    3. Fellow rooter, You must have misplaced your "welcome message" you received when you signed on with the instructions to 'unsubscribe'. All rootsweb lists are automatic and use the same method, as follows: Mail to: WhatEverName (example FAMILY=ORIGINS-USERS)-L-request@rootsweb.com put nothing in the subject line put only " subscribe" or "unsubscribe " in the message box without the " " The key word is adding "request" just ahead of @. To resubscribe, just put subscribe in the message box. Mac

    1. [PITTSBURGH] Early Pgh shows
    2. John
    3. I know this isn't genealogy, but... In the early days of TV in Pgh, The Howdy Doody show on the DuMont Network, came on every day, I believe. Also Andy Devine had a Saturday show, with Froggy the Gremlin ("Plunk your magic twanger, Froggy"). This line started the cartoons. When I went to Humboldt School ('51 - '57) on 19th & Sarah S.S.(presently Phillips School) we used to go home for lunch. Right after the 15 minute news on KDKA (as I recall,) Hank Stohl and Knish came on. I remember watching it every school day. Does any one remember Josie Carey's story hour? I'm pretty sure it was a fore-runner of Mr. Rogers neighborhood. Part of Mr. Rogers' set, the castle, King, etc. were from her show as I recall. We went to WQED one school year and watched Josie talking to those characters. Also, Clark Race Dance show on Saturday afternoons (KDKA I believe). One last name, Reg Cordic on KDKA. A few great memories... John Cichowicz formerly of the Sahside

    3. To All .... I have inquired as to the setting up of a list for PAPITTSBURGH-Memories and will let all know what I hear. They may suggest we go over to PAALLEGHENY-Memories. There is also a possibility of setting up a list independently. Any who are interested in this, please contact me at diane@haqa.co.uk and I will pass along details and additional information. Sincerely, Diane M. Hungate

    3. Hi Diane all, WE must've been little about the same time, though figure your alittle older. I think I might recall the soaps after the news with Bill Burns. Those others no. I just put my son on the bus this year, so I've been watching Mr. Rodgers the past 10 years with both my kids! I would hope since our beloved Mr. Rodgers is retiring, I certainly hope they put some older folks on TV instead of puppet programs, though PBS has a great program "Between the Lions" that is a great "words show" with puppets! The main characters "mom dad Lion "run a library have songs with rhyming words while reading stories, the words are on the screen interacting of the books with the reader. It's great! And computers sometimes! The interaction between people is so important to the kids. I remember. By the way, whatever happened to Bill Cardill? Is he still in Pittsburgh? Cathy Raber ----- Original Message ----- From: Diane Hungate To: pigeonrock@earthlink.net Sent: 11/17/01 5:19:47 AM Subject: Re: [PITTSBURGH] WTAE-TV Wow...now that does bring back some wonderful memories. I know Mr. Rogers is still with us, but haven't heard of Paul Shannon in ages. I will ask my cousins back in the 'burgh if they know anything. When I was young and watching that show, I thought that Paul Shannon and Moe were cousins. Don't ask....when you are litte, you see things differently :) Does anyone also remember Bwana Don and the morning show with Don Riggs? How about Carl Ide? And here's a goodie..George Eisenhauer...the tall and very deep voiced announcer on KDKA? I also remember my mom telling me about the Little Red Schoolhouse (I forget the hosts name) and I do remember Kay Neuman and her cooking shows. One last bit....what about when the Guiding Light and Search for Tomorrow were 15 minutes long and right after the noon news with Bill Burns. I remember my mom folding my sister's diapers while watching that..... Needless to say I watched alot of tv when I was small. Well, hey, it was something new and exciting, so why not. Infact, I met an old school pal of mine from elementary school....I think they would like this sort of discussion there. Let me know when and if you subscribe. 1. [PITTSBURGH] To be born in Pittsburgh - is to be born with a can of Iron in one hand :)
    2. Diane Hungate
    3. So true, so true. May I please make one statement here. I too am researching my genealogy in the Pittsburgh area. My ancestors came to Hays/Homestead as early as the mid 1700's, to Allegheny City mid 1800's, from Cumberland County to Pitt Township (early Pittsburgh) in the mid 1700's, and to the mines of Plum/Penn in the early 1900's. They came from England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Slovakia and Austria-Hungary. They, like others who emmigrated to Pittsburgh, helped to make and shape Pittsburgh and its people. This includes their sense of humour, their desire to help others, their heritage, you name it. This also includes wanting to share memories of the place, the ethnic communities, the ethnic foods, school picnics at Kennywood, you name it. But genealogists should understand that genealogy isn't just cut and dry, names - dates - places. Genealogy is learning about the people, the area, the history...what it is that makes a city/county/state tick. To have a group like this where we can discuss what living in Pittsburgh is and was really like, to me as a genealogist, is a blessing in disguise. Before moving to England, I researched my Welsh heritage with many trips to Wales which included learning about the people, the food, the sense of humour. Then I could understand my Welsh ancestors and heritage. You see, it all ties in...it all is a part of being a Pittsburgher. So discussions such as this, to the professional or amateur genealogist, should be a blesing. It is sad when all that matters is filling in a chart with names and dates. That isn't genealogy...that is just compiling data. Thank you for letting me have this moment to try and explain what is is to be 'born in Pittsburgh'. If anyone out there would be interested in putting a Pittsburgh memories group together, e-mail me and I will get things started. Sincerely, Diane (Taylor) Hungate Researching: Taylor, Woozley, Gordon, Jack, Johns, Lamb, Irwin, Aber, Carroll, Bryan and a host of others - All from Pittsburgh and Proud of it!! ----- Original Message ----- From: <Markburgh1@aol.com> To: <PA-PITTSBURGH-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, November 15, 2001 10:24 PM Subject: Re: [PITTSBURGH] List owner > Before anyone gets in an uproar, I just need to butt in and say we all have > delete buttons. > > Lori > > > ==== PA-PITTSBURGH Mailing List ==== > SUE* MCALISTER-Pittsburgh List Mom > > ============================== > Search over 1 Billion names at Ancestry.com! > http://www.ancestry.com/rd/rwlist1.asp >

    3. Gee . . . it didn't mention it's Sat. afternoon "Dance Party" . . . Pittsburgh's attempt to create "Bandstand". A group of us from Penn Hills would go as often as we could get tickets. It was great fun being on TV, but not so much fun dancing outside on the concrete parking lot, which in spots was uneven and slanted! 3. ----- Original Message ----- From: Carol S. Diane, Just couldn't keep quiet any longer. Yes, I remember the Duquesne Gardens; the circus, the Ice Capades, Globe Trotters, and a popular (at that time) quartet. Carol S. By the way, anyone remember the old Duquesne Gardens??? I remember going there as a kid to a circus...was that up by where the Syria Mosque used to stand? Man, they certainly have destroyed a number of historic buildings. Infact, my daughter tells me they renamed the Civic Arena to the Mellon Arena....good grief!! Diane I guess, I have wondered why I hadn't heard about the Mosque for awhile! HOw long? Gosh I am behind the Times! I certainly remember hearing that progress is good, but Just because Mellon's are known in the area, doesn't mean that it should be named that! Though on th eother hand, I guess, why not!? They are one of the founding families in the area aren't they? Just like Carnegie others?! I'm guessing here! Yes, living in Ohio, on the edge, we'd mostly watch Channel 4 News get all the advertisements from Pittsburgh. An exciting times in the 70's 80's. My family were hard-core Steelers fans! Being in FL, now I don't hear allot about Pgh. That's why I'm on this list too! Besides for genealogy history! This is an informative list of both what's going on now, in the past. I was saddened to hear about The Burns: Patty dad, Bill, both passing! Keep reporting those things, because to those that aren't in the immediate areas, that's "news" too! 3. Would anyone be interested in a Pgh Memories group? There is also a group on rootsweb called PA Memories which is a really great place. The other day we were discussing Rege Cordic...so you might want to take a look and subscribe.
