    1. Wm. & Isabella Mitchell (both d. 1758, Sadsbury);son John, bro Samuel;sis, Jean; Margaret Lackey -Need Help With This Family!
    2. Wayne County Jeanne
    3. I need help with this MITCELL family. WILLIAM AND ISABELLA MITCHELL died in Sadsbury, Chester Co., 1758. Each one had a Will. I am trying to figure out this family because my gggggrandfather was RICHARD MCCLURE (of Sadsbury), son of DAVID MCCLURE and MARGARET LACKEY. WILLIAM MITCHELL in his will mentions a MARGARET LACKEY and says she is the granddaughter of his sister JEAN MITCHELL. My MARGARET LACKEY (b. 1746, marr. 20 June 1765, d. ????) was the only child of ALEXANDER LACKEY (b. maybe abt 1777; marr. 1745; d. 27 Apr 1747; buried Upper Octorara Presbyterian Church Cemetery) and ANN COCHRAN (dau. of JAMES AND ANN (ROWAN) COCHRAN; Ann married the REV, JOHN ROAN 3 years after Alexander died.). Her husband DAVID MCCLURE (b. abt 1744; d. ????) was the son of RICHARD AND JEAN (SAGE) MCCLURE of Paxtang, Lancaster Co., now Dauphin Co.). Margaret and David were married in Cumberland County. I can find land records for him in Sadsbury for 1774 and 1775 as well as on a Sadsbury tax list for 1774. I have no idea when either one died. Margaret's mother, Ann (Cochran) Lackey Roan, in her Will written 21 April 1788 does not mention her daughter or her daughter's husband but does mention her grandson, RICHARD MCCLURE. Beyond his possible birthdate, his death date, and where buried, and despite a lot of research, I only know that ALEXANDER LACKEY was an auditor for the Orphans Court of Chester County. Per WILLIAM MITCHELL's Will, JEAN MITCHELL could be the mother of ALEXANDER LACKEY and one of my direct ancestors. My research so far has been thru the internet, Will copies, books about Chester County from Ancestry.com and some correspondence with other researchers. Here are the people mentioned in each Will as well as any relationship shown (actual Will abstracts are at the end of this email): WILLIAM MITCHELL WILL, 1758 - People mentioned Wife Isabella (maiden name unknown) Only son John (who is a captive with the French) Brother: SAMUEL MITCHELL His grandson: William Sister: JEAN MITCHELL (married name never given) Her Grandson MITCHELL BLACK Her Granddaughter MARGARET LACKEY Brother-in-law: WILLIAM WADDEL Other Mitchell's mentioned: AGNES MITCHELL, widow of JAMES HENRY Margery, widow of JOSEPH MITCHELL WILLIAM MITCHELL His Son: William Wife's Sister's daughter: MARGARET JOHNSTON Servant: MARY EVANS Other People Mentioned: JOSEPH PARK His son: George JOHN DAVIDSON, JR. 1. John Humes -> William Walton
    2. Mal Humes
    3. I'm looking at collateral Humes lines and found this, pieced together from other people's trees and from some Census records. Other than looking for the origin of John Humes, I'd welcome any help on the Moore and Pennock connections and any thoughts on the Lamborn name that appears to come from the Humes or Moore family. The Moore, Pennock & Newlin surnames and locations in New Garden and Plymouth Meeting to me suggest this could be a Quaker family. Also I am perplexed by the duplicate William Walton references that show them born 30 years apart in two different locations. The latter one shows a burial in Plymouth Meeting in 1857: ............ +William Walton 1770 - 1831 Philadelphia, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA ........ *2nd Husband of Sarah Humes: ............ +William Walton 1800 - 1857 New Garden, Chester, Pennsylvania, USA I'd welcome any help with wills or other references for William Walton to rule out the possibility that there are two that married Sarah, or some confusion here. The different birth dates, locations and death dates and locations have me suspecting it's two different people and the children appear to be born before the death of the earlier one even though they are attached to the later Walton. The Humes + Newlin and Jones marriages also seem a little odd but the Jones marriage seems to be supported by the 1850 census. 1. Philip Lewis & John/Jones
    2. Sandra Ferguson
    3. I looked through the CD of wills and the only mention of an area Philip Lewis I can find in in the will of someone (non-family related), in Hilltown, Bucks Co, 1758....nothing mentioning him in as an heir in any way...or, in his own right. Remember, too, that in this area at least, Jones was often used interchangeably as the name John, in many cases. Griffith John, who came from Wales in around 1710, had children, some of whom used the surname Jones....and there were a lot of them, most living around Tredyffrin. This namespelling change makes it just that much harder when doing Welsh research....(This Griffith did have a son named John)..Griffith died in 1753 and was buried at the Great Valley Baptist Church where, Futhey and Cope say, 7 succeeding generations lie (this was by 1881). So, this could be the tie-in between the families. The 1765 Chester archives have a John John who is listed as a freeman in Charlestown...a freeman was an unmarried man who lived in the twp, but owned no land. Have you visited the CCHS site, online, and checked to see what they might have onhand in the way of records for the Great Valley Church? How about this resource? Found it in a google; EARLY CHURCH RECORDS OF CHESTER COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA, in 3 vols. as follows: Vol. 1: Reamy, Martha. QUAKER RECORDS OF BRADFORD MONTHLY MEETING, 1995. Vol. 2: Meldrum, Charlotte and Martha Reamy. QUAKER RECORDS OF UWCHLAND, GOSHEN, & NEW GARDEN MONTHLY MEETINGS, AND EAST VINCENT REFORMED, 1997. Vol. 3: Meldrum, Charlotte. QUAKER RECORDS OF KENNETT, & LONDON GROVE MONTHLY MEETINGS, & EXTRACTS FROM ST JOHN'S EPISCOPAL CHURCH AND GREAT VALLEY BAPTIST CHURCH. Family Line Publications, 1998. 1. More on Philip Lewis
    2. DAVID KAREN DALE
    3. Since first posting a query about Philip Lewis (1751- 1835) to the PA-Old Chester list less than a month ago, I've received a great deal of information thanks to Sandra, Diana and Mal. I also got wonderful help from a kind soul at the Chester archives who sent me the following from the deed index--and I have these deeds on order. Joseph Rogers to Philip Lewis, 1775, deed Bk. V:96 Philip Lewis Senior to Philip Lewis, 1775, deed bk. V:107 Philip Lewis Junior to John John, 1777, C2:118. Philip Lewis Junior to John John, 1777, T2:526 I am now convinced that the Ohio family history that said Philip's father was an Enoch was wrong (I've suspected as much all along) and that his father was actually Philip Lewis Sr. who lived in Vincent twp from at least 1756 (my first record--membership in a militia company from Vincent and Pikeland). There is an Enoch associated with the family, but I think he was probably a brother to Philip Jr. Philip Sr. was an inmate in Vincent 1765-66 and paid taxes on land in Vincent 1769 and 1771. Philip Lewis Jr. appears to be the man on 80 acres in East Nantmeal, 1771, 1774. I've found Joseph Rogers on Vincent twp tax rolls from the 1720s and additional info on him in various locations--but does anyone know who this John John was? Thanks to several of you, it is now clear that this Lewis family was Baptist. Philip, Enoch, Catherine, a Martha and an Ann Lewis are listed as members of the Great Valley Church before 1770, and Catherine and Enoch became members of Vincent Baptist Church 1771. What records--other than the membership lists and cemetery lists--are available for these two Baptist churches? I've found bits and pieces of the records in Chester archives and some filmed by LDS, but most of those are just the lists (not always in agreement) and a brief history of the churches. Does anyone else have a Baptist Lewis family from either of the two? I have come across references to a David Lewis as a member and a Rees Lewis is on the rolls of one of the histories. I am also now completely convinced that this Lewis family in Chester is the same family I found in Westmoreland/Washington/Fayette counties after 1782. Both Philip Sr. and Jr. were on Westmoreland tax rolls, and in 1785, Catherine Lewis joined the Mt. Moriah Baptist Church in Fayette with a letter of dismissal from the Vincent Church. It is my guess that Catherine was the wife of Philip Sr. and it's obvious she was the good Baptist--so perhaps the daughter of another member of the Great Valley church. The names of both church memberships are consistently Welsh with the most common being Phillips, Jenkins, Thomas, Wells, Davis. I am particularly interested in Thomas because according to the family history, Philip Lewis' first wife (married ca. 1773) was an Elizabeth Wasson/Wason--the widow Thomas. There is an Elizabeth Thomas (listed next to a Thomas Thomas) who transferred membership from Great Valley to Vincent in 1771. Why has that wonderful web site that had ALL the Pennsylvania archives gone away???? Moving right along.... Karen Lewis Dale

A simple google.com search, with "septennial Census" +1779 will get you the following info: A final record, the so-called Pennsylvania Septennial Census, was taken from 1779 to 1863 and bears the name of census but looks more like a tax list. These records - relatively few of which have survived - were generated to enumerate taxpayers for the purpose of determining representation in the state legislature. The septennial census returns usually list only the names and occupations of taxables. Ironically, data concerning slaves is sometimes more detailed in the returns that have survived. The septennial census returns that are available to researchers are the following: Adams, 1800; Allegheny, 1800; Armstrong, 1800; Bedford, 1779, 1786, 1800; Berks, 1779 to 1800; Bucks, 1786, 1800; Centre, 1800; Chester, 1779, 1786, 1800; Columbia, 1821; Cumberland, 1793, 1800; Dauphin, 1786, 1800, 1807; Delaware, 1793, 1800; Fayette, 1786, 1800; Franklin, 1786, 1800 to 1842; Greene, 1800; Huntingdon, 1800, 1821; Lancaster, 1779 to 1800; Luzerne, 1800; Lycoming, 1800; Mifflin, 1800, 1821; Montgomery, 1786 to 1807, 1842; Northampton, 1786, 1800; Northumberland, 1800; Philadelphia, 1793, 1800, 1863; Somerset, 1800; Washington, 1786, 1800; Wayne, 1800; Westmoreland, 1786, 1800; Wyoming, 1849; and York, 1786 to 1807. Septennial census returns can be found at the Pennsylvania State Archives, Third and Forster streets, Harrisburg. Mailing address is PO Box 1026, Harrisburg, PA 17107-1026. Its Web site is found at the URL, www.phmc.state.pa.us (Then click on Pennsylvania State Archives). If you're not using google as a researching tool, you're missing out on a good one! 3. I simply copied and pasted the info on Joseph and Ellis, from my FTM program, and didn't mean to imply I knew nothing more about Nicholas.... he is my direct line, (through his son, Joseph) so I had a separate page for Nicholas and Ann.. (actually, the URL you list is from one of my own sites!) Sandra Nicholas Newlin was born November 7, 1723, in Concord, Chester (now Delaware) County, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Nathaniel and Jane woodward Newlin, and only 9 years old when his father died and he became heir to 400 acres on Doe's Run. Nicholas married Ann Walter the widow of Thomas Walter, in Concord MM, in 1746/7, and these two had the following children; a.. Richard, the eldest child, b. in 1747 and married Mary Goodwin in 1776. 3. Thanks all. This is what I always suspected but never got around to figuring out.I will try to work this information into the George Smedley site.Below is the last mention of the Alice Smedley line in the Cope Smedley Book. Thanks again Lew Smedley #207 ALICE NEWLIN (Jane,Alice,George),b.about 1762;d.Newtown Twp.,8-10-1852,in her 90th year;m.about 1784,Joseph Fawkes,d.Newtown,1814;both buried at Newtown Meeting. She was complained of by Newtown Meeting,9-10-1784,for marriage by a magistrate, but her acknowledgment was accepted 12-17-1784.He was perhaps a son of William Fawkes,of Newtown, and grandson of John and Ann Fawkes, from England. In 1786 Joseph Fawkes was assessed with 138 acres of land,3 horses and 4 cows. This was probably his mother-in law's land.Their residence is now the home of George W Reece,a short distance S.W.of the tavern at Newtown Square. In 1810 jane Newland conveyed to Joseph Fawkes 26 acres,22 perches, and another lot of 4 acres,71 perches, parts of the homestead;and Joseph and wife conveyed the last to Eli Ottey,of Newtown, cabinet maker,April 4,1814.The will of Joseph Fawkes is dated June 16,1814,and proven Oct.8,1814,in which he gave to Eliza Pineset $50,and the residue to Alice, his wife. The will of Alice Fawkes is dated 11-26-1841,with codicils in 1846,1847, 1848,1849 and 1852,by which she devised the most of her estate to Sarah, wife of Joseph Lindsay, and to her children,of whom she named Jane N, Mary,Alice F,James,Sarah,Robert,Joseph and Elizabeth.Other legatees mentioned were William Hunter and his sister Elizabeth Bishop,Benjamin Orr and son John,William and Jonathan Hood,Alice,Daniel and Mary Mendenhall,Jane N Peirce,Sarah Kennedy,Mary Fawkes, daughter of Richard and Jane Fawkes, and Newtown Meeting,to which she gave $40.No relationship to any of the legatees is shown.Jane N Lindsay married Eli Reece and died before the testator, leaving two children,Alice Ann and George W,of whom the latter occupies the old homestead.

    2. Both of you are correct. There were two Nathaniel Newlins that married Jane Woodwards. Nathaniel Newlin 1690/91-1732, son of Nathaniel Newlin and Mary Mendenhall, married 1711 Jane Woodward 1687-1737, daughter of Richard Woodward and Jane?. Nathaniel Newlin, son of John Newlin and Mary Woodward married 1757 Old Swedes Church, Phil. Jane Woodward, daughter of Edward Newlin and Alice Smedley. Barclay Richards

    3. It Appears that this Nathaniel Newlin and Jane Woodward were 1st cousins At Goshen Monthly Meeting 3-20-1758:Francis Yarnall was appointed to assist women Friends in drawing testimony against Jane Woodward for marriage by a priest to her first cousin, but at the next meeting she offered an acknowledgment which was left under consideration. Two months later her acknowledgment was accepted, and Lewis Reece was appointed to read it in a First-day meeting at Newtown, according to the custom of that day. Nathaniel Newlin received a certificate from Cocord Monthly Meeting 9-4-1751,to Bradford, and resided in the township of Newlin,so named for his grandfather, but returned to Concord about 1754,without changing his membership. He made acknowledgment to Bradford Mo.Mtg. 3-16-1758 for his marriage by a priest to his first cousin, and on 12-21-1759,obtained a certificate to Goshen. He doubtless settled on the land of his wife,in Newtown. In 1777 he was assessed with 175 acres of land,1 horse,2 cows and 2 sheep. He does not appear in 1786 and was probably deceased. His widow was living in 1810,when she conveyed about 30 acres of land to her son-in-law,Joseph Fawkes. She died intestate, but no letters of administration appear to have been granted, and her daughter succeeded to the estate.

    3. Thanks Barclay - couldn't immediately track this down in my copious numbers of Newlins and Woodwards. The Nathaniel and Jane who married at Old Swedes in 1757 were first cousins and thus could not marry as Quakers. Yes, the Jane who married Nathaniel Jr was daughter of Richard and Jane and was sister of Edward Woodward, father of the second Jane. I didn't have daughter Alice for them. There were actually quite a few first cousin marriages in the Woodward family finally resulting in two albino children born (as I recall in Nebraska) in later years. They were also geniuses and graduated college at a very early age (if I remember correctly - don't offhand recall their names). You meant Edward Woodward and Alice Smedley of course. Edward had three wives (Abigail Edge, Alice Smedley, and Elizabeth Jarman) and here is his will abstract: Name: Edward Woodward Title: Yeoman Description: Decedent Residence: Newtown Date: 15 May 1754 Prove Date: 12 Nov 1754 Book Page: C:511 Remarks: Edward Woodward. Newtown. Yeoman 5/15/1754. November 12, 1754. C. 515. Provides for wife Elizabeth. To son George my plantation in Newtown whereon I dwell containing about 200 acres as the same was conveyed to me by my former wife and Robert Tippin with stock, he paying legacies as follows: To daughter Jane Woodward £60.
