One Man Badly Bitten by an Escaped Pet. Wilkesbarre, Pa., Jan. 7 - E. E. BURDICK, of Troy, N. Y., was badly wounded Saturday night by a bear which broke into the hotel where he was stopping and, after frightening the guests into flight, seized BURDICK. The bear was owned by the proprietor of the hotel, Daniel DONOVAN, and it managed to break the chain with which it was tied to a stump in the yard and dashed into the hotel. It entered the room where a number of guests were sitting and a wild scramble for the windows ensued. In the struggle to get out the bear caught BURDICK, and in the fight with it he had his right hand bitten through and his right arm frightfully torn. He managed to break away from the animal after a hard struggle, and rushed from the room, while the others closed the door and imprisoned the bear. BURDICK's injuries are severe, but he will recover.
