I'm sure all of you have used the genforum http://genforum.genealogy.com/ to search for 'cousins' researching in the same areas or of the same surnames, but here's one of their forums I was unfamiliar with, and that looks promising....it the Record Lookup forum....and you post your 'wants' from extant records and, hopefully, someone will read it, have that document, and answer your question....worth a try, anyway. (I asked a 1820 Belmont/Monroe Co, Ohio 1820 census question yesterday, and got an answer today) Sandra http://genforum.genealogy.com/recordlookups/index.html#47876

Jr. there are many more wills at USGenWeb that reference the children in the above will Your Townsend married an Eachus. This Eachus bio mentions an Eachus son who married a Townsend daughter. EACHUS, Robert, was a resident in Goshen as early as 1715. He became the owner of 400 acres of land in or near what is now the northeast quarter of West Chester, which by his will passed to his sons John and William. He died in 1727, leaving a widow, Elizabeth, daughter of Hugh and Elizabeth (Brinton) Harry, who married again, 1,13,1728/9, at Goshen meeting, John Gleave, of Springfield and died in Marlborough, 3,8,1758; buried at Kennet. The children of Robert and Elizabeth were,--1. John, m. 9,22,1734, to Hannah, daughter of Isaac Haines, of Goshen. He died Jan. 19, 1779. 2. William, m. 3,25,1749 to Sarah Peirce of Goshen, widow. Probably left no children. 3. Robert, m. Mary ___, and had children,--Mary, William, and Robert. 4. Enoch, m. Esther Evans, and had children,--Sarah, William, Elizabeth, and others. William, m. Rebecca Townsend, and was the father of Townsend Eachus, senior. 5. Daniel visited North Carolina in 1762, returning the next year. 6. Elizabeth, perhaps died unmarried. 7. Ann, m. 2,22,1736, to James Wickersham, of Marlborough. 8. Alice, m. 9,20,1746, to David Ogden, of Springfield. John and Hannah Eachus were the parents of Phinehas Eachus, the first landlord of the Turk's Head Tavern. Phinehas was married, 11,23,1757, at Goshen Meeting, to Sarah Trego, daughter of William and Margaret Trego, of Goshen. The family tradition is that a Masonic lodge held meetings at his house, and that he became responsible for the debts of some of them, which brought about his financial ruin. The sheriff seized his property, and the most of the land passed into the possession of Isaiah Matlack, the tavern being purchased by John Hoopes. He must have had a taste for the classics, as he named two of his sons Virgil and Paris. Virgil Eachus married Bathsheba Webb, and resided for several years in Middletown, Delaware Co. In 1808 he married his second wife, Mary Starr, and after a few years removed to Maryland, but returned about 1825. His children by the first wife were Homer (born 7,15,1792), Joseph, Obed, Hiram, Edna, Betsy, Mahala, Abner, Preston; by the second, Vanleer, Bathsheba, Minshall, Sarah, and Virgil Trego Eachus. -----Original Message----- From: Kim Spangrude [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Friday, April 17, 2009 10:27 PM To: PaOldChester Subject: [PaOldC] Jonathan Townsend born 1816 Chester, PA Jonathan TOWNSEND, b. abt 1781 in PA, m. It's helpful to know HOW you know these fellas to have been born in Chester Co....that is often a clue as to where one should be looking. So, that would be a help to know. Also, as Lancaster just came into being in 1729, anything before that date would be considered to have been in Chester, and included in Chester Records. I have transcribed a ton of land records of one kind or another, and they are all on the Chester site, mentioned in your Welcome Email, and on the pagenweb archives....check those to see what you can find, not forgetting to look for all the spellings of Neill you can think of, including O'Neill and Neal. I've looked in THE HISTORY OF CHESTER COUNTY PA, by Futhey and Cope, and found a few Neills, but nothing specifically... ditto for Callender, any spelling. I looked on the CD of area wills, with no real luck. I'm including one, simply because some of your names of interest are included; (I found nothing for Callender, any spelling....in Lanc Co. Chester, etc) NEILL, WILLIAM. Tredyffrin.March 23, 1819. April 7, 1820.To wife Margaret half of clear estate, real & personal. To my bro. Wits: Jas. Gamble, Edward Davis, Samuel Brown. I found this will from Cumberland Co....I include it because of the names....and that Wm Neil is listed as the son in law of someone named Calender,,,,plus ties to Lancaster Co....I'm sending it along, in case you think it 'might' be whom you seek. Their father is also named William Neill b 4/12/1711 in Clare, County Downs, Ireland, married Sarah Callender (Callendar) in Lancaster Co.PA in 1730. William Neill (father) died in 1769 in Rowan Co. NC. I am looking for information on this line specifically the father of the elder William Neill born in Ireland. I don't know how to go back any farther to Ireland records nor how to find where and when the elder William Neill cane to America."

This is exactly WHY one uses " "....I tried your subject, John Rockwell, without quotes, and got 336,000 hits, which is pretty useless unless you want to spend from now till Christmas checking them all out! Personally, I don't stop at one google, I do many....moving the words around in the subject slot, for different placement brings different results...I might use "John Rockwell" +Pennsylvania "John T. Rockwell" +Chester county Pennsylvania "john Rockwell" +the wife's name +Presbyterian Any different combinations I think of. S. "When searching at Google (or any other Boolean type search), putting quotesaround words tells the search engine to search for that EXACT string, not just in proximity, but exactly. That can be a difficulty when searching a name - for example, if you search for "John H. Rockwell" it will show youonly those results - and not include those that show John Rockwell or J. H.Rockwell - so when you use quotes around a string of letters (or phrase),the results will only show exact matches. Any info supplied after the + helps to narrow, or delineate, the search. Just an FYI."
Ancestry is probably the best place to look (all in one lump sum) for people entering by ship the US. They have the Castle Garden entries and Ellis Island and some other odd places. Philadelphia lists and Boston lists Census to 1930 and the 40 will be out in a few years. SSDI current to within 3 months but not before 1967. I think it sounds like a trip to the library is in your future, pal....there are a good many books out there written just for folks like you, who need very general genealogical info, and direction. When you need to keep in mind is that that there is not a giant book that has all passenger info, and that only a fraction of the original passenger lists are extant, and you'll see that finding a record of an ancestor, actually on a boat, is something that most of us never do....there are many ship records on the Chester site and URLs for others,..... look through those, and you'll also need to just do a lot of google searching, using things like "ships passenger lists" +Pennsylvania, as your subject..this is only an example, but you get the idea. This is the site for the SSI Death index, http://ssdi.rootsweb.ancestry.com/ and it also contains a tutorial...should be helpful to you. I'm afraid I have no idea how to answer your last question..."What is the best way to look for living relatives".....if you mean, how do you find others who are researching the same family, then the answer is simply to get your name 'out there' on the internet, along with your family name, in the hopes that others will find you. Join the lists for the surnames and post on the genforum If you mean, how to find your more immediate family, then remember....the first thing to do is talk with every living relative you have...ask them what they know about the family, and write it down. Don't accept it as fact, but use as clues only.... I would suggest you visit the web site of Cyndie's list...there are many articles and tutorials included on the site that would be a help. There are also no answers for " What and where is a good source for people from Canada, Poland, Germany, and Russia"....if someone said to you "where is a good source for people from the US?", what would you answer? There IS no real answer....other than get on the web and read, read, read..... I do think, though, that you need a very basic genealogical research book....I'm sure your library will have several.... Sandra 1. What and where is a good source for people entering the US, but not through Elis Island? 2. What and where is a good source for people from Canada, Poland, Germany, and Russia? 3. Up through what year are US census, and SSID death info available? 4. What is the best way to look for living relatives? My biggest problem is that all that is known are names, and sometimes just the first name. Is there a good place for searching people in Europe?
When searching at Google (or any other Boolean type search), putting quotes around words tells the search engine to search for that EXACT string, not just in proximity, but exactly. That can be a difficulty when searching a name - for example, if you search for "John H. Rockwell" it will show you only those results - and not include those that show John Rockwell or J. H. Mark, If you had done a simple google with "linden farm" +chester county pennsylvania as your subject, the first 'hit' in the list would have been the site which contained the info on the area , including the Linden farm info sent you by a helpful fellow list member... http://www.livingplaces.com/PA/Chester_County/Birmingham_Township.html Never underestimate what you can find using google as your search engine.....however, it is a help to put " " around the main subject, thereby ensuring that you will find the words within that subject in proximity....then, after your 'subject', you may modify that subject by, as in this case, using +chester county pa....this will then only give you sites that contain the words "linden farm" in proximity, PLUS contain the words Chester co pa....this will definitely cut down on the sites you wouldn't be interested in and give you only sites that would be helpful in your hunt! Sandra " This may be a long shot. A cousin recalls hearing about a farm owned or run by a member of the BARTON family which was called the Linden Farm. He recalled it being located somewhere in Chester County, right next to a Quaker meeting house, but he doesn't know the town.Does any of this sound familiar to anyone??" ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message
