I use the Library of Congress frequently and wanted to supplement Sandra's good advice. 1) You will have to get your researcher ID before you may request books so plan accordingly. 2) Sandra's night-before idea is excellent but depends on step #1. 3) They have an excellent web search engine on www.loc.gov - in fact, it's the same index used 'in-house so you should plan ahead. You can use it to compile a book list, print out and bring with you ready to start filling out the forms (for all their automation, this is still a pencil and carbon paper exercise) 4) Don't go to the main reading room but go to the Genealogy and Family History Room. They have thousands of books shelved in this room which can easily fill many days of 'dead' time while you're waiting for them to pull other books for you. I've had many serendipitous discoveries there.
