    1. Paschall Woodward of Chester County and points west
    2. Nadine Holder
    3. The list seems a bit quiet so thought I would ask a question that has bugged me for some time. "In 1850, an Act of Assembly was passed, creating the office of District Attorney and making the officer elective by the people. The first choice of the electors fell upon Paschall Woodward, who acted in that capacity until 1853, when he resigned and removed to the West." Tells of a murder case tried by Paschall in Jan 1851. From Side Lights on the Bench and Bar of Chester County, by Wilmer W. MacElree 1918 Then I find Paschall in the 1850 census in Chester County: 1850 #362 West Chester Chester Co, Pa Paschall Woodward, 25, lawyer, $2500, Pa; Elizabeth J., 22, Pa; Anna Mary Woodward, 17, Pa; Margaret Mills, 19, Pa. They are next door to a girls' school run by Palmer Evans and thus probably the two girls staying with them. Anna Mary is Paschall's sister. Then he did indeed remove to the west and is found in 1860: 1860 New Lenox Will Co Ill 1119 Paschall Woodward, 35, farmer, Pa, 72,000 real estate 20,000 personal property Elizabeth J., 34, Pa; Harry Woodward, 9, Pa; Emma J, 4, Il; John Yertze 60, farm hand, Pa; John Conwell, 30, carppenter, NY; Wm Edwards, 24, farm hand, Pa; James Brenan, 30, farm hand, Ire; Henry Law, 25, farm hand, NY; Angus McFadden, 25, farm hand, Scotland; Charlotte Weston, 56, servant, England; Lydia Cramer, 14, servant, NY My question is how did this guy go from a net worth of $2500 in 1850 to nearly $100,000 in 1860. That is an enormous amount of money in that day and time. A currency comparison site online using comparative cost of living gives the value in 2004 of $100,000 from 1860 as over two million dollars. Paschall is only distantly related to me - second cousin, four times removed and it is mainly prurient curiosity on my part. He descends from William and Eliza Marshall Woodward and I have his family information. Didn't find much on him by Googling and wonder if anyone out there knows his story , i. e. anything about the murder trial and how Paschall may have come into his wealth? Nadine Holder

    1. Jurgen Kuhn
    2. Sandra Ferguson
    3. Known as Jurgen Schneeweiss (snow-white, in German)...or as Jurgen Kuhn, is shown in the monthly account book of Governor PRintz....and, that he came from Germany. Jurgen arrived in New Sweden with Gov Printz in 1643. After the surrender of the colony to the Dutch, he made his residence at Upland. Aug 4, 1668, as Juriaen Keen, he was granted a patent for 3 lots at Upland. The last reference to him alive occurred on 1 March 1687/8 when "Urine keen" conveyed land in Chester town for a Quaker meeting house. Jurgen Keen had 2 sons, Hans and Jonas. His only knows daughter was Anna, who married ca 1668 James Sandelands, of Scottish origins. Jonas Jurgensson Keen, son of Jurgen...his name first appears in public records may 17 1677/8 when he was appointed ensign of the Upland militia....March 12, 1677-8 - acquired 200 acres at Upland from his brother Hans, which he sold the same year. The next and last reference 2 March 1694/5 under the name Jonas Skeen...it was the inventory of his estate. His widow, Katherine Skeen, administered his estate. Of their children, only 3 have been identified - Mans, Goran and Catharine. Hans Jurgensson Keen,2nd son of Jurgen, was a resident of Tacony in 1677-8 when he deeded his upland property to his brother Jonas...he died before 10 Aug, 1684 when his widow was listed in the Wicaco Church. His eldest son, Matthias Keen was married and had started his own family in 1693. Still living at home were 4 children Gertrude, Eric, Jonas and George. S. "hank you, Sandra, for the information about the early Swedes. I have long been fascinated by them. My Swedish ancestor was Joran Kyn, also known as Snowhuit (probably for very blond hair). He was originally said to be Swedish but later found to be recruited from Saxony. He became a member of Governor Printz's Lifeguards and received land in what I think is Chester County. I have long wondered whom he and his immediate descendants married. One of them married the daughter of an early Dutch settler along that part of the Delaware - Hans Hoppman, later Hoffman. I'd be grateful if any of these names appear in the 1683 census of Swedes along the Delaware. I imagine Joran Kyn was dead by that time but perhaps the names of his descendants appear. I think I have their names somewhere but am still interested and would like to find their wives. -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Free Edition. 1. Early names in New Sweden
    2. Sandra Ferguson
    3. All the people mentioned....Morton Mortonson, Peter Peterson, Hance Urine, and Mathias Natsilas, were all enumerated in the 1683 Census of the Swedes on the Delaware.....a wonderful book by Peter Craig ,,,(and, they are all good examples of the name 'problems' that make researching these folks tough.) Hance Urine 'started out life' as Hanss Jurensson and became a resident on the Delaware by 1671 where, as Hance Urine he was shown as a resident of Upland.... Morton Mortonson is a bit easier...this is the not too different from the original Marten Martensson... Mortin was "born in Finland in Sweden" and arrived in New Sweden on the Eagle, in 1645. Peter Petersson was also known as Peter Petersson Stake, who was born in NJ in 1667.... He avoided using the name Stake as a surname and opted instead for the surname of Peterson, his father's patronymic. He was also known as Peter Mansson. I"ve not seen Sven Bond's name spelled Swan, but I seem to remember a Swan VanCulin, so it may well be...Craig gives the original name as Sven Andersson Bonde, which 'morphed' into Sven Bonde......the name later became Boon, and these folks were a the ancestors of Daniel Boon. I've not seen the name Mathias Natsilas spelled this way.... Nilsson is the spelling I've found. He was one of 3 sons of Nils Nilsson, from Fryksdalen, and arrived in 1656 on the Mercurius, with wife and 4 children...NIls Nilsson jr was sometimes called NIls Nilsson Repat, adding yet another name to the list to watch for. In the past there's been a lot posted on these "Swedish" citizens of New Sweden so, if interested, visit the list archives to read about them....reading about this t colony on the Delaware River & its history is fascinating. 3. >"Note: That Calconhook was added to Darby in the year 1686, containing six >settlements, viz. Morton Mortonson, Peter Peterson, Hance Urine, Swan >Boone & Mathias Natsilas." The above Hance URINE was born Hans GEORGEN (two dots above the "o") in Brandenburg, what is now Germany, but at that time it was part of the large Swedish empire. He arrived in PA c 1665. The two "g"s in GEORGEN are the Swedish soft "g"s pronounced as a "y". In 1693 he had a household of 11. The name has come down as URIAN.

    1. BOYERS, Benjamin & Margaret and their children, of Charlestown / William DICKINSON, Frederick GERHART, Edward LAYNE, Benjamin LONGSTETS
    2. Laurie
    3. I've been trying to make sense of some of the information I have, and I've managed to put together what I believe to be the family of Benjamin BOYERS using resources at Chester County Archives. Source: Petition for Division or Valuation of the Real Estate of Benj. Byers dec., 18th January 1785, Inquest awarded, Allowed. ...The Petitions of Jacob Byers Eldest son + heir at law of Benjamin Byers late of Charlestown in the said County dec. Humbly Sheweth That the said Benjamin Byers some time in or about the year of our lord 1783 died Intestate leaving a widow named Margaret and [issue ?] 8 children viz Your Petitioner, Catherine, Barbara now the wife of William Dickinson, Elizabeth who is since dece., Benjamin, John, Samuel, + Isaac to Survive him. ... That the said Intestate was in his lifeime and at the time of his decease Seized and [possessed ?] of a [Message ?] and tract of One hundred and Eighty Acres of land Situate in the Township of Charlestown aforesaid Which your Petitioner is advised belongs to the said Widow + Children according to the act of assembly for the Better Settling Intestates Estates. ..." Source: Decem. 20th 1785, John & Rebecca Boyer's Petition for a Guardian John and Rebecca (who signed her name Rebeka) are named as children of Benjamin Boyers late of Charlestown, are minors over the age of fourteen, and are requesting that Frederick Gerhart be their guardian. Source: Decem. 20th 1785, Jacob Boyers Petition in favour of Saml + Isaac Boyer Children of Benj Boyers late of Charlestown, Edward Layne and Benjamin Longstets ap- Jacob Boyers identifies himself as "of the Township of Charlestown" and names his father as Benjamin Boyers who "died some years aag Intestate". He names Samuel and Isaac Boyers as under fourteen, claims part of this estate belongs to them, and requests a guardian or guardians for them. Where I have words in brackets, that's because I was struggling with reading the writing. What I wonder now is: what sources should I check next? I'm thinking land records from Benjamin Boyers to Margaret and children, but I could use some advise on this one. Also, now that I've a family that makes sense rather than a vague "looking for Benjamin and Samuel and William", I'm hoping this line or the others named will connect with someone on the list. My hope is to pursue this and either prove or disprove that the above Samuel, son of Benjamin, is also father to Benjamin born abt 1805.

    2. I use the Library of Congress frequently and wanted to supplement Sandra's good advice. 1) You will have to get your researcher ID before you may request books so plan accordingly. 2) Sandra's night-before idea is excellent but depends on step #1. 3) They have an excellent web search engine on www.loc.gov - in fact, it's the same index used 'in-house so you should plan ahead. You can use it to compile a book list, print out and bring with you ready to start filling out the forms (for all their automation, this is still a pencil and carbon paper exercise) 4) Don't go to the main reading room but go to the Genealogy and Family History Room. They have thousands of books shelved in this room which can easily fill many days of 'dead' time while you're waiting for them to pull other books for you. I've had many serendipitous discoveries there. 2. Sandra Ferguson
    3. Lately, I"ve been receiving lots of personal requests for this sort of info, and while I'm always glad to help when I can, the main idea of these lists is that there is strength (and more information) in numbers. By asking only one person you are denying yourself the combined knowledge of the other 450+ people on the list.......so, you'd do much better to send your query to everyone rather than limit yourself to just one individual! Sandra According to F&C, Fagg's manor was without a regular pastor from the 1760s through 1781, when John Evans Finley was installed as pastor....he remained in the job till the mid 1790s....so, I wouldn't count on there being much chance of extant records from the 1760s through 1781... I did a quick google and see where the Presbyterian Archives in Philly only have records beginning with 1804....however, elsewhere I saw that the LDS have filmed records - they are listed under New Londonderry Pres. Church 1740-1780, so this may hold what you're looking for. (the earliest online data I found were for marriages, deaths, baptisms from the late 1780+ They seem to start with Rev. Findley)........ There is also a book called Death and Baptism Records, 1781-1793: Fagg's Manor Presbyterian Church, Chester County, PA (but that might be too late for you.) "I wonder if in your research you have come across information about Fagg's Manor Presbyterian Church? I am wonder if there are any existing records from the 1740-1780 period?
