Article Text: Philadelphia, October 29. On the 24th arrived from London the Briganteen Peterborow, Thomas EMBLY, Commander, who left the Downs the 4th of September, he touched one day at the Island of St. Maries, where he was told that they had a great storm amongst those Islands, by which twenty four sayle of vessels were lost at Fyal, Terceras, and St. Michels, he was in the said storm himself, and sayes it was very violent, he brings about 70 passengers, about seven of which died at sea of the small pox, but are now clear of the distemper. On the 25th arrived the Sloop Eagle from Bristol in six weeks, Robert CLAY, Master, who brought 20 passengers. On the 27th arrived Capt. Article Text: On Fryday last one Abner HUNT of Westchester was tryed here at the Supreme Court for counterfeiting a six pound bill, current money of this province: The jury brought in their verdict, that he was not guilty of the felony in counterfeiting the said bill, but that he was guilty of a misdemeanour in uttering the said bill, knowing it to be counterfeit. The same day one William SMITH of Charles Town near Boston, and one Hannah TRAVIS of this place, commonly called Dancing Hannah, were tryed, the former for three leveral felonies, and the latter for being accessory to two of the said felonies. The jury found William SMITH guilty of all the said felonys, and Han. TRAVIS guilty of being accessary to one of the said felonys. The next day the said Abner HUNT was fined fifteen pounds, and to be imprisoned till he pays the same, with the charges of his prosecution. Boy of 18 and Girl of 13 eloped and Were Caught. Article Text: Selin's Grove, Pa., Feb. 16--The Snyder county courts will have a case of elopement and abduction to try. Isaac BOWERSOX of Centerville, 18 years of age, importuned 13-year-old Amy NEITZ, of the same place, to elope with him to Philadelphia and get married. Last night, after she returned from school, BOWERSOX met her and insisted that she must now accompany him. Amy, still wearing short dresses, was compelled by BOWERSOX to disrobe and put on a long dress, which he provided for the occasion. This done, they boarded a train this morning for Selin's Grove and Sunbury, en route for Philadelphia. John NEITZ, the father of Amy, discovered the scheme and telephoned to the local police officers to watch the train and arrest both, which was done. They both confessed. F. BLESSING. Swarthmore Professor Dies From Over Work for Rockefeller Foundation. Article Text: Refusing to leave his work for the Rockefeller Foundation in Colorado, against the advice of physicians, Dr. George Frederick BLESSING, Professor of Engineering at Swarthmore College, died yesterday. His health broke down while in the West and he was brought to his summer home in Bay Head, Mich., early last week, but he failed to recover. Dr. BLESSING was on leave of absence from Swarthmore, where he had been head of the engineering department since 1908. Widely known as an engineering expert and educator, he was plant facilities engineer for the United States Ordnance Department during the war. He was born in Carrollton, Ky., in 1875, and was a graduate of University of Kentucky. He received a degree of doctor of philosophy from Hanover College, Indiana, in 1906, and studied and taught in Cornell University for two years. Dr. BLESSING is survived by his wife, formerly Miss Martha R. WHITE, of Lexington, Ky., and two children, Elizabeth, seven years old, and Robert, five years old. He was a member of the Engineer's Club, of this city, and of the Sigma Xi honorary engineering fraternity. Article Text: Philadelphia, Pa., Jan. 24.--George SCHAFFER, a butcher, aged forty-two years, and his three children, aged, respectively, fourteen, eleven and three years, were poisoned today by drinking coffee which contained arsenic. All are in the hospital in a critical condition. The police believe that SCHAFFER attempted to kill his children and himself. Mrs. Marie CLAPP, his wife, who was taken into custody because her husband said she shot him, was released on $2,500 bail. Mrs. CLAPP spent the night at her father's home in West Philadelphia and returned today to her apartments where the shooting occurred. KING, a prominent business man of this city, died at the Polyclinic Hospital in Philadelphia, this morning of complications following a long illness. Mr. KING had been in failing health for some time and had been in the hospital in Philadelphia for several weeks where he had been taking special treatment. The members of his family were with him when he died. Mr. KING was born in Lancaster County and came to this city many years ago when a very young man. He engaged in the bakery business and continued in that line up to the time of his illness. He was senior partner of W. A. Mr. KING is survived by his wife, one son, Daniel J. and one daughter, Mrs. Alonzo PARTRIDGE, of Kingston, and two grandchildren: also his mother, Mrs. Daniel KING, of Columbia, Lancaster County; one sister, Mrs. Sadie PAULES, of Columbia, and one brother, Charles KING, of this city. Dr. KANE, Aged 60, Performs Intricate Operation Upon Himself. Article Text: Kane, Pa., Feb. 16.--According to attaches of the Kane Summit Hospital, Dr. Evan O'Neil KANE, sixty, performed an operation upon himself for chronic appendicitis this morning. He walked to the operating room where as chief surgeon for over thirty years he had operated on nearly 4,000 cases, prepared himself for the operation and in the presence of _____ other physicians and nurses, applied local anesthetic and calmly performed the operation. He is reported as being comfortable today. Those who witnessed the operation were Dr. Thomas L. KANE, brother of the patient, Dr. Mary HAYES and Dr. ______________________. He was propped up on the operating table with pillows behind his back and beneath his body, in such a manner as to afford him the best view of his work, and a nurse with her hand behind him held him head well forward until his chin rested on his breast to give him full view. The operation was an extremely intricate one and was what in surgery is termed an interval operation. Dr. KANE carefully dissected all tissues as he went along, closing up the blood veins in the appendix when located. He then pulled it up, cut it off and bent the stub under to prevent infection.
