Article Text: Philadelphia, October 29. On the 24th arrived from London the Briganteen Peterborow, Thomas EMBLY, Commander, who left the Downs the 4th of September, he touched one day at the Island of St. Maries, where he was told that they had a great storm amongst those Islands, by which twenty four sayle of vessels were lost at Fyal, Terceras, and St. Michels, he was in the said storm himself, and sayes it was very violent, he brings about 70 passengers, about seven of which died at sea of the small pox, but are now clear of the distemper. On the 25th arrived the Sloop Eagle from Bristol in six weeks, Robert CLAY, Master, who brought 20 passengers. On the 27th arrived Capt. John BAYLEY, Commander of the Carleton Frigot of London, a ship of 400 tons, 26 guns, from London, Lisbon, and Madera, who was unfortunately lost in the Bay, by the unskillfulness of the pilot, who ran her on ground, where she split, she had 10000 bushels of salt on board, and about 26 pipes of wine, they saved some of the wine, but the ship and salt quite lost. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ PA-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news!
