    2. Deborah, You may want to do a search for Benjamin Combs + Chester county Pennsylvania + history + Quaker in your search window. 3. There are no wills that contain the name Coombe, in any way.....in Chester or surrounding counties. There is only one Coombe mentioned in THE HISTORY OF CHESTER COUNTY, by Futhey and Cope...and that was in the late 1800s...and he was a Methodist. There is no mention of the name in any of the Quaker meeting records I have, or any of my other Chester Co books. How do you know he was born in Chester Co, and why do you think him to have been a Quaker? It's helpful to have some sort of background info to work with. Sandra " Could someone help me find additional information about Benjamin Coombe, born 1710 in Oxford, Chester County? I believe he was a Quaker."

    3. I did a google, using ''stephen cole" +pennsylvania as my subject, and found the following, in "EARLY CHURCH RECORDS OF DELAWARE COUNTY PA"...under St Paul's records....(apparently wife Martha remarried after Stephen's death, so you might be able to find out more about her by researching her under he new married name. however, no will for Albert Russell in Del Co) John Cole, son Stephen and Martha, bapt 3 Nov, 1728 Elizabeth Cole - dau Stephen and Martha Cole bapt. 27 Sept 1730...d 19 June 1731..bur 27 June 1731 James Cole, son Stephen and Martha bapt April, 1732 Martha Cole, former widow of Stephen Cole, dec, but late the wife of Albert Russell, d. 15 Nov, 1761. Stephen Cole d 4 Jan 1744, aged 44 Elizabeth Cole d 22 Sept, 1732, age 70, buried 24 Sept 1732, at St Paul'[s (this is, according to lots of entries at the LDS, the mother of Stephen....if you visit the LDS site, you'll see lots of info on the family.......this is the URL for all those who contributed the info...you might want to contact some of them, and ask their documentation. http://www.familysearch.org/eng/Search/frameset_search.asp >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>.. this is the URL for those who submitted info on the family of Martha Hunter...you might also want to contact them, and ask where they got the info http://www.familysearch.org/eng/Search/frameset_search.asp >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> I also found another Stephen Cole, who lived in Del. Co, PA, at the same time 'your' Stephen did.....this one was a member of St David's, Radnor, Del Co, Pa, in 1731. so, be aware......not everything you find under the name Stephen Cole can be assumed to be YOUR Stephen....(makes it tough, I'm afraid)! I noted that the Hunter family on the LDS site also belonged to StDavids....so, it appears to me, this may be another Stephen Cole....you'll need to be careful, with 2 of them!

    2. Aimee Heinly
    3. Maybe her name was Martha Mercy or Mercy Martha, and they weren't consistent with which name they used on documents? I know many people even today who have that problem....they go by their middle name, but for official things people insist on using only their proper first name. I also have confusion when it comes to my 'Rice' line. It is very vague and inconsisitent. I do know that John Rice (1624-1689) and Ann Hackley (1628-1683) had a daughter Rachel Rice (1664-1743) who is my (x8) grandmother. I'm unsure who John Rice's parents were, or how he fits into the Edmund Rice Assn trees. [John and Ann were both born in England, married and died in Dedham; Rachel was born in Dedham, MA]. -Aimee Matlack Heinly ----- Original Message ----- From: "Dora Smith" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, June 05, 2009 10:20 AM Subject: [PaOldC] Did the names Mercy and Martha belong to the same woman? >I know we've got some real historical linguists on this list. > > In Massachusetts, Joseph Rice married Mercy King in Sudbury in 1658. 1. [PaOldC] Did the names Mercy and Martha belong to the same woman?
    2. Dora Smith
    3. I know we've got some real historical linguists on this list. In Massachusetts, Joseph Rice married Mercy King in Sudbury in 1658. He and his wife Martha then had four children between 1660 and 1668, when his wife Martha died. There are holes in the bmd records in that time and set of places. It is not unlikely that Mercy died and Joseph married Martha and there is no existing record. As nearly as we can tell from the records, Mercy's name was really Mercy and was not a reporting mistake. The name Martha appears in the records on five separate occasions. I'd have said, as the older of the Edmund Rice genealogies states, that Mercy died soon after her marriage and the children are Martha's. But Torrey's New England marriages and the Edmund Rice Assn insist that Martha and Mercy were the same woman. Edmund Rice Assn is given to bizarre fits of brain fog. How likely is it that one woman went by the names Mercy and Martha? Yours, Dora Smith Austin, TX [email protected]

    3. I have heard from Curt and he is, indeed, interested in any/all information on Stephen Cole and family. So, again, here is what Curt knows and wants to know. ""Stephen Cole. He married a Hunter and had many children in Chester Co. PA early 1700's. Our line goes through William Cole who migrated to Rowen Co. NC" I believe the following is Stephen's will...apparently he died rather young, or at least left underage children. COLE, STEPHEN. Chester borough, yeoman.December 26, 1744. January 17, 1744/5. B. 173.Provides for wife Martha. To son Stephen my lott of land in Chester containing about 12 acres when 21 also £10. To sons John, James, William and Mark and daughter Elizabeth Cole, 5 lotts of ground in Chester when of age. Executors: wife Martha and friends Thos. Cummings and Res Richd. Backhous. Witnesses: John Mather, James Mather.[Some of the sons went to Fayetteville, NC about 1758.] (I searched for Martha Cole and Martha Hunter, looking for the names in an area will of a parent, but no luck., nor did she leave a will in the name Martha Cole...I can't find Wm, John, James, Elizabeth Cole in any other area wills either.) >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Stephen Cole was a member of ST Paul's Church, and was a vestryman for the year 1742....this is an Episcopal Church (now in Del. Co), so this might be somewhere to start looking....Episcopal records.... a lot in Chester, once owned by Stephen Cole, (purchased in 1741), was later purchased by the Quakers, to erect a school-house ..

    3. We've discussed this before, but before Curt joined the list...so, I think it needs mentioning again. I'm never sure, when people send this sort of posting, if the poster is only looking for other relatives of a common ancestor, OR, if they are looking for information on that ancestor. Often, when I see this sort of post, I simply delete it when, as in this case, I'm nor related to the ancestor....but, I'm often left wondering if I should have asked. As you all know, I always try to answer any query, with information I find....as do others on this list.....but, when someone says "I'm looking for relatives", I'm not at all sure my info is wanted. The bottom line is if, in reality, you're looking for information from ANY source, please don't say you're only looking for other descendants to correspond with. So, Curt, if you're interested in my looking through my resources for info on Stephen Cole, and family, please let me know. Sandra " Searching for researchers who might have a connection to Stephen Cole. He married a Hunter and had many children in Chester Co. PA early 1700's. 3. Have you seen the original of the certificate record with Chris:Stocton? Without seeing the original using the :, I wouldn't assume that it actually appears in the original. With transcriptions, many put in punctuation...commas, apostrophizes, etc, that don't actually appear in the original doc...for the sake of clarity. I looked in lists of all the meeting abbreviations in Hinshaw, and it is not used by any, in their meeting records, as what we could call a "Quaker abbreviation".....like dm or recrq....and, Ar did not appear in any of the records in Hinshaw, in any way...so, whatever it is, it wasn't commonly used. I read somewhere that it was an abbreviation for Alexander, but I've had that name many times in local records....some abbreviated as Alex....but none as Ar. I'd think it might be Arthur, but that's strictly a guess. Unfortunately I've seen relatively few original MM records, so have no answer for the use of : I googled punctuation and found the following site.... and : was used, although not, apparently, to indicate something is an abbreviation....but, in those days, I'm sure folks and very 'personal 'ways of punctuation things. http://www.physics.ohio-state.edu/~wilkins/writing/Resources/essays/punctuation_hist.html Sandra "When Joshua Hoopes came to America he brought a certificate with him and it was recorded by Friends in Bucks county. One of the signers of said certificate was an Ar:Stringer Does anyone know what the Ar: means or is it an abreviation of a first name?
