    3. Good morning to all, It's been a very long time since I've hunted this line... but I thought that I would take a few minutes this morning to post looking for other cousins...also researching this line. As our family information has it: Cadawalader ["Cadd", Cadwallader] WATKINS, a widower, had immigrated circa 1700 from [possibly Dolghollau] WALES... with his very young son, Robert, who was apparently an only child ...to Chester Co. PA. Our information is that at one time Cadd shared a property lne with William Penn. *S* I can find Robert on the Tax Lists for 1725 and 1727, but by that time Cadd may have moved to Philadelphia, or had passed on. My records indicate that Cadd died in Philadelphia PA. Robert WATKINS m. Margaret ______, and had several children, six sons including, Moses, Robert, Benjamin, Reace [Rise, Rhys] with the last child and only daughter, Margaret. The above is from memory....so I'm sure that there's a more precise amount of data in my files. *S* My line happens to be Reace [Reech, Reese, Rise, Rhys], who moved over to Augusta Co. VA and married Sarah BARBER. His sister Margaret m. George BARBER [Jr]. George was a brother to my Sarah BARBER [m. Reace WATKINS]. By the "rule" of Welsh Patronymics....I have often felt that "Reace" had been brought forward from either Robert or his wife Margaret, and may give an indication as to the surname for Cadd's late wife, or Robert's wife Margaret, or may have been Cadd's father's first name. So many options. *S* So...I'm hunting my cousins to see what their hypothesis, or research, has for trying to narrow the options. Wishing all the very best success, Lisa Grimes -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Free Edition. Version: 7.1.405 / Virus Database: 268.11.5/426 - Release Date: 8/23/2006

    3. I looked through the CD of area wills, and there is no will, or set of adm papers that mentions, in any way, the name Cadwalader (any spelling) Watkins...this includes Chester and Phil Cos. There is no will for Robert, either. Reec/Rees/Rice/Reese?Rhyes, etc are all spellings of the same, very common Welsh name..which, because of the patronymic naming system, is found commonly as both given and surname. However, the way this Welsh naming system works is not an arbitrary naming of children, but rather, the taking of the father's given name as the surname of the children...Thus, with this in mind, the children of Robert Watkins would be named Moses, Robert, Benjamin, Reace [Rise, Rhys] and Margaret Roberts. The Reece could certainly be a family name, but whether from a given or surname, maternal or paternal, is impossible to say. If Robert Watkins had been named patronymic (with a father named Cadwalader Watkins),his name would have been Robert Cadwalader). Patronymic naming only involves the father's name and the surname of his children. I checked THE HISTORY OF CHESTER COUNTY PA, by Futhey & Cope for both Watkins, with no luck...so, I'm battin' zero today, I'm afraid.
