This is not geneology, but maybe heritage. I am working on a project for which I need the words for dog and cat (with the article - the) in as many languages as possible. I have German, French, Spanish, Italian, Greek, Portuguese, Dutch, and Russian. I am hoping that in the diverse Pittsburgh culture there are people who could supply me with Polish, Czech, Slovak, Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, Finnish, Romanian, and any other language. A simplified pronounciation would also be appreciated. Thanks in advance. Rosanne
I was wondering if any of the old German Churches on the Southside may have copies of sermons preached over the years? A colleague is working on a history of the 74th PA and I know that in late August/first Sunday in September there were a series of "recruitment" sermons preached in the area. We are trying to find out if any of those may still exist. Specifically thinking about the United German Evangelical Protestant Church of Birmingham (now the Birmingham United Church of Christ). Years ago, Rosine Bucher helped me with some information from that church and I was going through my notes 15 years later and came across her mentioning that that church kept amazing records. (She herself was an amazing resource to me at the time!) So, any suggestions? Rod Fleck Sent from Forks, Washington
Patrick - I have been storing things at GenCircles and have made some progess with my Scottish family lines. I love the service. Convert my FTM files over to GEDCOM run that through GEDMARK and then up load that final GEDCOM to Gencircles...I have also found a few folks working on my wife's lines that really have helped me untangle a few knots in our files. If you haven't already tried it, I suggest you check it out. It is a free site, you can do a search for individuals. But the best part is it offers what it calls "smartmatching." You can submit a GEDCOM, with you making the decisions as to what will be shown. For example, you can set it to show no notes or sources if you wish. It then matches it against every other GEDCOM anyone submitted and gives you a menu listing to select from. The menu lists every one of your names that has a match in someone else's submission, and will show you the two side by side. I have found and contacted over twenty other new researchers so far that link to the same individuals I am researching. Bottom line, it is worth your looking at. Jen, I just sent you an e-mail with no subject line - sorry... The problem is that the Carnegie Elementary I'm looking for is in Braddock, PA and there is a section of Pittsburgh called Carnegie which is on the opposite side of town from Braddock, PA. Sorry, I even confused myself! I will check Classmates. Thanks. Carol
Hi, Does anyone remember a Carnegie Elementary School in Braddock, PA? Seeking information on Frances Murray who was principal there for 23 years. She passed away in 1973. Carol
Hi Carol, This is funny...we're e-mailing each other about different search things at the same time. Talk about cosmic connections. I am looking at that Lillian Smith you referenced. Thanks SOOOO much. That HAS to be the right one (the one who died in 1964...so young). I am checking now to see if I can find an obit. How tragic. Hi Carol, I checked classmates and there is still a Carnegie Elementary but teachers or principals are listed as members. Do you think it's the right school? If it is, you could call them. Jen in WA
Pittsburgh's Chamber of Commerce has approved of the proposition to have the name of that city spelled with an "h" so as to effectually distinguish it from other cities of the same name. There is another reason why this "h" should be in the name, vis.: the letter is in all Scotch cities that have their names end with "borough", and if we want to make quite sure in the distant future that the founders of Pittsburgh were not Dutch we must keep "h" in the name.
From another List WHITE HOUSE PROCLAMATION MEMORIAL DAY For Immediate Release Office of the Press Secretary May 27, 2004 Prayer for Peace, Memorial Day, 2004 By the President of the United States of America A Proclamation For more than two centuries, Americans have been called to defend the founding ideals of our democracy. On Memorial Day, a grateful Nation remembers the proud patriots who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of liberty's blessings. >From the opening battles of the American Revolution through the turmoil of the Civil War, to World War I, World War II, Korea, and Vietnam, to the Persian Gulf and today's operations in the war on terror in Afghanistan, Iraq, and around the world, the members of our military have built a tradition of honorable and faithful service. As we observe Memorial Day, we remember the more than one million Americans who have died to preserve our freedom, the more than 140,000 citizens who were prisoners of war, and all those who were declared missing in action. We also honor our veterans for their dedication to America and their sacrifice. This year, we honor many heroes by observing the 60th anniversary of D-Day on the beaches of Normandy, and by dedicating the National World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C. In a radio address on June 6, 1944, President Franklin Roosevelt described these service members as the "pride of our Nation," who struggled to preserve our civilization. The fallen from that fateful day and that war will always be remembered. They hold a cherished place in the history of the United States and in the memories of the people they liberated. Today, all who wear the uniform of the United States are serving at a crucial hour in history, and each has answered a great call to serve our Nation on the front lines of freedom. As we continue to fight terrorism and promote peace and freedom-, let us pray for the safety and strength of our troops, for God's blessing on them and their families, and for those who have lost loved ones. On this Memorial Day, we honor all of our fallen soldiers, their commitment to our country, and their legacy of patriotism and sacrifice. By giving their lives in the cause of freedom, these heroes have protected and inspired all Americans. In respect for their devotion to America, the Congress, by a joint resolution approved on May 11, 1950, as amended (64 Stat. 158), has requested the President to issue a proclamation calling on the people of the United States to observe each Memorial Day as a day of prayer for permanent peace and designating a period on that day when the people of the United States might unite in prayer. The Congress, by Public Law 106-579, has also designated the minute beginning at 3:00 p.m. local time on that day as a time for all Americans to observe the National Moment of Remembrance. NOW, THEREFORE, I, GEORGE W. BUSH, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim Memorial Day, May 31, 2004, as a day of prayer for permanent peace, and I designate the hour beginning in each locality at 11:00 a.m. of that day as a time to unite in prayer. I also ask all Americans to observe the National Moment of Remembrance beginning at 3:00 p.m. local time on Memorial Day. I urge the press, radio, television, and all other media to participate in these observances. I also request the Governors of the United States and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, and the appropriate officials of all units of government, to direct that the flag be flown at half-staff until noon on this Memorial Day on all buildings, grounds, and naval vessels throughout the United States, and in all areas under its jurisdiction and control. I also request the people of the United States to display the flag at half-staff from their homes for the customary forenoon period. IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this twenty-sixth day of May, in the year of our Lord two thousand four, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and twenty-eighth. It was originally built on the corner of 6th & Smithfield but the "newest" building is 1/2 block toward 7th Ave, just opposite the Gimbel's garage. You can find out about the earliest burials by visiting the Historic Pitt site. Later on, the church bought and established a cemetery on the corner of Forbes and S. Dallas which goes by the moniker of Smithfield East End Cemetery. It is now owned and operated by Homewood Cemetery but Homewood DOES have a caretaker and record keeper on-site.
