One Man Badly Bitten by an Escaped Pet. Wilkesbarre, Pa., Jan. 7 - E. E. BURDICK, of Troy, N. Y., was badly wounded Saturday night by a bear which broke into the hotel where he was stopping and, after frightening the guests into flight, seized BURDICK. The bear was owned by the proprietor of the hotel, Daniel DONOVAN, and it managed to break the chain with which it was tied to a stump in the yard and dashed into the hotel. It entered the room where a number of guests were sitting and a wild scramble for the windows ensued. In the struggle to get out the bear caught BURDICK, and in the fight with it he had his right hand bitten through and his right arm frightfully torn. He managed to break away from the animal after a hard struggle, and rushed from the room, while the others closed the door and imprisoned the bear. BURDICK's injuries are severe, but he will recover. The bear was captured by ropes thrown over its head. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ PA-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news! Constable Fatally Wounds a Murderer in Pennsylvania. Greensburg, Pa., Jan. 7 - The killing of Tony SUCCOSH, an Italian boarding house keeper at Smithton, this county, and the shooting of the murderer, Martion ROCCO, by Constable John LYNN, created a sensation in that mining town Saturday night. In a desperate fight, ROCCO sent a bullet through SUCCOSH's heart. He died instantly. The murderer fled pursued by a posse of desperate men headed by Constable LYNN. Finally the Italian murderer was cornered by the constable in a ravine a mile from the village. It was then that a desperate battle with revolvers began. The two men, each stationed behind a tree, fired when a glimpse of the other could be had. Finally in an unguarded moment the Italian exposed his head and breast and the constable, quick as a flash, sent a bullet through his left lung. With a cry of pain ROCCO dropped to the ground. Constable LYNN hurried to the village, secured a conveyance, and hauled the wounded man, nearly dead from loss of blood, to the office of Justice Joseph SMITH. He was then brought to jail here. ROCCO is not expected to recover. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ PA-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news! John Sleeper Clarke's Daughter Objects to Certain Arrangements. Philadelphia, Jan. 7 - It is likely that there will be some dispute in a matter arising in the affairs of the estate of John Sleeper CLARKE, the famous comedian, who died in England in September, 1899, and whose estate owns the Walnut Street Theatre. In his will Mr. CLARKE, after making numerous private and public bequests, left the residue for equal division between his four children, Asia, Adrienne, Creston, and Wilfred. There is a plan to reduce the $100,000 mortgage held by the Penn Mutual Life Insurance Company on the Walnut Street Theatre to $70,000 by applying $10,000 per annum for three years of the income derived from the building. In a petition presented Saturday in the Orphans' Court, by Henry E. GARSED, the administrator of the estate, it was stated that all parties concerned have agreed to the arrangement except the daughter, Mrs. Asia MORGAN, who resides in London. Mrs. MORGAN, it was related, while having notice of the proceedings, refuses to assent to or oppose the same or take any part therein. Judge HANNA made an order on Mrs. MORGAN to appear on the 6th of next month and show cause why the rents of the property mentioned should not be impounded and applied to the payments of taxes, water, rent, and interest. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ PA-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news!
