    1. [PA-PITTSBURGH] Pittsburgh Transportation Sept.22, 1906 McDonald PA Outlook
    2. Victoria Hospodar Valentine
    3. Pittsburg, Sept. 20--The same men who are backing the Carnegie, Oakdale and McDonald Street Railway company which intends to enter Pittsburg in the near future crossing the Monongahela river, are back of a gigantic scheme to give the people of Pittsburg a new system of street railways, with elevated line and tunnel connections, in opposition to the Pittsburg Railways company Gross MCCONNELL, of Carnegie, stated last nigh it could be depended upon that within a comparatively short time others besides the Pittsburg Railways company would be hauling passengers, and possibly freight from down in Ohio through Allegheny county, up the Monongahela river and into Fayette county. The whole scheme has been systematically worked out and with the application by Attorney George M. KOSAK yesterday for charters for fifteen surface lines and nine elevated roads to connect them, the ideas of the promoters are being carried out.

    3. Dear Michael; What did you look under for the passenger list on Ellis Island ? I do not know what ship my ggp's came over on just the year.......Are there many ships listed by the year, or do you need to know the ship's name before you can check for the passenger ? Thanks, Jane -----Original Message----- From: Michel Platt Sent: Sunday, May 13, 2007 1:29 AM To: paallegh-memories@rootsweb.com Cc: pa-pittsburgh@rootsweb.com Subject: [PA-PITTSBURGH] Orchard Street in 1907 Hello folks. I just joined these forums. This month celebrates the 100th anniversary of my grandmother and great-grandmother from Lithuania. I have found the record of their arrival on the SS Samland at Ellis Island on May 15th. On the manifest I have found that they were going to 210 Orchard Street in Pittsburgh. My great aunt and uncle were living there with more family at 40 Orchard Street, still Pittsburgh. My question is, which Orchard Street are we looking at? GoogleEarth has 4 in Pittsburgh, but what did Pittsburgh look like 100 years ago? I am thinking the Woodland Hills area is my last choice as it is sort of east of the city. If I look at the 1910 census, the family was in the Stafford - Stadium - Adena area of Ward 20. ( Other family members (their cousins) were on Western Avenue in Ward 21. ) Most of the family worked in the Coal and Steel factories with my grandfather later working for the Railroad. The family was Lithuanian. This information might help identify the social level they lived at. Unfortunately no one is alive today who knows this information. 3. There is an Orchard Street in McKees Rocks ...in an area called Preston....which was primarily Eastern immigrants who worked for Pressed Steel Railroad Car company. Of course "Orchard" could be a pretty common name for a street....sorta like "River Road", etc. Barbara - Uprooting family trees and/or Capt. Bill

    2. Norm, Checking with snopes.com, the free mammogram is not a scam, but there are minuses. _Click here: Urban Legends Reference Pages: Inboxer Rebellion (The Mammogramming Click)_ (http://www.snopes.com/inboxer/charity/mammogram.asp) At _<NOBR>The Breast Cancer _ (http://www.thebreastcancersite.com/) , you can "donate" clicks towards the provision of mammograms for underprivileged women in the U.S. And it's no scam, even if it's not exactly as described in the , you ca exhortation to become part of this. Unlike the way things are explained in the Unlike one click does not magically provide a mammogram to a needy woman one takes 45,000 clicks, not just one. Averaging 58,000 clicks a day, The Breast Cancer Site provides funding for approximately takes 45,00 a day. Visitors are also not prohibited from clicking more than once; they just can't do so more than once a day. Bonnie GARRITY California Oh, yes, I have contributed to the "clicking" ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.

    2. Norm
    3. Listers, non-genealogy, just a reminder . . . Please tell ten friends to tell ten today! The Breast Cancer site is having trouble getting enough people to click on their site daily to meet their quota of donating at least one free mammogram a day to an underprivileged woman. It takes less than a minute to go to their site and click on "donating a mammogram" for free (pink window in the middle). This doesn't cost you a thing. Their corporate sponsors/advertisers use the number of daily visits to donate mammogram in exchange for advertising. Here's the web site! Pass it along to people you know. _ _ _ _http://www.thebreastcancersite.com/ *_ PLEASE pass this along. _* Happy Mothers Day to all -- Norm Meinert

    1. Re: [PA-PITTSBURGH] Town or burrough of Carrick, Pennsylvania
    2. Al, I know just what you mean, why I am interested in Carrick is: William Wellings registration card 1917. At the time he was living at 619 Walnut St, Heidelburg, Pa which was my Grandparents home. So I knew he was related for sure and he put that he was born in Carrick, Penn. Why was I so excited about this? Because of my Grandmother Lilly,Lily,Lillie, Wellings/Black. I had no siblings for her with the exception of a maybe (Flora). Lillie's parents Levi Wellings and Lucy Johnson/Wellings came to the U.S. 1879 for Levi (we are almost certain) and 1880 for Lucy and children, Lillie being one. The U.K. census was 1881 the U.S. census was 1880 and there was my problem. To make a long story short I found them in the 1900 census living in Collier township with a two sons Joseph b. 1882 and William b. Aug. 1887. Next door Flora Atkins (probably Lillies sister) and next door to them John Black, Lilly/wife (my Grandparents) Lucy daughter b. 1898. I have my Grandparents marriage certificate, they were married in Pittsburgh. The chance of me getting birth certificates for any of the children born here is minute, but I am going to try. Well, thats why I was looking for Carrick, Pa. I am wondering what year it became part of Pittsburgh. Its late and I am really tired from searching, my arm is killing me. So, if i sound rambling, I probably am. Thanks for the interest. Alice ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.

    1. Re: [PA-PITTSBURGH] Town or burrough of Carrick, Pennsylvania
    2. Alice, Just 2 days ago I found the maternal grandparents of a fellow that worked on the fire dept with my dad and later with me. He's 80 now and has been searching for years with no luck and I've had no luck trying to talk him into the computer age. With what he knew about his mother's parents, it took me about 1/2 hour to find them, only because I had to find the street that they lived on. The reason he couldn't find it was due to the fact that Schultz family was recorded as the Joyce family in the 1900 census.. How do I know I had the right family. Easy. What I call preponderance of evidence. 5 individuals of the right sex, right name in the right order and the right approximate age living on a street where children were born before and after the census. Overwhelming preponderance. Al At 12:46 AM 5/13/2007, you wrote: >Al, If I don't find what I am looking for by browsing I will. Usually when I >do use it, I find nothing. I guess it just depends.
