    3. Anna, Thanks for the information. I don't recall much of the Ankara, never having been inside. A friend of my parents worked there. We would see it when travelling to Elizabeth to visit some friends of my mother or to Forward Twp where my dad's uncle lived. You're probably familiar with his name. He owned Schumann's which was just down the road from the Ankara. Back in those days, the only lights along 51, after Bill Greens, was from the slag being dumped. There sure wasn't much along that stretch of road until you got to Large. It's hard to believe how much that section of 51 has developed. I haven't been out there far enough to see that mess where the state is tying in with the Mon Valley Expressway (I think that's what they are calling that new road.). 3. Marilyn, The Twin Coaches was waaaaay out, past Elizabeth and then some. I think that their address was Belle Vernon but that's been a long time. As to the Elks, Lions, etc., I do have a few years on you but I don't think that helps in this case. It's possible that your parents did take you to one of their lodges and it's possible that it was some kind of family function, maybe for a Christmas party. 3. Ginnie, The only thing I know about Bill Green's is that he supposedly owned a shopping center to the right of Saw Mill Run and Old Clairton Rd. If he had a night club, it was before my time. 1. [PITTSBURGH] WOOD - Charles Wesley
    2. Does anyone know of a Charles Wesley Wood? He married a Birdie Fielding and had five children (all born in Pittsburgh): John Delano m. Evelyn? Mabel Marian Robert (had two sons, Daniel and Thomas) Charles William b. 1 April 1918 in Pittsburgh, PA - 7 September 1989 in Valrico, FL Charles William was the youngest of the five and my grandfather. . He married Elizabeth Jane Pfeiffer (b. 1922) on 27 Nov 1943 in Pittsburgh and had four children: Laura Elizabeth b. 1946 - d. 1967 Karen Suzanne b. 1950 James Frederick b. 1953 Douglas Charles b. 1956 (this is my father) This is all the information that my father and I have been able to come up with at the moment. My grandfather had a sort of falling out with his family, which explains why there is such a lack of information. If anyone can give us any leads whatsoever, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Sue* ----- Original Message ----- Ray, everyone! I suppose they could have. River travel was probably more extensive than what is done nowadays though, it's still traveled today by barges still! I have had some relatives die in the Oh river because of the locks, back in the 1930's. Could they have traveled by stagecoaches? Package ships? I know that there were Package ships that traveled from Pittsburgh to New Orleans, or my relatives related to me! One of mine (Merriman?) was supposed to be a pilot that worked that voyage! He lived in Beaver county, PA at the time in the mid-1800's. I mean that that's probably not that unusual at that time. Keep it coming everyone! C. TIA Carol S. Does one exist for those years? I know of the Closson Index to Wills 1789-1869, and Helen Harriss's Will Abstracts 1789-1844, but of nothing later. The Closson Index just gives you a volume and page number and year for each person's name. The Will Abstracts book actually abstracts each Will and gives you the executor, who bequests were made to, and any other pertinent genealogy facts contained in the Will. The index not only indexes the deceased but anyone mentioned in every Will. Of course if a person did not have the forsight to write a Will then it will not be in the Will books or indexes. But they could still have a probate packet in the Register of Wills office. These are well worth looking into also as they would contain an inventory of goods and if they were sold, who to (typically other relatives and neighbors). They list the goods down to each chamber pot and family bible. You can also see what trade your ancestor may have engaged in by way of what tools he owned. To access these records, as with any courthouse, you could write to the Register of Wills to see what their research policy is. The Allegheny County Register of Wills has a very nice website also. Or you could go down to the office yourself, or hire a local researcher to do it for you. Hope that helps. -- Elissa ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! Juno offers FREE or PREMIUM Internet access for less! Join Juno today! 3. Al, Thanks for the info, but only the Twin Coaches sounds even vaguely familiar. But if it burned in the 60's or 70's, it couldn't have been the one I recognized. I wonder if the "nightclub" I thought I recognized a few years ago could have been a Masons Hall, or the Elks, something like that - we didn't stop (I wish we had) so I don't know what it is today and don't even know if I could find it again (!) - I recall a neon sign and the facade looking familiar - it was one of those "deja vu" type things where you know you've seen it, been in it, what it looked like inside, but when and where you can't recall. The Twin Coaches - you say farther out - you mean farther south of the city, don't you? Because we lived southeast of Pittsburgh. My father was a Mason, my mother an Eastern Star and I think my father belonged to some of the fraternal type clubs - Elks, Lions, etc. So I could have been remembering something like that, but why would they take a child into those places? Was that common practice in the early 50's around that area? I was really young, proabbly not older than 3 or 4. The one closest was the Ankara which is now part of Southland Shopping Mall, if my memory serves me correctly. It disappeared in the 50s. Much further out was the Twin Coaches which was destroyed by fire in the 60s or 70s. The Twin Coaches featured a lot of headliners and was second to the Holiday House in popularity. Greed of performers killed the Holiday House. Al At 10:49 PM 12/28/2001, you wrote: >Paula, > >Where did you and your parents live?
