intended it go. PS According to CNN the Red Cross stated that they were no longer going to ask for money for the 9/11 catastrophy...(they have already collected billions of money that people thought were going to the families of the ones that need help so desperately. What they have done is give the ones that can prove hardship money for one months rent or house payment, or other such paltry amounts.etc. PLEASE PASS THIS ON, AS I HAVE, TO AS MANY PEOPLE AS POSSIBLE. MAYBE WE WILL GET AN ANSWER FROM SOMEWHERE!
