Do you mean you got copies of the forms submitted by the woman, who joined the DAR with these fellas as her ancestors? Those forms should have the sources she lists for the data...one source for each generation....(not a copy of that documentation, but what the documentation is.) Are we talking about the same thing?...and, what is it you're looking to find using the DAR forms? Is it the military 'history' on these fellas? If so, have you checked with the NARA to see what service and/or pension records they have? Sandra I have just received the DAR long forms for Philip RAPP and his son Barnet RAPP, the first a Patriot, the younger a Private. The source is named, but copies of the data are not included, so I'd like to find this but am not sure how to go about it. The source named is my subject line. I have googled this in various forms, but I haven't found Barnet and am sure there is more to find. Does anyone have online sources? Also, is anyone familiar enough with holdings at the Historical Societies of Chester County and of Pennsylvania to know if this type of record might be there? I'm just not familiar enough with this war and the records available to know what to look for (just as I'm getting a handle on Civil War records, I learn of Revolutionary War ancestors--not a bad "problem" to have :)) -- No virus found in this outgoing message. I have just started the process for the DAR recently so can be of some help. First - find http://www.dar.org/ and find your nearest DAR Chapter and contact them and let them know you want to apply for membership. My local chapter membership chairman immediately held a training session for what was needed and looked over what I already had and told me how to fill in the blanks. Don't expect them to do the footwork for you though - they will tell you what you need not how to get it. It is going to boil down to birth, death, and marriage records for each person in your line back to the last authenticated ancestor that you see on the long form. Wills sometimes help if they are very specific. Census records for each decade are a big help too, especially if your family moved a lot so you can authenticate that you have the right people connected in your ancestry. Then run, don't walk to your nearest LDS Library - you can find your nearest one on www.familysearch.org . They are the ones who can help you with how to find the records. They are volunteers and have lots of experience and are wonderfully helpful. They will also have a copy of the latest edition of the Handy Handbook for Genealogists which has all the addresses of where to write for county records in the various places your ancestors lived and also a list of what records they have in hand. If you don't have a nearby LDS Library you can find similar information on the various County web sites online at USGenWeb (that is information on where to write and sometimes actual records are online. Be aware that there may be a lot of gaps as many court houses burned during the Civil War and records were lost so then you will have to start getting alternate sources) Your local DAR can help once you have collected everything you can then they can tell you what some acceptable alternate records might be. An example, especially for older generations that won't have official birth and death records - tombstone inscriptions of birth and death can be acceptable from a reputable source or photographs. When you make copies from alternate sources be sure to copy the title page and publication information so the DAR can assess the credibility of the source. Sandy is absolutely correct that you need to get your ancestor's pension records from NARA. Also find out if his widow ever applied for a pension. NARA had two pages on my ancestor which included very little information - just that he did receive a pension and his date of death. I then ordered his widow's pension application records and his papers were attached to her file - pages and pages with birth, death, and marriage records and all he could remember of his war service - wonderful stuff. But expensive - your DAR representative can tell you by looking at your long form whether you will need to get these records or whether acceptable information is already on file at the DAR. Be sure you tell NARA you want the whole record as you will want to see it all. Otherwise they pick and choose with what they think is significant. Hope this helps you get a start. You probably won't find much online as tons and tons of genealogical information is not up there yet. When you write for records be sure to include full names, dates, and places and possible alternate spellings. It is not any county clerk's job to search for you - you have to give them the information. And then you may still not get what you need. Get to know your cousins in areas where you need information and see if they can help. Also check the Random Acts of Kindness Genealogical Web Site where dozens of people volunteer to do lookups all over the country (got a 150 page will through one of their volunteers when the County Clerk had said no record). I had a cousin in one area where I got back a "no record" on a marriage record from the County Clerk and when the cousin went there he climbed a ladder and got the record right away - the clerks just didn't like to climb ladders! I just found a silk on gauze family record sampler on ebay for sale. It was done in 1825 by Ann BALDWIN of Chester County. The item # is 6627210855. I have no connection with this seller. I just hope this finds its way to one of the listers' homes! Oh boy, what a find! Lorraine

Eastern Standard Time, PA-OLD-CHESTER-D-request@rootsweb.com writes: I am thinking of going to Salt Lake City next month, so maybe I can check this out at that time. Otherwise, I don't know how to get a copy. Has anyone ever asked SLC for copies of a book or magazine article?" You will love Salt Lake City. The volunteers walk around and ask if you need help. I watched them help a blind person, help children and people who walked in and had not started their family search. They let you bring a lot in - my favorite was the lady with the two drawer filling cabinet with wheels! You get and put back the film yourself. Use the on-line catalog before you go. They have many books that you take right off the selves. They also had many PC and they allowed you to check your home e-mail. Take a permanent marker - write your name on the back of your copy card - that way when you leave it in the machine you can reclaim (I did this a few times). Also take CD's (they do sell). They have copy machine you can copy from micro film to CD. They also had many copy machines at very reasonable p rice for both micro film and paper. Check their site for classes - they are free. If you want hotel info (write to me off list). They had a free rail system right in the area of the library. I stayed in hotel next to library and never rented a car. Other than your air transportation to Salt Lake City it is not an expensive trip. I managed to eat for $20 or less per day - of course I was not eating at fancy restaurants or drinking alcohol. By all means, do not forget www.clossonpress.com. There is a wealth of genealogical books here, complete with a search engine. Chester Co. pulled up 15 books. Yvonne
You can get a form from your local LDS Library to request copies of items that are not on film. You have to know what pages from what vol/issue number that you need. The local volunteer will explain the procedure. Usually it is filling out the form and sending money for the number of pages you want copied. I don't know what the cost is now, but they will mail the copies directly to your home address. I first asked for copies of the index, as I had no idea what pages I needed. Then once I received that, I sent another form for copies of actual page numbers from the index. Of course, the item was from a book, and not a periodical. When I sent off my form, I sent too much money, and they sent me a credit for future use, when they sent the copies of the pages! Now also you can do the same thru your library. My local library sent a fax to another library where the resource was, and they sent copies back to my library. Then thelocal librarian called me to come and pick them up. That was very helpful way, too! The CCHS does have an offering of books for sale but, by no means are they all those that are published, I'm afraid... their offerings seem static. If looking for new ones, far better to search the book sellers. However, it's nice, I think, to 'give' your money to local historical societies, rather than book stores, if possible. http://www.chestercohistorical.org/ Sandra "The Chester county Historical Society has a "museum shop" that sells, amongother things, books. As the person is buried in Bucks Co, you need to be addressing your questions to that county, rather than Chester.. Church records are the only place deaths were recorded in those days.....no vital records kept then, so you'll just have to dig through whatever records for Bucks Co you can find. As with your Phil. questions, check the genweb archives for Bucks Co, to see what has been submitted. Part of the trick in finding answers to question is to ask them the 'right' place - in this case, Bucks Co questions to Bucks County researchers. I found the following info in Futhey and Cope.. Futhey and Cope say that Joseph Townsend was the son of WM and Mary, of Buckleberry, berkshire, b 11-18-1684, m.. 9-27-1710 to Martha Wooderson b 9-18-1683 dau of Julian and Esther Wooderson. (there is much more on the family - siblings - where they lived - his trade as a weaver)....d 4-9-1766, buried Birmingham. I find it odd, don't you, that 2 Joseph Townsends from Buckleberry, were living in the area...here is the will of the Chester Co Joseph; (I can't find a will for Bucks Co Joseph ). TOWNSEND, JOSEPH. East Bradford.May 18, 1765. September 22, 1766.Provides for wife Martha including plantation whereon I lately dwelt in East Bradford containing about 185 acres and all personal estate during life, she to maintain my son William during her life. After her decease the plantation to son John except 64 acres he paying £12 yearly to my son William. To daughter Mary Woodward and her husband Henry 32 acres of land whereon they now dwell during their lives, after their death to their son Henry. To daughter Hannah Ryant 32 acres of land adjoining the above. To son Joseph deceased estate his bond for £100. Remainder divided. Executors: Wife Martha and son John.Letters to John, the other renouncing.Witnesses: Phineas Eachus, Alexander Forman, David Ferris. Here is the will of another Chester Co Joseph Townsend...1749....TOWNSEND, JOSEPH. East Bradford.December 2, 1749. December 12, 1749. C. 194.Provides for wife Lydia. To son Francis my sawmill in East Bradford with 60 acres of land adjoining when 21. To my other 2 surviving sons, the other part of my plantation containing about 152 acres, son Benjamin to have the dwelling house. To daughter Esther £50 at 18. Also provides for a child yet unborn.
