Hello all, I have found another missing link in my search for the part of my missing LOCK(E) family that migrated from Baltimore to the Pittsburgh area around 1800. To briefly recap; I obtained an obituary (from the Balto Sun) for my GGG-Grandfather, Nathaniel LOCK, who died in Baltimore in 1833. At the end of the Obituary was a request for papers in Pittsburgh and Indiana to copy the notice. At first I thought that this meant The State of Indiana (which I found hard to believe). After a little research I discovered that northeast of Pittsburgh lies Indiana County, Pa. "This must be it!" I thought and started looking into LOCK(E) families in both areas. I soon came across another Obituary (also in the Balto Sun) for one of Nathaniel's Sons, Nathaniel O. LOCKE, who died in Allegheny City in 1836 "Leaving a large family and many dear friends behind". I was content to sit on that bit of information for a while and proceeded to turn my interests to Indiana County. No Luck there. I contacted the Indiana Historical Society and someone there was kind enough to look for any references to any LOCK(E) families in their library. There we! re a few hits, but all from later on in the 1800's. "Not close enough", I thought. Then, back in early September, while searching a website featuring historical Pittsburgh ( http://digital.library.pitt.edu ) I happened upon a book entitled (get ready for this one...) History of Allegheny County: including it early settlement and progress to present time; a description of its historic and interesting localities; its cities, towns and villages; religious, educational, social and military history; mining, manufacturing and commercial interests, improvements, resources, statistics, ect. ; also biographies of many of it's representative citizens. Published: Chicago: A Warner & Co., 1889 WHEW! I'm sure glad they inserted that "etc." in there when they did! Anyway, in this volume contained a biography for one Samuel LOCK RIDDLE which I will copy as follows: SAMUEL LOCK RIDDLE, farmer, Post office Hulton, was born in 1814, in Pittsburgh, a son of Charles R. and Elizabeth (LOCK) RIDDLE. His parents were natives of Baltimore, Md., and came to Pittsburgh in wagons about 1810. Charles Riddle was a chair maker and painter on Smithfield Street, Pittsburgh, but sold out and bought property in Indiana Township, opposite Hulton station. When Samuel L was quiet small his father died, and the family was left with but little of this world's goods. Our subject early learned to toil, has built up a fine property and enjoys a good home. His mother died in 1870, in her eighty-fifth year. In 1835 he started for himself on a farm in lower St. Clair township, and in 1843 came to Plum township. After eleven years he moved to Fairview, Butler county, and remained twenty-one years, in which time he bought three good farms. He then sold two of them, and, coming again to Plum township, purchased ten acres just outside of the borough of Verona, ! east of Hulton station, where he has a fine home in which to spend his latter days. He married, in 1835, Mary Ann SCHRODER, born May 3, 1816, in Maryland, daughter of Henry and Katherine (FAIK) SCHRODER, natives, respectively, of Holland and Little York, Pa. Her Mother died in 1852; Her father came to this country before the Revolution; was a tailor, and died in this country in 1832. Three boys and one girl have been born to Mr. and Mrs. RIDDLE: Wiliam Henry HARRISON, an attorney in Butler county, Pa.; Samuel L., in Lawrence county; Ovington, in Lawrence county; and Margaret (now married). Mr. Riddle is a Republican, and he and his wife are members of the U.P. Church. I suppose this answers the "riddle" of the notice to copy to Indiana. I suppose they meant the Indiana township section of the Pittsburgh paper (if indeed the paper had separate sections for each township's news). My Nathaniel Lock had a daughter named Elizabeth in the correct time frame, so I am "almost" sure we are talking about the same family. Finding a marriage notice in the Balto Sun would take care of that bit of proof. ***QUESTION*** Is anyone researching either the LOCK(E) or RIDDLE family from this time? I would dearly love to hear from any LOCK(E) researchers in this area/time frame. I am sorry for the long post, but there just seemed too much information to convey. I am also sorry to say that at this time I will be dropping out of the Indiana County Rootsweb list. Thank you all so much for your efforts in trying to help me, but it looks like I need to concentrate elsewhere for now. Thanks! -Geo George F. Hi Everyone While we are on the subject of senior citizens, please, look both ways before you cross the street. I look out for you but there are others who don't. I have had you walk in front of my car when I had the green light and you had the red. I see you cross the street without even looking either way. Please, if you have senior citizens in your family please warn them about crossing the street. I consider this a very serious matter. Barb

Mac a/k/a Simon, For the 6089th time, I did not; do not open attachments.. I didn't open--I deleted immediately but Norton shut down the works. Incidentally, this crazy thing--or things--came from the phone booth. No ,not from you. Strangely, it wasn't addressed to me. It was addressed to Al. I DID NOT OPEN the attachment. Why didn't the rest of you hoodlums get the same thing. Also, the five e-mails of which each had five copies, were not addressed to me but the subject line in each was 'phone booth'. Methinks we have a rival gang. Thanks for answering. I feel like I'm stranded out in the boonies all by myself. Next thing you know a voice will be coming out of that hollow tombstone in Carnot Cemetery. Hi Roseanne Why did you and your husband do the wallpapering? I just had to ask. Barb
Thanks, Elissa. I'll be checking the site. Yes, he would have been naturalized in PA. I just hoping the application will be as fruitful as yours. Nora Go to the site http://county.allegheny.pa.us/reg.wills and follow instructions. Barb
Hi Nora He would apply to the county in which they lived. When I sent for info on my parents naturalization I sent to the county, Allegheny. When I received the reply it came from the National Archieves and Records Administratioon 700 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW Washington, DC 20408-0001 You might just want to send there but I will give you a website to get on and go from there Barb
Hi Elissa Welcomed your reply about the WPGS. The way it is stated in the Pennysaver makes it look like the meeting is at Carnegie Library and I looked at it again trying to look at it differently but it still looked like the WPGS meeting was at Carnegie 10;00a.m. to 12;00. What would that meeting consist of? Thanks for your reply. Barb
Does anyone know where Logstown/Lagstown might be located? Just received great-grandmother's (Olive Margaret Erwin HICKEY) obit. Said she was born in Logstown/Lagstown, PA in 1870. Her parents were William and Nancy ERWIN. I have not heard of this town. She died in Wireton, PA. Thanks for any help, Bonnie
I've been was grounded most of the day., Norton Scan did it's usual scan at noon and shut me down for two viruses. I went through everything I was told to do and finally I'm able to communicate again. Is the problem fixed? Obviously not for both viruses are still listed. Odd thing happened when I received mail again. All of the messages concerning phone booths, boonies, schools came through with 5 copies of each messages. I'm taking a chance--Norton says I'm clear. Go figure. Oh what the heck, I'll list the Virus names. Good idea on the wallpaper but I had thought of a large flower print. Nothing will match the recliner of Mac's. Honestly, I think he stole it from Archie Bunker.
I've been away from that area so long - was Eastland Shopping Plaza anywhere near Miracle Mile? I remember a store somewhere in that area called Zayres or similar? Or further in towards Pittsburgh? Twas the night before Christmas in a Burgh that I know The stadium was empty and the lights did not glow The uniforms hung in the lockers with pride with the helmets, with emblems on only one side The players and coaches had been gone for a while I sent them home early with a holiday smile So I cleared off my desk and was ready to leave to spend time at home on this Christmas eve When out by the lockers I heard a loud clatter I ran from the office to see what was the matter I ran down the hall just as fast as can be and stopped at the door I was trying to see I heard someone walking some concern this did cause Then I gasped when I saw it was Santa Clause He was dressed not in red but in gold trimmed with black and I watched as he pulled all the gifts from his sack Some fumbles, some pics, and some sacks for the "D" And a ball for Kris Brown that flies straight as can be The receivers got touchdowns A long bomb for Slash and a defensive back for the Bus to smash Every player and coach got a gift of some kind but what would he leave me? Lots of thoughts crossed my mind I watched as he carried his bag down the hall but he started to leave he left me nothing at all So with fire in my eyes and spit on my lip I yelled 'cross the room "Hey man what's your trip" "I watched as you gave all those gifts to my crew but you're giving me nothing what wrong did I do?" He turned and he smiled and he said just one thing "When you get to New Orleans you'll get your Super Bowl ring" Sue McAlister HOME PAGE: www.Painter-McAlister.com Administrator for: PA-PITTSBURGH and PA-WESTMORELAND-HISTORIC Administrator for: BALLES, ECKER, KELLAWAY, KELLOWAY, MCCALLISTER, MCALLISTER, SKELLY, PAINTER, PAYNTER Administrator for: Adoption, Mystery, Horror, Stay-At-Home-Moms, M-W- C, Nost-TV, Palm-Gen and Westie --- Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com).
