    2. oops, this went off too fast. Tell them the approximate years you are refering to. I remember a gal who had an illigitimate child who belonged to the church. My guess is she would be 78 or 79 today. I think her name was Margaret Reinbold. Odd that should come into my mind after all of these years. Wish I could help you, and I wish you luck in your search. There was another church on the next corner....same side of the street that was known as the bake oven cause it was round. It is episcopal. If you don't do well at Calvary, ask them the name of the episcopal church. That might also be the one. Ginnie

    2. Hi Jen, I left Pittsburgh over 50 years ago, but have a condo in WV and so get to Pgh once in a while. I don't recognize the names, but if I were you, I would write to the church and ask for someone to research your information. Offer to pay them, which I don't think they would accept, or tell them you would send a donation to the church. They have a large collection of Tiffany windows, and probably a prettier church than any I can remember in Pittsburgh.....or elsewhere.

    3. Hi Ginnie, Carol S. is an angel trying to help me find family from 934 Beech Ave., in Pittsburgh. Do you mind if I ask how long ago it was you were in the neighborhood? I live in Washington State now but was born at 934 Beech (at Allegheny General Hosp) and am trying to locate my birth mother or anyone from the old neighborhood who might have known her. The people I seek are named: Mrs. Vivian Thompson or Lillian Ross or Mrs. Margaret Lee or Michael Berry Jr. The home was a rental and was owned by Mrs. Grace White. She is deceased, as are her sons, Gilbert and Gorman. I spoke with one of their surviving spouses but they married before the above people occupied the home. Any and all help will be so appreciated. Perhaps my birth mother was a member of the church too. Take care. It's still in the same place that it was c1950. Beech Bottom? That's a small village in Belmont Co., Ohio. There is no such street in Pgh. I would love to know where you saw that street on a map. 934 Beech Ave. is located in the old borough of Manchester that is now known as the tony neighborhood of Allegheny West. Giving you something that you may be familiar with, it's between the north end of the West End Bridge and West Park. 3. Hello again Cathy ... I am transplanted ... a Yankee living in the South. My wife and I moved here from Alaska about 2 years ago. We lived in a log home I built along the Tanana river. I'm retired twice (Soldier and Civil Service). My wife retired from Civil Service early as well since they closed the Army Fort where we worked. We spent one winter looking at each other across the kitchen table at -60F and decided it was time to move. She chose Alabama ... I wanted Kuaii Hawaii ... she won. I've seen various figures from the early years concerning immigrant illiteracy and I think it's fair to say that somewhere around 90% could neither read or write in their native language - couple that with spelling in the new world language (English) and it becomes a mess. Immigrants were concerned only with "getting here" - correct spelling of their surname was of little or no importance, and if they were asked to confirm their surname in writing, they'd undoubtedly look at the "entry" and nod their head in the affirmative. Mr. Szkiladz from Poland would swear up and down that the "Smith" entry just recorded by Mr. McDonald in the governments "arrival register" in New York was indeed his surname. Anyone who has read Thomas Bell's "Out of This Furnace" will see a lot of similarities but I think the housing in Painter's Row is worse than that described in Bell's book. It also shows why unions and laws were needed to rein in the Carnegies of the world and protect the average folk from exploitation. Those who haven't read Bell's book might be in for a surprise. I can guarantee that, after reading these 6 or 7 pages, you'll thank your Creator that you weren't living through those times. The URL below is for the start of the article on Painter's Row.
