Article Text: Philadelphia, Octob. 21. We hear from Bucks, that the woman lately condemn'd to be hang'd at Philadelphia for burglary, but repriev'd and discharg'd, is now in prison at Newtown for a crime of the same kind. And from the same County, that Elijah DONE, a farmer there having some people at his house to assist in husking Indian corn, took a horse and rid towards Bristol for some rum to entertain them with, and having sent it homewards, he cross'd from Bristol to Burlington with his horse tho' he had no business that way,and rid up Burlington street full speed. A cow happened to be in the way which he rid over, and fell, broke one arm, languish'd two days, and then died. It seems he had sometimes before been disorder'd in his senses, and at such times used to ride violently thro' the woods. The same morning Frances HAMMILTON received her punishment for (being found out at) picking pockets on the 16th instant. She was exalted above the heads of the people, to the top of the Courthouse steps, and her hands bound to the rails, with her face towards the whipping-post and pillory, and after she had remain'd in that situation for two hours, she was taken down and publickly whipt. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ PA-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news! Extensive Purchases in Pennsylvania's Bituminous Field. Altoona, Pa., Jan. 7 - Among the substantial things which the new century brought to the central bituminous coal fields was a boom in the purchase of coal lands almost unprecedented in the history of the soft coal trade. Four big deals were consummated last week by which 10,000 acres of coal lands changed hands at a purchase price at a little over $1,000,000. Most important of these deals was a sale outright of 22,000 acres of coal lands in Yonga, Black Lick, and Conemaugh towns, Indiana County, at $40 per acre flat. The purchaser is a Philadelphia syndicate, in which it is hinted Senator COCHRANE, P. A. B. WIDENER, and Stephen B. ELKING are the moving figures. The territory will be taken up immediately and developed, railroads into the field having already been contracted for. The Buffalo, Rochester, and Pittsburg Railway on Saturday paid out $100,000 for 4,000 acres of coal land in the same county, comprised in the Dickey leases. The big Two Lick holdings of 5,000 acres were sold last week to Dr. William FREAR, trustee for a New York syndicate, for $120,000. The last block sold was 3,000 acres at Graceton, which passed into the McCreary Coke Company for $100,000. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ PA-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news! Article Text: Philadelphia, April 29. >From Bermuda, they write that a sea monster has been lately seen there, the upper part of the whose body was in the shape and bigness of a boy of 12 years old, with long black hair, the lower part resembled a fish. He was first seen on shore, and taking to the water was pursued by people in a boat, who intended to strike him with a fishgig, but approaching him, the human likeness surprised them into compassion, and they had not the power to do it. Yesterday two men were executed here, who received sentence of death at the sessions of the Court of Oyer and Terminer, for burglary, viz. John WHATNELL, who was born in the County of Cheshire in England, aged 27 years, and Michael M'DEIRMAT, an Irishman, about 27. During the time of their imprisonment after their condemnation, they appeared penitent, bewailing their sins, and desirous of instruction. At the place of execution, they seem'd very earnest in their supplication to Heaven for mercy, and cautioning the spectators (which were very numerous) to take warning by their miserable and shameful end. (John WHATNELL, on the morning that he suffer'd, deliver'd a paper which he earnestly desired might be published, wherein he declares his wife to have had no hand in his roberies.) ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ PA-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news!
