The wagon was developed in eastern PA with a special design not to spill its contents going up or down the steep mountain slopes of the Alleghenies. Our settler ancestors were very enterprising people and developed many things like the wagon to facilitate their travel. -- Elissa ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! 1. Re: [PITTSBURGH] Travel mode 1850-1870
    2. The Forbes Road follows what is now Rt. 40 (and roughly the PA turnpike) from the eastern settlements of PA at Philadelphia to the west just south of Pittsburgh and into Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh was a common destination for those going further west as they would get on a river boat there and have access to Ohio, Kentucky, etc. all the way to New Orleans. For more information see "Indian Trails to Super Highways" by William H. Shank and "Map Guide to American Migration Routes, 1735-1815" by William Dollarhide. Besides road and rail (RRs didn't come into play until the 1850's) there was also canals. These were in existence in the east and west of the Allegheny mountains, but not through the mountains. The portage railroad would haul settlers, goods, and boats over the mountains. This had a short life time due to the slowness of canal travel vs. railroads which were improving and spreading all the time. For more information see "The Amazing Pennsylvania Canals" by William H. Shank. Hope that is helpful. -- Elissa On Fri, 28 Dec 2001 15:24:02 -0500 "Sue M" <starshine166@attbi.com> writes: > Carol, > I would think that it would have to have been by rail, or the good > old > fashioned horse and buggy. > Sue* > ----- Original Message ----- > > > Can anyone tell me what would be the most common, affordable, mode > of > travel, East to West in Pennsylvania in the mid to late 1800's? > Would it be > by rail? 3. Paula, Where did you and your parents live? Your last name sounds very familiar to me - I was young when we left the area in 1961. I know my parents frequented some of the clubs around there (they used to take me in when I was small) and I'm quite certain I recognized one of the places when we were back there a few years ago. But I couldn't tell you what place it was or where it was, except it was on Rte. 51, south of the city. Both of my parents are gone, so I can't ask. Thanks! 3. I've recently found that I am connected to two (new to me) families in Pittsburgh. They are Martin SATLER, who had a son named George, and George Jacob EYRICH, who had sons named George and Jacob. Both families immigrated from Germany in the 1840s, both settled in the old Bayardstown area (now the Strip District). Most of them are buried in Smithfield Cemetery, Homewood. 1. [PITTSBURGH] Beech Family
    2. Paula Murphy
    3. I am looking for any connections to John Beech. He is the 2nd husband of my g-g-aunt Sarah Agnes McKeown who was born on August 29, 1873 and she was alive at least until 1943. Her first husband was John P. Mellody who died in 1917. I recently came across a small picture that has the caption on the back "John, Elaine and Doris Beech in front of large haystack". Elaine is of a size that you can't tell if she is a short grown woman or a teenager. Doris looks to be about 5 or so. If anyone knows anything about this family, please let me know. Happy Holidays!
