Good idea to post brickwalls again! One or more simultaneous appearances of the name William Dodd can be found in townships around the Concord/Thornbury/Kennett area always as a Freeman 1718-25 and then from ca 1730 (one report that I haven't seen but that was sent to me) through 1740. Since my William Dodd later seems to have had a lot of carpentry tools and was possibly a shoemaker, it just might be possible that he was an itinerant journeyman moving through adjacent townships plying his trade. There are no other Dodd variant surnames on taxlists in Chester during this period. I am left wondering which of these is my William Dodd, non-Quaker until he applied and joined with wife Catherine in 1746 in Northern Neck, VA, Fairfax MM. From deeds I know that he was "lately of PA" when he moved to VA ca late 1740. The births of his children, to gauge from their marriages or the first appearance of the sons on VA docs and taxlists, would be from ca 1725, nicely coinciding with the Chester taxlists, assuming he married after his last "freeman" designation in 1725. I appeal to all of you to tell me if you see any references to a Dodd/ Dod/Dodds/Dods/Dood or Dadd surname in any states/counties close to Chester during ca 1715-1745. Oral histories say that William Dodd had two wives, so if anyone in Chester has a lost daughter possibly accused of marrying out ca 1725 I'd love to know. And if your families moved from Chester and adjacent counties down to Hopewell or Fairfax MM, perhaps my talking with you would help me discover more about my William Dodd. Happy Holidays to you all and don't forget to order some DNA kits before FamilyTreeDNA.com's December sale is over. Anne Crocker Concord, NC
My brickwall in "old Chester" seems to be ancestors of my 4th Great-grandfather, Lewis TOWNSEND, b. 1784 in Penna. (Chester Co??), m.Deborah EACHUS in March (20th) 1806. They are living in Tredyffrin Twp. with one child in 1810 census. Lewis d. 1814 (Admin 22 Jun 1814). Son Ro(d)ger David is my 3rd Great-grandfather. Family later found in Charlestown Twp. Any help with Lewis would be appreciated. Happy Holidays! I don't mean to sound like an old fuddyduddy, but avid genealogists long ago were advised to not use the words brick wall in their posts. Imagine if you are searching for the surname Brick or Wall how many hits you would get that have absolutely relevance to your search! Perhaps it might be better to say "stuck on" - I don't think stuck (by itself) is a very likely surname! (although you never know for sure) ....just a word to the wise... -----Original Message----- From: Anne Crocker [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Thursday, December 17, 2009 12:28 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [PaOldC] Brickwalls in old Chester: Dodd Good idea to post brickwalls again!
