    3. Could this be the same Charles Porter of Birmingham Township who lost his shirt in the war? I checked a few sources and couldn't find anything on children. It did look possible this could be the same Charles Porter. http://dsf.chesco.org/archives/cwp/view.asp?a=3&Q=615877 Chester County Register of Revolutionary War Damages (British Depredations) "This register, compiled in November 1782, contains accounts of property of Chester County residents seized or (not as frequently) destroyed, without compensation, by the British Army, aided by "adherents" (Pennsylvania Tories), during their march toward and occupation of Philadelphia, from the fall of 1777 until June 1778. Most of the accounts are for damages that occurred during the British march through Chester County in mid-September 1777." "...Charles Porter of Birmingham Township, a "Very Poor Man" who claimed the loss of his "Good Cow" and "new Shirt." -----Original Message----- According to info in Gilbert Cope's files at the Gen. Soc. of PA, one Charles Porter married on 13 Apr 1751 to Elizabeth Eavenson, born 25 Apr 1722, daughter of Joseph Eavenson and Catherine George. Marriages presumably in Chester Co. Would be interested in identities of any descendants of Charles Porter and Elizabeth Eavenson.

A project for the surname of PUGH was much needed. There is also one for JAMES, and boy has that ever been useful in sorting out the various JAMES families of Chester county!!! I descend from Jesse Pugh and wife Alice MALIN (Quakers) of Chester county. I see that my Lewis Pugh who immigrated to Virginia in 1695 from Merionethshire, Wales is not part of this lineage. Another researcher had told me that Lewis's father was the David Pugh who settled in Chester Co., PA but I now see that it is impossible. My ancestor Lewis Pugh may not have been a Quaker as he was a member of the Anglican Church in Virginia (but most people were). He returned to Merionethshire around 1730 to collect an inheritance that was tied up in the courts and died around 1740 in Wales. Two of his sons went to Wales to assist in the court proceedings, John Pugh born 1704 and David Pugh born 1706, and they never returned to Virginia. We are trying to sort out Lewis's descendants. We think that one of the sons who went to Wales to assist Lewis had a family in Virginia before he left. We are using DNA testing to sort out these Pugh lines. I am the coordinator of a Pugh surname DNA project. So far we have seven people who we have found descend from Lewis Pugh who settled Virginia. We also have two men in our group who descend from one of the Pennsylvania Pugh lines of Hugh Pugh. They just found they were from the same line a few days ago and now are using the paper trail to confirm the relationship. Another in our group is a descendant of John Pugh b. 1801 in Pennsylvania. This man is not sure where his ancestor John was born but he may be the son or grandson of a Mark or Martin Pugh from Lancaster County. If anyone is interested in learning more about DNA testing, let me know. I do have one piece of information that I can add to the genealogy Mal sent me from this website: www.peugh.com/america.html. The Samuel Peugh who died in 1779 is my direct line. He was born in Richmond County, Virginia and is a grandson of Lewis Pugh mentioned above. Samuel is not a descendant of the Pennsylvania Pughs - this was confirmed through a paper trail and DNA testing. His nephew was Spencer Pugh who also was born in Richmond County, Virginia. I have more information on this family if anyone would like it. Sincerely, Daniela

    1. [PaOldC] West Jersey was Quaker before Penn + THOMPSON family
    2. JRBinkley
    3. We hear a lot about William Penn opening his land to Quaker immigration -- I was a grandmother before I learned that there was already a Quaker territory 6 years before him, West Jersey -- New Jersey having been split into the Proprietary Colonies of E and W Jersey by a line running from NW to SE. East Jersey was settled by small landowners and entrepreneurs, while West Jersey was settled by Quakers who organized in London in 1676/7, although the Duke of York had been given the land in 1664. For a good text on this, see < http://www.westjersey.org/sjh/sjh_chap_2.htm >. For a website showing a class plan about this for middle school students, including sources to read, see < http://www.state.nj.us/state/history/coloniesofeastwest12.html >. From my friend Bob's Quaker families, here's an example of one, and 'Irish-Quaker' family, that first settled in NJ and later moved across the Delaware R., some of them ending in Chester County around Kennett Square. John THOMPSON b. 1635 in Kirkfenton, Yorkshire, went with his parents and brother Andrew to Ireland 1658 (Quaker escapees). On 9.16.1677 he and his wife Jane HUMBLES left County Wicklow with 4 children and a servant, Wm. HALL, on the ship Mary of Dublin under Capt. John WALL. They landed at Elsinburgh, in Salem County NJ on 12.22.1677 (I picture landing in a sleet storm). John and Andrew donated land for the Quaker Meeting in West New Jersey. Meeting records at Elsenboro reportedly include a family history written by Andrew. Immigrant John and his son James b. 8th mth 1668 stayed in New Jersey, but James's son James THOMPSON Jr. b. 8.26.1712 moved across the river, first going to Leacock Twp in what is now Lancaster Co, then marrying Sarah WORSLEY 3.22.1735 at New Garden Mtg and moving down to Mill Creek Hundred in New Castle Co DE. Their son Daniel THOMPSON b. 11.16.1737 in Mill Creek Hd m. Elizabeth CHAMBERS b. 5.14.1743, descendant of the immigrant CHAMBERS family who settled on the present DE-PA line where it is now straddled by White Clay Creek State Park. Three more generations and we find Eli THOMPSON b. 4.15.1825 near Toughkenamon and dying 2.8.1903 in Kennett Square. His descendents include many who stayed in Kennett or spread into the surrounding countryside, and one who moved back down into Newark DE after WWII. Quaker records show THOMPSONs in for example Mill Creek Hundred, New Garden, London Grove, and West Grove Mtgs. Janet

According to Futhey and Cope, Nathaniel Porter was one of the first trustees, on Sept 1, 1786, when the Brandywine Manor Presbyterian Church was incorporated....the church was also known as Forks of Brandywine Church... In a F&C bio on Francis Gardner, and original emigrant from Coleraine, Ireland, in 1773, it says that his dau, "Eleanor Gardner, married Nathaniel Porter and moved to Washington County in it's early settlement." Nathaniel Porter's name also appears on the 1774 West Nantmeal land owner's tax list. The 1765 Chester Archives show many Porters....with this one; Nathaniel Porter owned 100 acres in West Nantmeal..had 2 horses and 1 cow....no sheep and no servants or slaves. 3. Thank you, Tim for posting this list of the 116th Regt. I wish my grgrandfather's brother showed up on this list! Aaron J LANDIS died at Fredericksburg in the battle on St Marye's Heights on 12/13/1862. He was in Co C of the 116th. St Clair Mulholland wrote a book about the 116th since he was a Capt then, (which I obtained on library loan.) At some point the 116th joined with the Irish brigade from NY. He mentioned Aaron LANDIS, and his brother Allen LANDIS, who were both in the 116th Co C which he commanded for a while in his book. Allen survived the battle at Fredericksburg, but caught TB and died later in 10/1864 in a military hosp in Philadelphia, age 20. Aaron's place of burial has never been located in Frederickburg. I wrote to the battlefield park there, and also to Carlisle Institute. Even had a friend who lived near there check out the park and lists of men who died. His file from the Nat'l Archives only contained muster roll slips, even for several weeks after he died, he was thought captured and reported missing, at first. But then, they discovered that he had died in the first battle on 12/13.........only age 19. He had enlisted only 2 months earlier on 8/11/1862 at Philadelphia. After his brother Allen died in 1864, my gr2grandfather Daniel LANDIS, who lived in Warwick Twp., went to Phila to claim his body and brought him back to Chester co where he is buried in St Peter's UCC cemetery in Knauertown, Warwick Twp. On the bottom of his tombstone is written that a brother died in Fredericksburg. The family never knew where Aaron was buried in VA. I often wonder how long it took to get word that he had died? There were many men who died there, and in Mulholland's book, they had a hard time burying them for lack of enough wood. I have some old letters that were written back and forth between Allen and his father, and even Allen didn't know he was dead for several weeks, and was in the same Co. C. There was mention about muster pay that had never been paid to him, but the file I received from Natl Archives didn't show if it was paid to the family or what. There wasn't much in the file for the price you pay to receive copies! Diana in AL Thankful that my grgrandfather Daniel W. LANDIS was too young to serve then, after losing 2 brothers. Daniel W.
