    1. [PaOldC] Jansen/Johanssen/DeVoss, etc
    2. Sandra Ferguson
    3. In 1693, there was an inhabitant of New Sweden whose name was Matts DeVoss, who had been born in Sweden and was still living in '93. According to THE 1693 CENSUS OF SWEDES ON THE DELAWARE, by Craig, Devoss/DeVos/DeFoss were other names for Johansson, which also was Jansen. This earlier Matthias Mattsson de Foss was a blacksmith who arrived in New Sweden with his brother Anders Mattsson in 1754....there was also another Matthias Mattsson in the colony, so tracing each Matthias is difficult. . I checked the CD of wills and there are no Jansen/Jansan/JansonJamsen wills recorded in Chester Co, and no mentions of the surname in the wills of others. The will for Claus Jamsen is as follows.....Phil Co. JAMSEN, CLAUS. Germantown.Executor: Son Claus, sole heir.Witnesses: January Dooden, Dirck Jansen and Francis Daniel Pastorius. (There is no date given, but it is found between 2 1711 will probates and is definitely pre 1726.) Sandra -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Free Edition. 3. On http://www.findagrave.com there are three possibilities: Carter Cemetery in Chester (map shows location) Chester Rural Cemetery in Chester(map shows location) Chester Friends Cemetery(no map) I know of at least one old cemetery located next to an office where my husband worked in the 1950's that was relocated due to building. It was on the main business street but I don't have any names.I think there are most likely others that were relocated due to the building boom in the business area. Anyway ordinarily I would go there to search but Chester is an area to avoid these days even with a university there-crime all around the town.I'll ask my husband if he can think of anything else. 3. I've had a question from someone concerning an ancestor of his who was captured/wounded at Cashtown Gap, near Gettysburg, somehow was taken to hospital in Chester, died there in August of 1863 and was buried. This Confederate soldier is said to have been buried in the "Chester Cemetery''.....so my questions are directed to locals (and, you know who you are!). Where were wounded Confederate soldiers treated in Aug of '63, and where would they have been buried locally? Sandra -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Free Edition. 2. Sandra Ferguson
    3. Someone just sent me a tidbit on a passenger on the Endeavor, arriving in 1683. She says that Thomas Pierson (who came with his wife Margaret and brother John and Mary Smith his sister) was from Pownall Fee, Cheshire, England. She says that this is not her own research but from someone else....but, hopes this tid bit might be helpful to someone researching the line. Elsewhere I saw that Thomas Pearson was born in 1653, in Pownall Fee, the son of Robert and Mary Janney Pierson....(there seems to be a good deal of internet info on these folks.) 3. According to Dr Craig, John Archer had a brother, Anders Grelsson Mink, a resident of Crane Hook. He was born in Sweden, the son of Johan Grelsson alias Cornelis. Anders came to New Sweden as a young boy, with his family on the Mercurius, in 1656. As an adult he was first known as Anders Johnsson. After the death of his father and the remarriage of his mother, Helena, to Marten Martensson, Anders left Ammansland and settled at Crane Hook where he paid a head tax in 1693. As eldest son and heir of Johan Grelsson, Anders "late of Amosland" conveyed 137 acres of his father's land to his brother John Archer. Johan Grelsson, also known as John Cornelis, was a Finn from Fryksdalen, Varmland, who arrived in New Sweden with is wife Helena and 3 children, on the Mercurius in 1657. He shared a large tract at Ammansland with Marten Martensson sr, who married Johan's widow after his death c. 1684. John and Helena had 3 know2n sons; Anders Johnsson Grelsson Mink, Arien Johnsson, later known as John Archer and Eric Johnsson who was insane. ----- -- No virus found in this outgoing message. 1. Re: [PA-OLD-CHESTER] * RE: CARLE / CARREL
    2. Eric Olson
    3. Sandra, Thank you, again, for looking up the Wills and passenger lists, etc. Any "normal" person who might read these last several exchanges might conclude my search for Philip Carrel may be futile, and not worth pursuing further. It is possible that NO records still exist in PA for this family. I don't believe it. They are still hidden in some courthouse attic or church basement awaiting discovery. Like the "Energizer Bunny" I never quit. So much has not been transcribed or scanned yet. One example: In the Jefferson Co. OH deed books there is no record of Philip Carrel ever owning, paying taxes, or appearing on any documents related to land ownership. YET, in 2001, during a personal visit to the courthouse, aunt Joann Carroll was making Xerox copies of other Carroll deeds from the books. Several months later, back in Michigan, she discovered quite by accident she had made a copy of a page containing the name Philip Carrel on the bottom three lines. A partial record of some land transfer. She sent for a copy of the next page, and there was a complete record of a sale of some land by Philip Carrel and his wife Mary to another gentleman, dated May 1812. That entry still remains un-indexed, and except by a great good fortune, we never would have found it. It confirmed that our man was indeed in that county at that time. So I don't trust CDs or Indexes as being complete. That was a great lesson for me, and it should be for any serious genealogist. There is always more to be found. 1. [PA-OLD-CHESTER] Searching for CARLE / CARREL family, from Germany, late 1700s in S.E. PA
    2. Eric Olson
    3. Hello the List... Philip CARLE / CARREL and his wife Mary [unk] are said to be born in Germany, by several of their children in the 1880 census. These are Margaret born 20 August 1802 in Lancaster County, and Catherine born 29 August 1807 in Cumberland. Other children were John b. 1798, Mary b. 1801, Joseph b. 1804, Anthony b.1806, Henry, Jane and Philip Jr. Philip died in 1813 during the War of 1812, from Jefferson County, OH by then, and all his heirs are named in 1818 court documents in Steubenville, which are the 9 children and his widow Mary. Probate records of his estate are lost. He left no Will, and Mary declined to act as administrator. Apparently she could neither read nor write, and made her "X" when needed. The purpose of the 1818 court proceedings was to appoint a legal guardian for the minor children. The legal guardian James Tarrance made application under the Act of April 1816 for Bounty Land (granted - BL #715, which was in southern Illinois), and then relinquished it in return for 5-years military half-pay for the heirs. Unfortunately that application is lost or miss-filed at NARA. A mis-filed document at NARA might as well not exist at all. I do have his military records from NARA both from Pennsylvania Militia in 1812, and Regular Army in 1813. I am searching for ANY family information for Philip Carle / Carrel in pre-War of 1812 Pennsylvania. I have found a Jacob and John Carrel traveling together on the ship Patience, Rotterdam to Philadelphia in, 1748. Jacob is 40 and John is 17, probably father and son. Women were not listed. Jacob and John took their oaths in Philadelphia and those records spell with a "K" - Karle and Karrel. I can find no further trace of them. And lastly there is a Philip Carrel advertised as a run-away servant, a German, in Lancaster Co, placed by a John Eigener of Lancaster Co. in a 1761 Philadelphia newspaper. I can't tie him in. My ancestor Philip Carle / Carrel was probably born about 1775, and began raising a family in PA in 1798 when first child was born. Aside from the above, their is no census record, tax record, marriage or birth records, etc. that I have been able to find. Am I missing something? I am at a loss to know how to proceed. I would think there should at least be birth records for these nine children... Thank you, Eric Olson Eric Olson ericbear01@earthlink.net Eight nickels makes 2 paradigms.

    3. The name John Hoskins appear on land holders list of 1689, and in 1715, when it is included on the Chester twp tax list. The name appears many times in the Chester Co court records (90+) between 1697 and 1710. here are a few, abridged, below. David Lloyd acknowledged a deed to John Hodgskins...47 foot land fronting to the street that leads along the greene..& 20 acres land lying in the woods....13rh day 10m 1693. appointed appraiser for the court....1698 served on many juries and did many estate apprasials for the court. John Hoskins and his mother Mary Hoskins and Chatrles Whitaker acknowledge a deed to Jos. Richards Sr for a lot of land lying in Chester Town the deed bearing date 20th Dec 1699. ( John Sr was dead by this date, but I can't find a will for him....under any spelling...send me the spelling, will you? I'm curious.) ... Helped lay out a road from the west side of Chester creek where the ferry is . 1699 As John the SR died before 1699, all mentions of the name after that date are John, Jr....before that date I'm not sure how you can tell which is which.... HOSKINS, JOHN. .January 1, 1716. Adm. to Ruth Hoskins. 1. Re: [PA-OLD-CHESTER] Hoskins
    2. James Hoskins
    3. Sandra: Thank you for taking time to help on this... it has been very problematic indeed and you are assisting several of us that are all working on the same main problem some of the researchers working with me have worked on this a great many years. We have quite a bit of info on John I who came from Frodsham/Cheshire England 1682/1682. He did leave a will and had a large estate for the time. He signed it Hodgkinson although the exuctors corrected it later to Hoskins. His son was John II and was Sheriff of Chester but he died at a fairly young age as you note. We have seen the Orphan Court record to which you refer I believe. John III is the one in question and the one that causes so many problems some early genealogies are incorrect and there is much heresay about the whole matter so we are trying to nail this down once and for all. We have a document where John III petitioned the court trying to get his share of the estate but it seems he wasn't lucky ... also his brother Stephen did the same thing. Their brother Joseph is the fellow who was a judge there and set up the first school from his will. We know much about the rest of the family except for John III and this is the fellow who tradition and some reseach has as our ancestor. We have one fellow who has taken time to look through all the tax lists but John III doesn't seem to be around. In the petition to the court he stated he was sickly in 1730 but his brother Joseph leaves him his clothing in his will at a much later date 1770s. Other documents point to John III dying in 1780. He is suspected to have had many wives and several children one of his wives seems to have been a widow by the name of Eleanor Arthur the widow of Charles Arthur... we know this because of documents where they were already married and the estate hadn't even been settled... they owed Nathan Evans money because of her deceased husband's estate. We are hoping to find something that shows John III was exempted from paying taxes either b/c he was poor or unhealthy or something of that nature. 1. [PA-OLD-CHESTER] Andrew Holmes - was RE: Robert Graham m Rachel Mills c 1790
    2. Mal Humes
    3. Does anyone have anything on Andrew Holmes cited in the will below? I've been looking for an Andrew Hume that had a land warrant in Hanover Twp, Lancaster County circa 1737. That's the only reference I found to him and it looks like John Hume completed the survey and got the property a few years later. This will looks like an interesting lead, especially with some Grahams settled in Hanover Twp attending the same church, Old Hanover Presbyterian, that I find the Hume family at in the latter half of the 18th century. There are other potential Hume/Graham connections in the area prior to that. There was a John Hume who was an indentured servant of Andrew Hamilton in NJ in 1680's before that Andrew Hamilton became Lt. Gov of PA in 1701. That John Hume was dead by 1690's but had owned property adjacent to Lewis Morris, a future Gov. of NJ who was married to a daughter of James Graham of NY who had witnessed Penn's arrival at New Castle. I've also been looking at the Rev. Holmes family that immigrate to Boston with a Rev. Craighead. Craighead moved to PA to service churches there and it seems plausible some of the Holmes followed. There was also a Holmes family in VA from Jamestown on and a Hume line in VA from early 18th century. -----Original Message----- Here is an abstract for William Graham's will in 1761. He mentions his brother, Robert Graham. Maybe he's yours. Prove date is 27 Apr 1761 William Graham. 18 Feb 1761. Wife Anne. Dau. Jean, plantation upon Bonney Brook, where the Riggs now live. Granddau.: Anne Graham, a minor. Bro. Thomas Graham. Bro. Robert. Exs., wife and Andrew Holmes. Book and page is A, 84.

    3. There are two Baptist churches that apparently saw a lot of Quakers join after the Keithian Separatist schism in late 1600s and early 1700s. Great Valley is one of those and I know that a lot of Welsh Quakers ended up there. I forget the other one offhand but I think it was mentioned in some posts I made on the Keithians here and on the Quaker Roots list and on the web page I cited the info from. I believe there is also a list of early churches on Sandra's PA-Roots Chester site. And there is some info on early Presbyterian churches in some pages I host at www.mal.net/EarlyPresbyterians/. -----Original Message----- From: James Hoskins Is there a timeline anywhere of what churches were in Chester in the early 1700s? I find that some of my quakers are missing and need to locate them.
