    1. [PaOldC] Memorial Day
    2. Sandra Ferguson
    3. Memorial Day, first known as Decoration day, was first widely observed on May 30, 1868, to commemorate the sacrifices of Civil War soldiers, and was a proclamation from General John Logan, head of the GAR.....Grand Army of the Republic.... an organization of Union veterans..... sailors and soldiers....of that very American war, our civil war... On May 5, 1868, Logan declared in General Order No. 11 that: The 30th of May, 1868, is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village, and hamlet churchyard in the land. In this observance no form of ceremony is prescribed, but posts and comrades will in their own way arrange such fitting services and testimonials of respect as circumstances may permit. This celebration was an offshoot of various local ones that had been taking place in both the north and south, in the 3 years since the end of the war. Several towns, in both north and southern states, claim to have been the first, but in 1966,President Lyndon Johnson declared Waterloo, N.Y., the official birthplace of Memorial Day....seemingly more because of the elaborate local celebrations held there yearly, than because it had held the first. In 1971, Congress declared Memorial Day a national holiday to be celebrated the last Monday in May, to honor those who died serving their country....Veterans day is celebrated the last Thursday in Nov, to honor ALL who served, not just those who died. On a personal note, if you ever have an opportunity to be in DC for Memorial Day, you'll find it a very moving experience. Thousands of motorcyclists (upwards of 10,000) make the ride to DC from the West Coast and all points east, and converge on the Vietnamese War Memorial, for most of these fellas were Vets of that terrible war. They come to reminisce with others who have shared the same experience, honor their dead comrades, and use their very presence as witness to the fact that the fallen have not been forgotten. So, don't forget to think of them today. Sandra

    1. [PaOldC] Image Identification?
    2. Keith McKain
    3. I have an image of 45 people in front of what appears to be a hotel - probably taken about 1890-1920. I think I have been able to identify 5 of the people as belonging to the Riale family. I think this was taken in Chester County - probably near Russellville. One of the persons is George A Riale's tombstone is in Beulah Baptist Church graveyard, Russellville, PA, inscription, "RIALE - 1872 George A. Riale 1950 his wife 1871 Sara E. Riale 1942 - 1898 Effa May 1898". George owned the land adjacent to the cemetery and donated a portion of the land to the church to allow for expansion of the cemetery. I would glady send the image to anyone willing to take a crack at identifying the location and/or some of the people involved. Due to limits on the list - please Email me directly. 1. Re: [PaOldC] Rachel Pusey b.1694
    2.    While there are many with the surname Pusey, in Chester Co, there is no  Rachel (I'm assuming  Racel was a type-o) in the index of the HISTORY  OF CHESTER COUNTY PA, by Futhey and Cope.  It would help if you would  furnish  husband's name, and tell how you know her to have been born  in 1694....these are often clues as to where to look next. For instance,  as I imagine she was married when her parents died, it would be helpful to  know her married name to see if she, with that surname, is mentioned in  the will of a parent.                                                                                                                                          Sandra    " Looking for parents of Racel Pusey Anyone here  have them?"

    2. Sandra Ferguson
    3. from a lookup in HISTORY OF CHESTER COUNTRY, by Futhey and Cope; (what a very strange surname...I've never run into it before, and feel fairly sure it didn't 'start life' with this spelling.) The only one I found in F&C is included below, and with a given name of Reece, I think you can proceed on the theory that he was Welsh; (as the following is an early date I also looked in the court records 1697-1710, but had no luck....I looked through all the Rs for another possible spelling, but nothing. There were also no area wills, including Chester and surrounding counties, that contained the name, that spelling, in any way. 1689 Land-Holders of Chester Co; Reece Rhithry...250 acres

This Meeting House was active from 1828 - 1915 and looks much as it did when it was laid down in 1915. Early families included: Baker, Barnard, Brinton, Broomell, Brosius, Clendenon, Coates, Gatchel, Hambleton, Kent, Lloyd, Maule, Preston, Rakestraw, Taylor, Townsend, Walton, Wood and others. This Meeting was closely connected to Penns Grove Meeting House and the families interrelated. I'll probably be at the cemetery by 1, or sooner if someone makes a request to connect. This meeting will also be open for worship and visiting on August 30th, 2009. Hope you can join us. Judy Walter Heald

    1. [PaOldC] JANE A. NOLAN
    2. Sandra Ferguson
    3. As you have a death date for John, have you gotten an obit for him? That should give valuable info on his wife, his own parentage, etc. How about his death certificate? I'm not sure if the death certificate would have any info on his wife, as you believe her to already have died, but it's worth a shot....and, I think his obit would say "his wife, the late Jane Ague Nolan, or what have you. How about the son's death certificate and newspaper obit? Those should contain the names and perhaps places of birth of his parents....ditto for any of his siblings...their death certificates and obits would contain the same parental info. How about census? Jane's place of birth will be included in census info, to at least let you know if she had been born in Pa, or Ireland....start with the 1850..she will be enumerated by name from then on....and be sure to watch for all the possible spellings. When you're in trouble with a name spelling, I think it far better to actually look at the records yourself, rather than just having someone do a census lookup...who knows if they'll use all the possible spellings, etc. I'm a firm believer in look see with 'human eyes'! (I looked on a CD of the PA 1850 census...there were no Agrue, Agrers, Ageres, Agur, Agars, Agares included in the state, but I'm not fond of this CD, so wouldn't take it as truth) I would imagine that they were probably Roman Catholics, so have you looked into Catholic church records, where they lived? I actually appears that these people didn't live in Chester, but Delaware Co, so it would be best if you addressed your query to the Del. Co list....you'd have a better chance of finding someone else researching the name, or the area. Good luck. Sandra " I am looking for JOHN J. NOLAN's wife's (JANE) maiden name. I know it begins with an A since I can view the name on her son's WWI registration card dtd Sep 1918 (John I. 2. Sandra Ferguson
    3. I checked the CD of PA wills (Westmoreland not included), and find no mention, in any way of anyone named Lute, Loot, Luet.....not in Chester or any surrounding counties. I found a George Lutre in the 1765 Chester Archives, listed as living in Charlestown (I went back to the will CD, but no Lutres either). There is no mention, in THE HISTORY OF CHESTER COUNTY PA , by Futhey and Cope, of the surname...any spelling I can think of. Sandra "Am also researching the Lute family from Westmoreland County. It is said that my Nicholas Lute came from Chester Co.,Pa. In Chester Co. there were George, Jonathan, Michael, Peter and Thomas besides Nicholas. Nicholas began improvements on his Westmoreland plantation in 1772."
