Margaret, A woman has two X Chromosomes (and no Y's), from her mother, that she received from her mother, etc.....the Maternal Lineage with mtDNA Men receive an X from their mother (just as his sister would have received), and a Y from their father, who received the Y from his father, etc.....the Paternal Lineage with Y DNA Thus, Genetic Genealogy helps to trace from Mother to Daughter, etc And from Father to Son, etc.... As a woman, you can only participate the Material lineage with mtDNA JFBailey www.baileywick.com -----Original Message----- From: pa-old-chester-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:pa-old-chester-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of eeyore Sent: 22 October, 2006 14:37 To: Nadine Holder; pa-old-chester-l@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [PaOldC] Woodwards of Chester County, Pennsylvania Could someone explain to my ignorant self why DNA projects require Y Dna (from males) in order to establish descendancy? My Woodward ancestors are from my mother (deceased), who had one brother (deceased), and all the male uncles are deceased. My mother had one son (deceased) and me and my sisters. I have no children. So I cannot participate in DNA projects, correct? I'm coming into this discussion late but this is the first I've ever heard anyone mention mtDNA. I don't study nor have I read much about DNA it is all too confusing to me. However..... but in participating in and mtDNA don't you still have to come from a direct line of women? No g-grandmother - her son - his daughter - her daughter - your dad - and you (female). It has to be direct female line right? Just as the pDNA has to be direct male line. YES? -----Original Message----- From: pa-old-chester-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:pa-old-chester-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of JFBailey Sent: Sunday, October 22, 2006 6:25 PM To: 'eeyore'; 'Nadine Holder'; pa-old-chester-l@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [PaOldC] Woodwards of Chester County, Pennsylvania Margaret, A woman has two X Chromosomes (and no Y's), from her mother, that she received from her mother, etc.....the Maternal Lineage with mtDNA Men receive an X from their mother (just as his sister would have received), and a Y from their father, who received the Y from his father, etc.....the Paternal Lineage with Y DNA Thus, Genetic Genealogy helps to trace from Mother to Daughter, etc And from Father to Son, etc.... As I said earlier, I believe we've exhausted the DNA topic, and would suggest that anyone interested in this fascinating, but complex subject, might want to join the list set up by rootsweb, for just this purpose. genealogy-dna-l-request@rootsweb.com you can also surf the archives of that site, as with all rootsweb lists.
