Consideration £15: customary dues. **** Tim R, ***** ----- Original Message ----- From: Becky Bigers Hi, Could you check and see if there were two Mitchell's, Possibly Stephen and Thomas who came to PA between 1600 and 1660? The two Mitchell's I am inquiring about were supposed to be brothers, Scot-Irish. I hope this isn't to much to ask. Thank you so much. Becky biggers Henderson, KY

    2. Hi: Elizabeth Allred Horner's tombstone photo is posted on the Allred Family Organization web site at http://www.allredfamily.com/elizabethallredhorner.htm I can't read much on it but was told by the person who took the photo that it says Elizabeth Horner - no maiden or middle name listed. Her birth and death dates are listed. 1. Richard McAllister aka McAlaster
    2. Mal Humes
    3. Does anyone have any info on Richard McAllister of Chester County, listed below, and specifically with regard to his involvement in early Hanover settlements? I found a letter in an old family home in Lycoming county PA that ties a Hayes family as descendant from him and I can't place a generation or two in between. Curiously the letter was found in the attic of an old Humes home in my family, in an account book from a Gallagher who married a Hayes woman. It's an interesting accounting of Gallagher's life farming from 1876 to 1889 that includes business with other surnames of mine. The letter detailing the McAllister/Dill line is especially curious as Mary Dill was a daughter of Capt. Matthew Dill, another descendant of mine and finding this in a Humes attic a few hundred miles from where the Dills lived is a bit odd. It claims descent from Richard and his Revolutionary service but I can't make out the next generation or two. Name: Richard McAllister aka McAlaster Birth: 1725 in Chester Co., PA Death: 7 SEP 1795 in Hanover, PA Supposedly founded Hanover, PA Colonel, PA Militia Father: Archibald McAllister Mother: Jean McClure Marriage 1 Mary Dill b: 1728 in Monaghan Co., Ireland

    1. Biography
    2. George
    3. Joseph M. Truman, when young, attended the school of Benjamin Cathrall, on Mulberry (now Arch) Street, which prepared him for early entering his father's shop to learn tin-plate working; and being of an enquiring mind and having a good memory, he read considerably in scientific and mechanical works, and was well versed in Chaptall's chemistry. Soon after reaching his majority he joined the Harmony Fire Co., and for some years was quite active; being at his death the senior honorary member. In 1816 he planned an engine which the company ordered built by Perkins & Jones at a cost of $900, and when the company became members of the Fire Association, in 1820, Joseph Truman and Benjamin C. Parvin were chosen delegates. He took an active interest in other bodies; was one of the earliest members of the Franklin Institute, and in 1818 united with the Pennsylvania Abolition Society, in which his grandfather, Joseph Moore, had been so useful. When the more modern movement of Wm. Ll! oyd Garrison was started he engaged in it with much earnestness; was president of one of the societies about 1834 and his wife was one of the original members of the Female Anti-Slavery Society. He was chosen a manager of the Pennsylvania Hall when its erection was decided upon, and so continued till its affairs were settled--it having been burned by a pro-slavery mob. Although a great admirer of Henry Clay's financial policy, yet in 1844 he found he could not support him--a slaveholder, and therefore voted for Birney and Morris, and continued on the side of freedom till his death. He as well as others of the family had an inventive talent He originated a peculiar shaped nail, extensively used by tin-plate workers, and in 1831 took out a patent for leaded tin for roofing purposes, but directly after it was announced British manufacturers shipped leaded sheets at a greatly reduced price. He and his brother George, who had become his partner, patented a lamp, the original of the solar lamp, which had a very extensive sale about 1840-50. They being also associated in the expressing and refining of oils and lard, experimented on cotton seed, producing an oil sweet and nice as olive oil, and had it on exhibition at the Franklin Institute's exhibit; about which time the Free Trade convention met in Philadelphia, and Chief Justice Marshall and other southerners attending were elated over the discovery, and it was quickly heralded through the South. A company was projected in Camden, N. J., and a lawyer named Foxall dispatched to make arrangements for a supply of the seed, but his report was that while hitherto the seed had been considered a nuisance it could not now be purchased at any reasonable price for manufacturing. One of the bottles of oil was stolen from the exhibition and deposited in the Patent Office, evidently to prevent the issuance of a patent. Numerous inquiries were made as to the process of manufacture, but as no comp! ensation was offered the secret was not divulged. Joseph M Truman served as a member of the Guardians of the Poor, the board having charge of the almshouse as well as the out-door relief. When residing in Spring Garden he was elected by the Whig party to fill an unexpired term in its board of commissioners.

    1. Biography
    2. George
    3. GEORGE SHAW, father of Sarah Truman, was a Scotchman, born at Craigtoun, near Glasgow, parish of Down, Scotland. His father, Alexander Shaw, was a blacksmith, and is said to have worked in the shop where Watts' engine was built. George Shaw was a cabinet-maker and came to America about the beginning of the Revolution, and at the battle of Germantown so exposed himself in cooperating with the Americans as to impair his health and eventually cause his death from consumption. He was a strict Presbyterian, and while thinking Friends were a good moral people, did not hesitate to say their salvation was impossible; nevertheless, on his death bed was so far convinced as to consent to his widow going.among Friends if she so desired. After the Revolution he sent for his brothers and sisters, whose descendants are numerous in Western Pennsylvania. His wife, Mary Toplin, was the daughter of David Toplin, who with his family emigrated from Germany and settled in Virginia, and his mill bei! ng swept away by a freshet, they came to Philadelphia, where he and his wife died soon after, leaving very little means. Mary TopIin found a home in the family of Isaac and Sarah Parrish, and became very much attached to them. The health of the wife being somewhat impaired after the birth of her son Joseph (who became an eminent physician) he was placed with Mary Shaw to nurse, along with her own first-born.

    3. Janney was an old Quaker name. You might try searching the Digital Quaker archives at http://dqc.esr.earlham.edu Also, Davis's History of Buck's County: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/pa/bucksp/davistoc.htm And try: http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi and enter Janney as a surname and died in PA and you'll find 309 Janney references in many family trees. Try entering Isaac Janney, subject of a previous post of yours found in the archives, >Searching for a name of the wife of Isaac Janney. And you'll find a wives named Sarah Bishop, Martha Radford, Hannah Jones, Mary Underwood and Elsie Griffith to name a few, which is a good illustration of why date, location and parents or children are always helpful for any query. To search the Old Chester List archives with having to search each year's posts try a Google search for: janney PA-OLD-CHESTER That will find 33 old posts. Some of those reference Falls Meeting, and offhand I know someone has been posting some old book(s) on that Quaker meeting recently at: http://www.quakerrecords.com/ & http://www.quakerrecords.com/databases/falls_historical_notes/pg001.htm The above is a great site that keeps growing rapidly with many books on Quaker meetings in the Mid-Atlantic area added within the last year.

    3. With this sort of blanket request you're asking people for untold info , and to type in all sorts of data that you may already have. For instance, I glanced at the will CD and there are many Janney mentions, way too many to include without knowing who you might be interested in and those you may already have. I suggest you first visit the list archives and, using the search subject Janney, see what has been posted in the past....there are many entries, I know...I remember a good many I posted myself. So, please post a little bio on who you're interested in (after you've checked through the archives)... when and where they lived, and what you hope to find...then, perhaps we can be of without having to 'reinvent the wheel'. 3. Neither Solomon or Jeremiah appear in THE HISTORY OF CHESTER COUNTY PA, by Futhey and Cope, nor do they appear in any area wills, in any way....there are no Allred/Alreds mentioned at all...there are, of course, Yorks, but no Jeremiah.(I was hoping to find them in the wills of parents, but no luck) I checked the marriage certificates from New Garden MM 1704-1799, hoping that Elizabeth had attended the ceremonies of others, with perhaps her parents...but there are NO Yorks included at any New Garden marriages 1704-1799. (I found another possible spelling while looking through NC MM records.....Aldred....so, keep that in mind, too. With this new spelling I rechecked the wills, etc...but, no luck. Sandra "Solomon Allred and Jeremiah York both appear on the 1724 and 1730 tax lists for Chester County, PA. Later, both men show up in North Carolina land records in the 1750's. I am very interested in any information on these two men along with Elizabeth York who "married out of unity" per the New Garden MM records for 1727." -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Here below is info about land bought on the Jersey side by one John GILBERT, in 1699. He bought a piece of land in 1699 and sold it in 1702. "Falls of Delaware" is about where Trenton is now. I do not know which John Gilbert this was. There may be more later on the NJ-List about the Egg Harbor purchase; we're still transcribing NJ deeds. That is, David Tourison is transcribing and I am assisting by proofreading & putting the surnames into capital letters. But here is what there is so far for one John GILBERT: [West Jersey Records, Liber B, Part 2. Page 709]: 1699 Oct. 14. Deed. The West Jersey Society, by their agent Thomas REVELL, to John GILBERT of Burlington, weaver, for 200 acres of the Society's 30,000 a. tract above the Falls of Delaware. 1701-2 Feb. 16. Do. John GILBERT (as above) to Nicholas MARTINEAU of Burlington, joiner, for the preceding 200 acres, on the Southside of Stony Brook, adjoining Jonathan DAVIS. Hope this helps somehow, Liz J

    3. from a lookup in THE WELCOME CLAIMANTS PROVED, DISPROVED AND DOUBTFUL....by, the Welcome Society. John Gilbert was said to have been aboard the Welcome in early published works (mid 1800s to early 1900s), but there is no proof of his having been a passenger. Apparently the descendants of John Gilbert are of the opinion that John came as early as 1679. ( but the book doesn't give their documentation for believing this)...also, another area John Gilbert Sr, from of Bucks Co, bought 100 acres at Great Egg Harbor, NJ, in 1695, and his will, of 1711 calls him a Philadelphia merchant. -- No virus found in this outgoing message. 2. Dutton Family
    3. Hi Sandra - Thank you for looking this up for me, I don't know where my Cousin Alice got this information abt. GEORGE and CHARLES TATE, but she has sent me a descendency going back to a deWASHINGTON in England, just names and dates..... and I did find a lot from Quaker Records but it was mostly WILLIAM TATE, and of course my PAINTER.... I have wondered abt. CHARLES TATE, and how and when he emigrated, it appears he was b. in England abt. 1670ish and emigrated 1682, so he would have been quite young to have come alone, I have wondered if he came with another family, being still a child ? I asked Alice and was never answered abt. this..... and other than the marriage to KATHARINE MALIN in 1721, there seems to be no records for GEORGE TATE... but they apparently lived in Mill Creek Hundred because WILLIAM TATE their son b. 1732 has Records being there, in the Quaker Records....... I wonder where and when KATHARINE MALIN TATE died ? ( the mother of WILLIAM )... maybe that would be a clue....... I just don't know...... thanks again, Sally ----- Original Message ----- From: "Sandra Ferguson" <ferg@ntelos.net> To: "Dutton Family" <rdutton1@tampabay.rr.com> Cc: <pa-old-chester-l@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, July 24, 2006 3:54 PM Subject: Tate > There is no mention of a Geo Tate in any of the early tax/landowner > records I have, and no mention of the name in Futhey and Cope (they > mention a ?
