I don't believe Faces of America was the name of what I want to re-see, is it? What I was referring to was a 4 part series , probably a couple years ago, searching for the ancestry of some well known African Americans....Don Cheadle, was one (whose family had been owned by Indians in the Carolinas, and who were taken to Indian Territory by their Indian owners in the days of Andrew Jackson......just amazing) Chris Rock was another, Mya Angelou, Skip Gates, Tina Turner, and quite a few others. To see how AA research was done, back when ancestors didn't even have last names....and how they were able to trace some back to their specific origins in Africa....it was all utterly fascinating. I've always thought, no matter HOW HARD my own research might be, it couldn't hold a candle to AA research. S.
Hi, Faces of America & Who do you think you are, Are two different programs and different presentations. There is another again a different program on BYU TV (Direct TV) on Monday evening at 8pm mountain time. My websites : http://freepages.folklore.rootsweb.com/~bonsteinandgilpin/
Sandra et al, If you go to the PBS website and put in your zipcode, it will call up your local PBS stations. Where I am in SE PA it is on Wed evenings @ 8 PM. It is called "Faces of America" with Henry Louis Gates. He is fab as is the show. "So who do you think you are" was very well done also! Why can't I get them to help me....$$ no object for them it seems. Well connected also. Keep searching ya'll ! Sandra they, the Gates shows are on the PBS website and can be downloaded if your connection is fast enough <G> They were fun to see, as usual. And if everyone has access to WBYU they have the Generations Project, I have only seen one, but it was most interesting - a different turn on genealogy. The woman who was featured thought how weak she was for needing her friends and family - when her Irish ggmother came to America alone in 1891 and made her way with no help from family or friends - well you know that turned out to be wrong <G> Oh so wrong. GGmother left the tale she came to America because she was hungry, and the featured woman thought she meant for success and chances in the new world, turns out it was literal hunger. It was an interesting show, DishTV has WBYU and some cable companies have it. These two questions are at the heart of the new PBS series Faces of America with Henry Louis Gates, Jr. The Harvard scholar turns to the latest tools of genealogy and genetics to explore the family histories of 12 renowned Americans. As I said earlier....lots and lots of John Millers...here, there, and everywhere.....I think we are speaking of different John's...different generations,. IMMIGRATION OF THE IRISH QUAKERS, a very wonderful book.. says John Miller, son of John Miller, born at Breckenbrough, in Parish of Kerbywilk, in Yorkshire, in 1633 went to Ireland as a planter, and married Ann, dau of Wm Clibborn, who was born in 1630, at Cowley, County Durham, England...their children were Wm 1659 ;Margaret 1662; John 1665; Thomas 1667; Abraham 1670; Isaac 1672. One John, "possibly" a son of the above John Miller, was the John Miller who married Mary Ignew. Gayon Miller, who first appeared in Chester Co in 1702 is thought to have been a near relative of John Miller, of New Garden (this is the John Miller who married Mary Ignew..... " John Miller, wife (received 4 m 4, 1709) and children from Grange near Charlemont, in 1709" this is from the Newark or Kennett MM records. from a lookup; (the family became members of the New Garden MM, and there are pages of Millers in the index of the meeting records.) MILLER, JOHN. New Garden. Joyner. August 17, 1714/5. December 8, 1714/15, A. 10. To wife not named 1/3 of real and personal estate. To son Joseph, the plantation I now live upon containing 300 acres. I looked into the book IMMIGRATION OF THE IRISH QUAKERS, by Myers, after seeing that Gayen Miller was a witness to John's will, and knowing that Gayen had come from Ireland....and found them both...so, John was born in Ireland, not England..... "John Miller, possibly a son of John Miller who was born in Yorkshire, ...son John was born in 1665, at Moate, as his parents had gone to Ireland in 1657. Diana - Have you tried the Friends Library at Swarthmore College or the Quaker Records at Haverford College? They may know a researcher who can help you at each library if you don't live in the area. I have found some of my Meredith ancestors there, but I live close enough to visit in person. Karen In a message dated 2/27/2010 9:12:02 P.M. Speaking as one who is familiar with the name, THAT one I know about..and, there are several spellings of that one, too...the one I'm familiar with is Farquarson...... I've always been sorry that our name wasn't what it probably was originally....Fergusson.....son of Ferguson....I've always liked that double s in the middle, and our family probably just dropped one of the sses, somewhere along the way....that's similar to Andersson.... meaning son of Anders.....a Swedish name, if memory serves. There's much that is fascinating about research, including Scottish, that's for sure....we belonged to the Clan Ferguson Society for many years, and the concept of the septs was of interest - different families banded together under the wing, so to speak, of a larger, more powerful clan.... the septs fought together with the clan, if needed, and 'enjoyed' the protection of the clan. Thus, there are many different names that may belong to a clan, but not share the same names....Ferries, Grevsack, Hardy & Kiddie are all septs of the Clan Ferguson...and, there are others....I just happen to remember these.because they were odd. This is just one of the interesting things one could find, when researching.........I always feel sorry for folks who seem to just 'collect' names and dates, when there are so many fascinating things to read about. Every culture and ethnic group brings with its own history, totally different from any other....this should be what genealogy is all about...not only those names and dates, but WHO they were, how they came to be where they were, and why. S.
Found this in my Scotland research----- Ferguson spelled as Farquharson I never would have guessed! Another of my favorites is Sinkler instead of St. Clair!
