The name Edward Jennings appears on the Concord Township tax list for 1693. From roughly 1718-1740 the name William Dodd appears multiple times in the Concord, Thornbury, and Kennett area tax lists. We are trying to find other incidences of the Jennings surname in proximity to William Dodd. Does anyone know more about this Edward Jennings of the 1693 tax list or any other Chester, PA, area Jennings? Anne Crocker Concord, NC
Do you know what township they lived in? Where they were taxed? That might be a help - with such a common name as John Williamson, some hints would be good. I thought perhaps I could find John in the will of a parent, guessing before 1830, but there are a TON of John Williamsons mentioned in various ways in area wills...Bucks, Chester, Del Co, etc. This has a lot of the names you're interested in...Del. What an unusual name....I've not run into it before and I figure there are several alternate spellings...it's always helpful if you'll include them (so they may be also looked up, rather than expecting the volunteer to come up with other spellings). If he is from Cos. Antrium or Down, there's a better than average chance that he was a Scots Irish emigrant, not one of Irish descent, so Presbyterianiam would be a good bet for his religion, and is an avenue to be explored. I looked on the CD of area wills...which includes Bucks, Berks, Chester, Lanc, Cumberland, Mont, Phil, Delaware Cos....and I've encluded, below, the only will in that name in any of these counties, up to about 1830 or so; I did see that there was a John mentioned in a 1747 Warrington twp, Bucks Co will (witness only); and a Samuel of Moreland, Bucks Co, mentioned in 1775 and 1789... There is no mention of the surname in THE HISTORY OF CHESTER COUNTY PA, by Furhey and Cope, and not included in the 1765 Chester Archives. Thomas Gourley b. 1752, Belfast, Antrim, IRE., came from Ireland supposedly in 1768 to PA. He married Martha McNeely about 1772 in Scranton, Wackawanna Co., PA. Martha was supposedly born in Lancaster, PA. about 1752. Thomas was a Ranger in Western Maryland, and was promoted a Captain of Co., A 9th PA Rifle Regiment. on March 3, 1777. According to Tax records from 1777-1780 he was in Cumberland Township, York County, PA. I have alot of information on his military services, but, hardly any on his personal life. Any information that I can use to further my research on Thomas' father and mother would be great. Thomas' father may have been a John Gourley. He also had brother's Hugh, and John. I went to the Harrisburg, York, and Cumberland County Archives last summer. I did find some tax records in York County. No land records, deeds, were found. Great List!! Hope someone has some records, books, etc., or knowledge of the Gourley family that can help me. Thank You, Gloria Knight Texas
from a lookup in 1765 Chester co archives; There are 4 Wm Moores included; one owned 266 acres in Sadsbury one owned 200 acres in West Caln one owned 270 acres in Marple one (who had esq after his name) owned 662 acres in Charlestown. (on a personal note, I'd like to ask anyone on the list who has had any experience researching in County Down, Ireland, to drop me an email [email protected] we've just discovered thru naturalization papers, that 'our' George Baxter was naturalized in York Co, 1802, and had arrived in 1786. He was a young man and we don't know if he came as a child with parents, or a young adult....my 'cousin' and I have never attempted Irish research before, so any pointers or tips would be more than welcome. We're sure he was not an Irishman, as he practiced Seceder Presbyterianism here, and thus may well have been of Scots Irish origin.) (while I'm in an asking mood, I'd love to hear from anyone who has a personal blackberry...my husband is 'threatening' to get me one and I'd like to hear what any of YOU have to say about yours) S.

Joan, Was your Mrs. William Roan living at the corner of 4th and Morton Sts. in 1885? OR you could post at Rootsweb's PA census list, which covers ALL of the censuses (with images) and has TONS of volunteers! go to [email protected] for any census info. unfortunately, due to the new software, you must sign up in order to post OR you can just ask me (I am list admin) - email any census questions to [email protected] - I will be glad to look up census info for you. First US census was 1790. 1790-1840 unfortunately only lists head of household and then the number/sex of dependents; 1850 is the first census that lists the name of each person in the household. If you need to search prior to 1850, best way to begin is WITH 1850 and then work backwards. Give surname, year, and county in the subject line for best results. When I googled: ["eleanor smith" "george stevenson"], the fourth result was a Google Books result: 'Proceedings' by Delaware County historical society. page 212: "Children of William Smith and Margaret Frame: Eleanor Smith m. George Stevenson, who died about 1863; a son of John and Judith (Dutton) Stevenson. They are reported to have had three children, to wit: Smith, Edwin, now of Chester, and a daughter, who m. William Roan, also of Chester, Pa." Let me know if you have trouble finding this. It seems that this could be the person you are looking for...Eleanor Smith, whose mother's maiden name was Frame. If you go back to the previous page, it says that Margaret Frame (her mother) was born in 1781. That would make her 38 at the time of Eleanor's birth. The one part that doesn't match up is that these people appear to be in Chester or Delaware Co, PA, not Indiana. Also, it lists George and Eleanor Sevenson's children as Smith, Edwin, and a daugher who married William Roan. Is your descendent Smith Stevenson, Edwin Stevenson or Mrs. William Roan? Good luck. -Aimee Matlack Heinly ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Cc: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, March 24, 2009 8:46 PM Subject: [PaOldC] Stevenson/Smith Marriage 1835 >I am trying to determine the maiden name of my great great grandmother. I am trying to determine the maiden name of my great great grandmother. We have conflicting information that her maiden name was either Smith or Fraim. Eleanor (either Smith or Fraim/Frame) was married to George W. Stevenson on 26 April 1835 in Upper Chichester, PA. They were married in the home of Mr. William McCay, by Rev. J. Walker. I am trying to find out any information that I can about Eleanor, her parents, etc. According to the cemetery where she is buried in Columbus, IN, she was born in Indiana on 05 January 1819 and she died in Columbus on 03 July 1846. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Joan **************A Good Credit Score is 700 or Above. See yours in just 2 easy steps!
