    1. [PaOldC] Elizabeth Rhoads (1781-1828) - Vincent & Coventry Twps,
    2. Sharon Kleinstuber
    3. Elizabeth Rhoads, born 13 Jan 1781 to John & Catharine (Haldeman?) Rhoads. Died 17 May 1828 - East Vincent Reformed death records. Married Christian Moyer - when? where? (after 1820 census, but before Oct 1822). Was she married to someone prior to 1820? (Maybe John Quigg??) Seems unlikely that her first marriage would be when she was about 40. Contact me directly at snkgenealogy@hotmail.com if you want copies of my family group charts. Sharon

    3. This looks a lot like the John Quigg you're looking for..but, wife not Elizabeth, though the date is awfully close to the one you give. (this is from the Del Co probate court.)...and, it doesn't list any children, which is unusual if there are any. He left everything to his wife. I looked for a will for Fanny, but no luck. This is the only Quigg will for the area up to and including 1825. No mention of an Elizabeth in any will, in any way,.....wife, child, heir, witness, etc. I believe I already sent you the Root will, didn't I? ...and everything I could find on Christian Moyer. There are wills for Sebastian 1793, John 1799, Joseph (the one I sent you), Samuel 1805 and a Samuel 1809....all these in Chester, and quite a few seem to be interrelated....mentions of some in the will of another, etc. If these names sound possible, I'll send you the wills. I also see that there are a lot of Roots in Bucks Co, which might be something to keep in mind. Longaker, Longacre, Longeger, Longenacre, and Longnecker are all somewhat interchangeable, so you can see why given names are so important. The Longacre family was Swedish, and lived in the settlement of New Sweden. The first Longacre arrived in, if memory serves, about 1640, so they've been around for a long time, with many descendants. There are probably 35 or 40 Rhoades/Rhoads in the HISTORY OF CHESTER CO, and a good many Halderman/Haldeman names, too. QUIGG, JOHN, Ridley. June 10, 1816 - July 3, 1816. Estate to wife Fanny, she to be sole executor. Exrs: Wife Fanny. Wits: James MADDOCK and J. H. TERRILL. #468. We're glad you decided to join us but we really need a few given names to go with all those surnames. You'll find, I think, that the chances are better for help from strangers with resources than finding someone actually related and familiar with these folks. There are a good many people on the list that are very knowledgable and helpful, but will need more than a century and surname to go with. I found a John B. Quigg who was the parson of the Hibernia Methodist Church, 1859-1860....Quigg is not a usual name for Chester so odds are, he's related somehow.. If he doesn't fit now, stick the info somewhere and keep it...he may 'fit' later. A James Quigg was on the roll of Capt John Holmes' Co, War of 1812. These 2 are the only memtions of Quigg in THE HISTORY OF CHESTER COUNTY.....ditto for this Quigg.. ?As Schantz is an unusual name, I checked the wills and the only ones that showed up are the following ones, in Lancaster Co. There are also a few in Montg. Co, and will send them to you if you thing that is a possibility. There is nothing for the srname in the wills of Chester or Del Cos. ?April 26, 1776 May 25, 1776SHANTZ, CHRISTIANMother: Barbara Shantz. Step-father: John Nictig.Ex. John Nictig. Sandra " I am interested in corresponding & exchanging info on the QUIGG, RHOADS, LONGACRE, MOYER, HALDEMAN, ROOT & SHANTZ families of Chester County - late 1700s & 1800s. My current research goal is to determine the maiden name of John Quigg"s wife Elizabeth. John was born about 1775; & died about May 1815 in Coventry Twp.Elizabeth possibly born about 1775-1780; & died after 1820. She was recorded as head of household in 1820 Coventy census. And married Christian Moyer in Dec 1820 at Zion Lutheran Church. Elizabeth's maiden name may be Rhoads or Longacre.

    2. George
    3. >From the admirable Morris Genealogy the following is taken: In 1855,Wistar Morris was elected a Director of the Pennsylvania Railroad, and held that office during the rest of his lifetime. He was a Director in nearly all of the leased lines of the Pennsylvania Road, and he was a member of the firm of Morris,Tasker & Morris, which is elsewhere referred to. He took a deep interest in the Pennsylvania Hospital, and was President of the Board of Managers. He was also President of the Board of Managers of Haverford College. The great interest which Mr.Morris had taken in the Hospital during his life inspired his family, after his death,to offer to defray the entire expense of building a new surgical pavilion,to be known as the "Wistar Morris Memorial Ward." The amount required was $150,000,and the building was erected on the grounds at Eighth and Spruce streets.Wistar and Mary (Harris) Morris had issue: Mary Hollingsworth Morris,b.1-18-1864;d.6-25-1891;m.9-6-1883, Rev.Charles Wood,D.D.,b.1851;pastor of the Presbyterian church,Spruce street,Philadelphia, and had issue: Wistar Morris,b.7-23-1884;d.1887. 1. [PaOldC] the first Memorial Day
    2. Sandra Ferguson
    3. According to one source, the first Memorial Day service took place on Belle Isle in the James River, at Richmond, Virginia. The school superintendent, Andrew Washburn, and F.B. May, the Mayor, planned a program for May 30, 1866. Several teachers, and Miss Gibson, a nurse, went to the burial ground of Union soldiers, who had died during the war in a Confederate prison located there. It was raining when Mr. May set up a cross and placed bouquets at each headboard, Miss Gibson sang a hymn, and the others joined in the refrain. R.R. Wilson, who described the scene in the New York Tribune, stated that 'suddenly the clouds parted and a bright ray of sunshine shone on the cross." It is generally conceded that it was General John A. Logan of the Grand Army of the Republic who designated May 30, 1868, "as a day for strewing with flowers or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village, or hamlet churchyard in the land...It is the purpose of the commander-in-chief to inaugurate this observance with the hope that it will be kept from year to year while a survivor of the war remains to honor the memory of the departed." The first official observance in 1868 included a program at the National Cemetery at Arlington and memorial services in various communities... the idea then gradually spread around the country and in 1873 New York was the first state to make the day a legal holiday....others soon followed and now the occasion is set by Presidential Proclamation. So, though no veterans of that long ago war remain, let us hope the memories of ALL the valiant men who served their country, in every war, will always remain with us, particularly on this day of remembrance. Have a safe weekend, shake the hand of every veteran you meet and say "thank you". Sandra

Aside from a few hospitalizations I've also gotten a pace maker (sure wasn't expecting that) and, to top it all off I fell over the dog and broke me foot! Hopefully the cast will come off tomorrow and normalcy will return.....whatever that is! Our daughter also gave me a laptop for Mothers day, which I'm struggling with.....(so far it's winning I'm afraid!!!). So, anyone who wants to jump into the breech and post some data, it would be appreciated......and if you have queries, even better. S. 3. Don, There should be some info on Dutch ships arriving between the 1640's and 1664. So if your subject is Dutch I might be able to help. Do note however, that passenger manifests (if they exist now) are often incomplete. Passengers paying their own way don't show up in manifests of the Dutch West Indies Company, but names of persons with contracts to work for the WIC usually do appear. I can give it a try if your passenger was coming from Holland before 1664. I have Delaware Paters (Dutch), and also two of Jaap Jacob's books. 2. Sandra Ferguson
    3. The name Entrikin/Entrikin/Entrikan/Entrican is not an unusual one in the area. Were your family Quakers when in the Midwest, for they were Quakers in Chester County. I find the largest group in the Kennett Monthly Meeting, with the earliest being in 1736, when Geo. married Mary Woodward. However, my Kennett MM record only covers to 1850, so it can't be of any help to you. My will CD only covers to around 1835, so that wouldn't be of any help either. Have you visited the Chester County Archives and Record online site? They have a will index that would cover any dates where Ephram might have been left something in a parents' will...so, go through the index and see if there are any that 'might' be a family will that would mention Ephram....often a marriage is 'proven' in the way it was mentioned in a will. . You might 'play around' with different combinations of Sarah Littice Carlile/Entriekin and any other children's names and surname spellings. Sometimes that works. Unfortunately, most of my records are too early to be much help, and I couldn't find an Ephram in THE HISTORY OF CHESTER COUNTY PA, by Futhey and Cope. Sandra " Am looking for marriage information for Ephram Russell Entrekin (about 1829-14 Sep 1860) and Levina Carlile (18 Feb 1827-22 May 1895). All indications are they were both born in Chester County. Pennsylvania. Both died in Hornsby, Macoupin, Illinois and are buried in the Kinder Cemetery there. Their first child, Sarah Littice Entrekin, Illinois death certificate states she was born 22 Apr 1850 in Chester County, Pennsylvania. Their second child, John Alfred Entrekin, Illinois death certificate states he was born 8 May 1853 in Pennsylvania."

    1. [PaOldC] knitting ladies from Chester
    2. Sandra Ferguson
    3. I was reading an interesting article about the making of socks during the ACW...we tend to think of the BIG things....battles and death, and yet the little things, like knitting socks for the soldiers was a monumental task for American women and girls...both above and below the Mason Dixon line. It was estimated that soldiers went through a pair of socks a week, so we can only imagine the number of pairs that were knitted. In Alabama "every lady in the state is requested by the governor to knit one pair of socks." In Florida, between June of 1861 and 1862, Susan Bradford knitted 100 pairs, and her Aunt Robinson completed 300 pairs! It was said that women from both sides were rarely seen without knitting needles in their hands! "The women of Chester County, Pa knitted stockings with a patriotic pattern of 1 inch, red, white and blue stripes, around the top. The instructions rallied knitters .'let our brave soldiers know and feel that they are remembered and cared for in every household in the land.......ply fast your needles" Sandra
