    1. [PaOldC] brick Wall Crye
    2. Gma
    3. Yes, I have a brick wall. I have a William Crye who was born 1752 in the IOM and came with his family to Chester Co. PA and grew up. He moved sometime befiore 1775 to Mecklinburg Co. NC where he married and served in the Rev. War. Info on where he was raised came from his Rev. War papers. I have searched, had people search, and querried for years regarding this William Crye. His father was John. The Rev. War papers state he lived on a farm. I find nothing to place them in Chester Co. PA. I have thought about the county line thing and have looked in Lancaster, Deleware, ect,. but continue to find nothing. Have even thought with the Irish brogue possibly the name might have been pronounced and spelled Craigh, but again, find nothing. William was one of the older children of a family of 7, and I continue to find nothing on this Crye name. 1775 forward I have them traced, 1775 backward is a road block. Where are suggestions to look? I could use a Christmas break here. ha ag ----- Original Message ----- From: "Peggie Shaw" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, December 17, 2009 10:18 AM Subject: [PaOldC] list administrator thread > > Hello, I have been inactive on this list for quite sometime. 1. [PaOldC] Akins
    2. Rose Schaer
    3. Hello - MY BRICKWALL & a bit of a note, Just thought I would share some mispellings which might give someone else some ideas. In Missouri, my Beals was transcribed as Rails. In NC my Michael Claver was transcribed as Miychall Kleiber. Sometimes we have to be as creative in interpetation as the creator or transcriber was in the old records. I am looking for a James Akins 1753- 1827 family. I found him & Roseanna buried at Old Eagle School in Tredyffrin. I have no idea where he was born or who were his parents. ANY IDEA?? I have about worn out the Pennsylvania internet sites. He had a son John Hamilton Akins [1797- Montgomery Co. PA 1861] Marion Co. IA, who was a shoemaker. John md Eleanor Gilmore Lindsay (father was a REV WAR soldier). Thanks for any help finding James & Roseanna's parents or a REV war for him. He was the right age & lived in the middle of some turmoil around Valley Forge, etc. Thanks Rose

    1. [PaOldC] Brickwalls in old Chester: Dodd
    2. Anne Crocker
    3. Good idea to post brickwalls again! One or more simultaneous appearances of the name William Dodd can be found in townships around the Concord/Thornbury/Kennett area always as a Freeman 1718-25 and then from ca 1730 (one report that I haven't seen but that was sent to me) through 1740. Since my William Dodd later seems to have had a lot of carpentry tools and was possibly a shoemaker, it just might be possible that he was an itinerant journeyman moving through adjacent townships plying his trade. There are no other Dodd variant surnames on taxlists in Chester during this period. I am left wondering which of these is my William Dodd, non-Quaker until he applied and joined with wife Catherine in 1746 in Northern Neck, VA, Fairfax MM. From deeds I know that he was "lately of PA" when he moved to VA ca late 1740. The births of his children, to gauge from their marriages or the first appearance of the sons on VA docs and taxlists, would be from ca 1725, nicely coinciding with the Chester taxlists, assuming he married after his last "freeman" designation in 1725. I appeal to all of you to tell me if you see any references to a Dodd/ Dod/Dodds/Dods/Dood or Dadd surname in any states/counties close to Chester during ca 1715-1745. Oral histories say that William Dodd had two wives, so if anyone in Chester has a lost daughter possibly accused of marrying out ca 1725 I'd love to know. And if your families moved from Chester and adjacent counties down to Hopewell or Fairfax MM, perhaps my talking with you would help me discover more about my William Dodd. Happy Holidays to you all and don't forget to order some DNA kits before FamilyTreeDNA.com's December sale is over. Anne Crocker Concord, NC

    3. As list admin of the PA-census-lookup list, I have "known" Sandra for years. She administers this list extremely well. She, like myself, is a genealogy nut and we love to offer the benefit of our years of experience to anyone who is researching their family history. Please remember that everyone, even your list admin, also has a life and sometimes the time needed to supply those extras to the list is just not there - especially now, with the holidays coming. And sometimes people fall ill. Your list admin is here to make sure the list runs smoothly and to take care of any problems. Anything provided above that level is a generous benefit - and sadly most people only realize its importance when it is no longer being offered. Sandra will return to active status when she is able - in the meantime, try helping each other! When doing your research, first and foremost, check the list archives! You will find a wealth of information that has already been looked up and posted; why then should a volunteer do it all over again? Check the archives. If you don't know how, go to Rootsweb, to the area for Newslists, check on threaded archives (or search archives) and type in the name of your list. I love the threaded archives feature - just to browse and look at all the information that is there - and it goes back for years!! Google the name - amazing what you can find. Go to USGenWeb's Archives and search, there's a wealth of information there as well, as does Rootsweb itself. If you have lots of deep roots in Old Chester County, invest in Accessible Archives (abt $55 yr) - all of the old newspapers/periodicals are transcribed there, and it also covers NJ and Del now (I believe). I know I found tons of information there myself. There are other lists dedicated to the Chester County area; go to Rootsweb and find them and sign up. There is one that covers Chester & Delaware Counties (which once were one county). You can visit my list as well.....we have lots of volunteers, and the censuses go back to 1790. Think outside the box. Consider alternate spellings of last names. Hey, no one said this would be easy, but you know, compared to 20 yrs ago - when all info was gathered on foot - what is available online now is phenomenal. Note: the list archives - that is the reason why all list admins say to post all information to the list, do not reply to people privately! All posts are archived; therefore all of that information is saved, and just waiting for someone to look at it. If your family is from Old Chester County, you likely have thousands of unknown relatives - imagine all of them posting looking for the same information, having to look it up each time! -----Original Message----- From: Kathi Jones-Hudson [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Wednesday, December 16, 2009 8:07 PM To: [email protected]; [email protected] Subject: Re: [PaOldC] re; list inactive Dottie: I've been struggling with how to respond to your message all day ... here goes. List Admins are not here to hold your hand, solve or help you with your personal genealogy research. If they can make some suggestions for research that's great but it's not a specific duty of a List Admin. List members may be more helpful in answering queries in many cases as they may be researching similar lines. In surname lists it would be unrealistic to assume that any List Admin would have experience or knowledge for all lines in that surname or geographic areas of research. List Admin duties are mostly administative (just as the name suggests). They keep lists on track, put out any fires, i.e., members arguing, take care of the spam that hopefully gets stopped by the filters, weed out legitimate emails that get caught in spam filters, help people with their list subscription. They keep informed of general problems with list emails, chat with other admin's about specific ISP problems, etc. Sandra goes way beyond what is expected of an List Admin. On some lists even those that are pretty active you only hear from the List Admin when there's a problem and people don't necessarily even know the name of the Admin. As long as Sandra follows List Admin rules, there's no cause of complaint that could be brought (or even should be brought) against her to RW. RW supports List Admin's and rarely removes one against their will unless something really bad has happened. As long as she keeps an active email for RW's to contact her, doesn't let a list get out of control, does not have massive causes of complaint against her Rootsweb will let her manage this list her way. It's very quiet on most lists right now always is before a major holiday. Let Sandra have her brief hiatus and when she's ready to step back in full-time and full speed ahead in the new year, that's up to her. But there is no reason for a new list admin. She certainly has my support as a list member and fellow list admin. 2. Fellow list memembers: List members, I do not think any fingers need to be pointed at anyone. If Sandra is inactive and non - responding to messages, then perhaps a new administrator is needed for this list. Any volunteers should probably contact rootsweb.com, not sure, but the point of having the list is to help people with their genealogy searches in Chester County. This list has been gratefully helpful to me over the past 9 years, yes, people sometimes get their feelings hurt, however, this list is intended to hold your hand and solve your research for you, it is for you to be able to find information and learn and to help other people. So everyone "buck up". Sandra, please get back to what you love doing or if you have personal reasons for not responding to the list, then notify rootsweb and help the list get a new administrator. It seems the list is missing an administrator. Dottie/ searching for GARRETT/GARAT/GARRETT/LEASE/LEES

Searching the archived list posts has provided a lot of information I did not even know was available anywhere before being a member of this list. When I was a newcomer I received - and continue to receive welcome good advice. Our administrator, Sandra, is the best, most helpful list-admin I have found anywhere. Google is an excellent first choice for finding many many kinds of information -- so good that books have been written by non-Google people regarding even more ways to utilize it. Anna

    1. Re: [PaOldC] Arizona Contact
    2. SANDRA IS WONDERFUL as a list administrator. She has volumes of knowledge, and knows where to search for specifics. We all agree on this! Having said that, I can attest to [email protected] frustration. I have been a member of this list for years. I don't post though. I don't like being "yelled" at by email from an over-zealous administrator. My "error" was that I copied an AZ obituary with ties to OLD PA ancestry, that I thought others on the list might find helpful. I typed it word-for-word. It was not posted, and Sandra "yelled" at me via email saying only necessary information in a post. So I swallowed my pride and reposted using only names, dates, and locations. Again, it was not posted. Her personal email to me was, "Why are you trying to post this again, when I already told you not too!!!" She never responded to tell me what I put in that obit that was not supposed to have been in it. I have NO IDEA what was the real issue here, AND I DON'T CARE anymore. So, all of you have a contact here in Arizona, who looks at the obituaries and thinks, that might be useful to someone on the list, but I don't post, because I never could figure out what the problem was with the information I was trying to relate to the rest of you. Doreen

    1. [PaOldC] Kudos for Sandra (was No action on List)
    2. My two cents (and maybe a bit more) ... Newbies often are so excited about joining a mailing list that they fail to read the rules provided in their welcome email before they post their first queries (and we've probably all been guilty of this one or twice, too, on one list or another). Much of "getting one's nose out of joint" after a few suggestions by list members to do a bit more research before posting could be prevented by knowing how to use the list properly. It does get tiring to read the same questions over and over that were asked months or years before and could be answered easily by searching the list's archives or Googling first. If you don't know how to do this, just ask. And, Sandra, you've done a terrific job as list administrator, often going above and beyond when "Googling" or a query didn't provide the results for which we sought! I've long respected your knowledge, your resources and your energy and enthusiasm in helping us connect with our ancestors in and around Chester County. We "old" members of this list know you're the best!!! Eleanor (researching Quaker lines in Chester Co, including Maris, Hadley, Lewis, Lindley and others)

    1. [PaOldC] Missing Sandra
    2. I'm sorry that a simple request for a common courtesy offended this list member. Sandra has always managed the list with a wonderful degree of expertise and patience and helpfulness not found on other genealogical sites. We learn from her dedication and administrative talents, and if we need to be brought into line with a stronger rein, then, for the good of everyone participating, we need to respect her guidance. This list has had LOTS of activity which Sandra handled beautifully, sharing unselfishly her huge wealth of resources. It apparently took only one bad apple to change its character. Thanks, Sandra, and God bless. We miss your contributions and will look forward to your improved health and quick return in 2010. Frances
