Excellent resource! Thank you, Mal! JFBailey www.baileywick.com -----Original Message----- From: pa-old-chester-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:pa-old-chester-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Mal Humes Sent: 22 September, 2006 23:05 To: PA-OLD-CHESTER-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [PaOldC] Where to find Quaker Monthly Meeting records? Regarding the Bailys, I also receommend searching the Digital Quaker collection at http://esr.earlham.edu/dqc/ for records of early Quaker Bayleys who were imprisoned and persecuted and other connections to the PA lines. I recently found that Baylis is said to be another variation on the Baillie, Baily, Bailey, Bayley name. I believe there are also some connections to the Chester County Baily/Bayley lines from some of the early VA lines of the Jordan family in Nanosemond and Isle of Wight County, VA where there are some Baily marriages. Re: http://www.quakermeetings.com/ >QuakerMeeting.com >"Monthly Meetings in North America: A Quaker Index." >It has a""Copyright C 1992 - 2004 Thomas C. Hill. All rights reserved." The site is currently down but should be back online soon. It should be the definitive source of where to find records for various historical Quaker meetings. Tom is still active on the Quaker Roots mailing list on Rootsweb and adding revisions to the site since his last book was published, and his research is quite a valuable reference. Keep in mind he does Quaker research not people research. People sometimes overlook this and email him questions about people. A recent note from him offered an example of use on the site: "As always, I know nothing about individuals, only monthly meetings and their records. My web site is down just now, but when it returns, go to <www.QuakerMeetings.com> and click on the search tab. If you input "Loudoun" in the County box and "Virg" in the State box, the result will show you every monthly meeting of Friends whose last known meeting place was in Loudoun County, Virginia. (Of course, this is a computer, so if you input "Loudon" county, you will learn only about the Tennessee county that spells its name with a single "u".)" The last time I looked there was some info there that I found confusing regarding Radnor Meeting, which I know has connections to a lot of Welsh tract families of Chester related folk. The dates listed there for Radnor cite what I think is the historical Radnor Meeting House that dates back to at least early 1700's. But in the listings the dates reflect 1950's dates when citing this meeting. This is related to the Hicksite split and there's some confusing history with Haverford and Radnor where apparently Haverford was known as Radnor at some points in time. I wanted to mention this because of the possibility over confusion resulting from records that could be cited as Radnor but found in Haverford records, and because I found the dates on the web site for Radnor confusing when I knew the meeting house had a much older history than it appears from the database info. Also, I know that many records of North Carolina Quakers are kept at Guilford College which is about 12 miles from me. I've been meaning to get there and get familiar with their resources and to try to sort out some Jordan family questions I have. There are quite a few connections between New Garden and Kennett PA Meetings and the New Garden Meeting in North Carolina and related families such as Mendenhall. I don't want to make any promises, but if anyone has records they want to research in the NC archives I may be able to assist. Hi Chester Co MM records abstracts are in the "unpublished" __Hinshaw Index to Quaker Meeting Records__ at Swarthmore. It has been filmed by LDS #0175,412 etc. in the series. This group of records HAS also been published in 1990 by Selby Publishing and Printing, 3405 Zartman Rd, Kokomo,IN. Surely they have a website by now. Hope this helps. I found the Monthly Meeting (MM) records that were of interest to me were fragmentary at Family Search and at Salt Lake City Family History Library. Most consisted of births, marriages and deaths. Few had records of movement of membership changes from one MM to another and none had any information of business transactions, such as appointing ministers or papers for traveling ministers. I have visited Haverford Library but don't think I asked directly if they had complete monthly meeting records. Have not been to Swarthmore but have read they do have orig9inal records but don't know if they will let lowly genealogists or family historians will look at them I also wonder if their microfilm or microfiche copies are more complete than the FHS. I am particularly interested in several Iowa MM and plan someday to contact Iowa Yearly Meeting to inquire about what records they might have. Unfortunately, as with most things there is no giant book that contains all of anything, whether it be Rev. War Vets or MM records (wouldn't it be wonderful if there were?).....so, you'll have to search for EACH MM you're interested in. ....there was no Newlin MM, and for a listing of all Chester MMs, and their dates of inception, visit the Chester Co site and look under Quaker Info. You might want to check the lookup list and see what Quaker meeting lookups are offered, also located on the Chester site. You could also do a place search on the LDS online site....using Chester County Pa as your search subject. This will give you a list of EVERYTHING they have available on film....this includes many MM records. According to DESCENDANTS OF JOEL BAILY, by Gilbert Cope, (just a bit on each generation, in case you already have it all) Joel Baily and Ann Short (original emigrants) m 1687 Kennett mm Josiah Baily and Sarah Marsh , 1732-3 Sadsbury Joel Baily and Hannah Wickersham, m 1757 Gravenor Baily , son of Joel and Hannah Wickersham Baiy, took a certificate from New Garden to Concord, as an apprentice, in 1778, and brought one back in 1780. In 1780 he moved to Kennet, and in 1784, to Warrington, York Co. If Gravenor DID serve in the Military, he would have been disowned for that action and no longer considered a Friend or member of any MM before he married a non-Quaker.) So, if he remained a member of any MM till his marriage, I would discount the lore that he fought in the war. Sandra Where does one find these records from the Quaker Monthly Meetings? My source of info about the Ballinger family was from the book "Hilley Cousins: The Descendants of Thomas Hilley, Rev. Soldier, and His Wife Mary Walker Bond", 2 vols. with supplements, pub. 2002, compiled by Ann Clark Holloman and Nancy Brown Guest, a copy of which is on file at the Chester Co. Historical Society in West Chester. Book contains info on thousands of descendants of George Eavenson (1782-1843) and wife Mary Hilley, George having come to Elbert Co., GA from Chester Co., PA with his parents Eli Eavenson and Rachel Seal ca 1790. Book also contains info on Chester Co. ancestors of Eli and Rachel including Eavenson, Woodward, George, Williamson, Malin, Seal, Temple, Taylor, Gilpin, Haines and Smith. Info on the Ballinger-Harding ancestors of George W. Bush can be viewed at http://www.wargs.com/political/bush.html under his 8th Great grandparents, numbers 2000 and 2001, Henry Ballinger and Mary Harding, and his 9th Great grandparents, numbers 4002 and 4003, Thomas Harding and Eleanor. Chandler Eavenson Sautee-Nacoochee, GA In regard to your inquiry about Henry Ballinger (1660-1727) who came to America in 1678 on The Kent, I am a descendant and the info I have is that his Will was dated 8 Mar 1727, proved 10 Apr 1733, recorded in Burlington Co., NJ, Will Book 3, page 285. He was married to Mary Harding on 4 Sep 1684 in Burlington, NJ. She was the daughter of Thomas Harding and Eleanor Bagwell who were married 26 Feb 1662 at All Hallows, London Wall. Thomas Harding's Will named "Mary, wife of Henry Ballinger" and was dated 8 Feb 1707/8, recorded in Burlington Co., NJ, Book 1, page 220, proved 6 Dec 1708. These people are also ancestors of President George W. Bush. Dear all, Thanks to some emails off the list, Sandra has pointed me in a few directions looking at the various Jansens (+ various spellings) and showing that there were several Claus Jansens. According to PA German books on the Claus Jansen of Skippack (wd. 1739, wp. 1745) was born in Mu(e)lheim in 1658. It has been raised by more than one people that he was probably too old to have all those children during his second marriage to Catherine Conrad. So in effect, I have thrown out the date of 1658 as unverifiable in favour to Sandra's date that Claus Jansen of Bucks Co. (a Swede who will was probated 1723). By unverifiable I mean that that date shows up in a variety of books, but no primary source (so far) Do anyone have a *verifiable* date on "Swede" Claus of Bucks Co being born in 1658? Maybe the ages are given in the 1693 census for the Swedes. Unfortunately I don't have access to it as I now live in South Africa. I think it is much more likely that someone confused the two men by the same name who lived very much in the same area. Michel PS, I am new to this list.
