An Expert to Get the Vessel Off the Haitian Coral Reef. Philadelphia, Pa., April 18 - After sustaining a loss of over $500,000 through the stranding of the British steamship Corinthia on the coral reefs of Haiti, the marine underwriters, who have paid that amount to the Cunard Steamship Company, the owners of the vessel, have decided to try and recoup themselves by placing the big boat again in seaworthy condition. For this purpose a syndicate has been formed, and the work of floating the steamship has been entrusted to John T. BOYT, a salvage expert of this city, who has gone to Gonaives, Haiti, the nearest port to where the vessel lies fast on the reefs. The Corinthia, which was loaded with material for the British Army in South Africa, was bound from New Orleans to cape Town, and struck Point Gravois one dark night in May last. She has been declared a total loss, her decks having been level with the water for almost a year. From a survey made by Mr. BOYT, last February, a report was sent to London that the vessel might be saved if a wrecking expedition was sent out at once. The London Salvage Association, who paid the Cunard line the full value of the vessel, decided to see what could be done toward indemnifying themselves for the loss which they had sustained, and chartered the steamship Bear, of Glasgow. This, with the necessary equipment and divers, left Glasgow on April 11 for Aux Cay, Haiti, where Mr. BOYT will embark on the vessel for Point Gravois. The Merritt Wrecking Company, of New York, refused to accept the undertaking of floating the vessel, claiming that it was a hopeless wreck, but the present expedition proposes to float the Corinthia, bring her to the United States for temporary repairs, and then send her to the Clyde for permanent repairs. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ PA-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news!
