Dear list~ I am looking for the location of two or perhaps three different Hayes farms, all located in Chester County. The first farm is that of Jacob Hayes (1804-1877), son of Mordecai Hayes (1780-1847), son of Mordecai Hayes (1738-1824). Jacob is listed as farming in Newlin Township in the 1850, 1860 and 1870 censuses with his wife Caroline (Phillips?) and children John P., William M., Mary H. and Alvina E. Hayes. As late as the 1900 census, his grandson, J. Carroll Hayes, Esq., was recorded as living in Newlin Township. It is also my understanding from my mother who recalls visiting J. Carroll and his family, that this branch of the Hayes family had a mill on the property. While I can find Jacob online in the census, I can't find anything that will tell me where he actually farmed. Does anyone on the list know that bit of information? The second Hayes farm is that owned in the mid 1700s by John Hayes (1726-1762). John Hayes is listed in Futhey & Cope, p. 185, on the West Marlborough List of Taxables in 1753. John appears to have had a son David Hayes (1750?-1827?) who may have had a daughter Ann [Hayes] Keeper(s) (1770?-1838). Did David inherit his father's farm? A Davis Hayes paid excise taxes between 1776 & 1783. Did Ann inherit her father's farm? Did David have a farm or not? If so, where was it located? I do know that Ann & her husband William Keepers bought land located in Newlin & West Marlborough from Mordecai Hayes in 1791, but I don't have a copy of the deed and I don't know where it is actually located. Does anyone happen to have this information? Depending on which Mordecai Hayes sold this property, I believe it possible that Ann [Hayes] Keepers and Mordecai Hayes were either great-uncle and niece or first cousins once removed. I thank you all in advance for any assistance you are able to give. Also, if some of this information has been provided to me in the past, please forgive me as my records are all in boxes at this time. I've been looking at wills, in an attempt to discover some that might help, but in several cases there are more than one possibility. I'll include some, but wills aren't necessarily any good in 'location' specific pieces of land....they can be, but no promises. HAYES, JOHN. West Marlborough.August 30, 1762.
