Ancestry.com isn't selling ANY data - what they're offering for a fee is access to a new search engine on their site. OneWorldTree has the ability to string together info from multiple Ancestry databases, including the family trees submitted by users, and display the results on one page called a "Person Page." Read the description here: http://www.ancestry.com/search/rectype/trees/owt/ You can also read an "official" statement from MyFamily.com (parent company of Ancestry.com) here: http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/listowners/2004-05/1083868229 Regards, Marie

    3. Alice I know that there are PHILLIPS and MARROW researchers on the Washington County List. I have some references for PHILLIPS going back to about 1848; these are members of the Baptists. None of the names you mention are listed. If, you have other names and think they may have been members of the Baptist religion send them to me and I'll check my reference. There are a few MARROW, but, they are present day names. No DOWLING names in my reference. 2. In the 1860 census my Great Grandmother Anna Eliza DOWLING was either living or visiting Alex MORROW (his wife Ellenor) family in North Fayette, Allegheny co. Pa. 1870 the Morrows were still living there minus Anna Eliza. The Morrows are connected in another way, Anna Eliza DOWLING married Elijah PHILLIPS sometime in the late 1870's. His uncle James PHILLIPS married Mary Jane MORROW (b. in Pa) James died in 1849, William MORROW became the guardian of James and Mary Janes daughter Rebecca. All of these families have lived either in Allegheny Co., Washington Co., some were born in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Virginia and West Virginia. 3. Julie, Does your head hurt? If so, go to google's ADVANCED SEARCH. It'll save you from having to worry about whether it should be a plus or minus that you're looking for. It's also more simpler for most to learn. 1. SEARCHING FOR Nee AND COMMON SURNAMES IN SEARCH ENGINES
    2. Hello Carol, Use the Google search engine and enter the following ; surname+nee also try this +surname+nee-(nee) leave no spaces between the plus and minus signs and the words. What you are doing is saying I want you to find all the all the info on the surname Nee. In the second example you are saying find all the surname nee but exclude (nee) as a maiden name. In the 2nd example you get the 1st 9 with the Nee surname then go to the 2nd set ( 11 - 20) there is a ' Genealogy Register Nee Genealogy site'. I didn't look any further , but play with it. I find looking beyond the first 20 or 30 hits I usually find something I am looking for. Also play with how you search in a search engine for example try looking for a time period in a state example ; New York City 1890-1940 ; or ; +churches+new york 1920 ' try different ways to search. In genealogy searches try Hunter+genealogy you can also add + and the state you need i.e. Hunter+genealogy+new york now you will mostly get Hunters in NY state. One more neat thing you should do with Google is open your searches on the word (cached) below the main line. When you do this they high light your search words and you can easily find what you need. All the best and have fun. 3. Here is the official answer from Rootsweb, part of MyFamily. Ancestry is part of MyFamily also. MyFamily is not selling the trees, they are selling a new service to search the trees easily. "Family Trees submitted through Ancestry World Tree and RootsWeb World Connect are free and will remain free." Message quoted in its entirety as received on the Listowners List (for administrators). I'm just the messenger~ Marilyn MyFamily.com has written the text below as we believe it will help answer any questions your message board posters or mailing list subscribers may have regarding our OneWorldTreeSM (OWT) service. As always, feel free to contact or have others contact either Ancestry's Customer Solutions - http://ancestry.custhelp.com or RootsWeb's HelpDesk - http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com as needed. Sincerely, Vicki Thauvin RootsWeb Staff At the end of April, Ancestry.com released a preview of a new service called the OneWorldTreeSM service. This preview is just the first step toward a powerful new tool for your genealogical research. The preview status of the release has prompted questions and speculation. We hope the following information will help clear up some of the confusion regarding the OneWorldTree service. OneWorldTree does two things. ? First, it searches family history records. It does not modify or replace the original records. ? Second, it compiles the information in an effort to group the ones that go with a given person (a process we call ³stitching²), and provides references to the original sources. The first collection of records stitched into OneWorldTree was the Ancestry World Tree. Ancestry.com will continue to add records to the OneWorldTree system in an effort to provide more valuable data for our users, including trees, census records, and vital records. RootsWeb¹s World Connect Project is among the databases that will be searched and stitched as part of the OneWorldTree service. Family Trees submitted through Ancestry World Tree and RootsWeb World Connect are free and will remain free. Any options chosen by submitters with respect to GEDCOM download and source display will still work the same way. OneWorldTree doesn¹t contain those trees, it contains links that help people find them. We hope that the genealogy community will see the value of searching and stitching in the greater context of sharing family history information, and that they will add and update their trees. In order to be included in OneWorldTree, family trees must meet certain criteria. If you want to be sure that your tree will be included in the new OneWorldTree service, or if for any reason you do not want your tree to be part of OneWorldTree, please visit http://trees.ancestry.com/owt/checklist.aspx for more information. ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, 10 May, 2004 1:36 PM Subject: Re: [PITTSBURGH] Ancestry.com to sell Family Tree data | That is terrible!!!! 3. Heads up, everyone!! I received this in my box this morning and thought it worth passing along..... If you have submitted a family tree to Ancestry.com, you might want to know of the change about to be implemented by them. The Family Trees that have been donated to Ancestry for free distribution to other researchers are about to be sold by subscription: The OneWorldTree Preview cost will be $49.95 for 14 months. If you'd prefer that your information was not sold, there is a link below which will take you to a set of instructions on opting out by deleting your tree. After clicking on the link and arriving at the page, click on "What's a preview?" near the top of the page. Read thoroughly and then click on "View our checklist" (which appears on #3). Among other things, you will see the following sentence: "If for any reason you do not want your tree to be part of the new OneWorldTree service, you must delete it from the Ancestry World Tree database by tentatively May 21, 2004."
