    3. Hi Tim...   I've been wondering why this mailing list has been so quite and why there hasn't been any signs of Sandra for awhile on this mailing list....I was thinking maybe this flu that's been going around was the reason behind that, until you brought this up Tim....thanks for letting me know...I'm sorry to hear that someone has been so hard on Sandra over how she manages this mailing list and has hurt her feelings...Sandra doesn't deserve to be treated that way.....she has given so much of her time and effort over the years in helping out anyone who asks for help with their genealogy research and in making sure that the Old Chester, PA - ML is as good as it is.... Sandra is a role model to follow on how things should be done for anyone who would want to manage a genealogy mailing list...I've learned so much about my family tree, thanks to Sandra, as well as learning more about the lives of other folks  from the same area.....I alway look forward to reading what she has to share with those of us on this mailing list...I really appreciate all she has done to make the Old Chester, PA - ML one of the top genealogy mailing lists out there......I hope it won't be too long before she comes back...I miss hearing from her on this mailing list.... ~  Jamie Riutcel    ________________________________ From: Tim Robinson <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Sent: Mon, December 14, 2009 8:10:35 PM Subject: [PaOldC] No action on List......Why? ----- Original Message ----- List member's Pa-Old Chester, Here it is right near Christmas and this list has been like the dead zone for a few month's. And why?????  No one has asked or wondered out loud on here as to where our List Administrator has disappeared to. A very helpful one at that! I know myself and have kept off the list by not wanting to accuse anyone of causing this action.  But I think something needs to be said about it. Somebody, and you know who you are, gave her a "hard way to go" about how she was running the list. And from that "slap in the face" she decided to take herself off answering people's posts. So I hope that the person who thought they knew how OUR list was run and didn't approve of how Sandra performed her rightful duties as list administrator, can feel responsible for their actions. There was not another administrator on any of these mail lists that was as helpful and knowledgable as Sandra has been for us. I do miss her very much on here and I hope that at some point she will return the Old-Pa List back to a real good functioning genealogy forum as it once was. Thanks for listening............ 2. Timothy - Until you posted this item I did not realize how "slow" this list has been (no responses from Sandra since September 8th?). Personally I have not been doing much research or posting but have very much enjoyed the information shared here. Sandra has been a GREAT, VERY HELPFUL list administrator. If what you say is true, she may be feeling unappreciated. It would be a shame if someone as helpful as Sandra would stop something she obviously loves because of the opinion of one person. Sandra - I hope all is well with you and you will return soon. (mailto:[email protected]) Karen In a message dated 12/14/2009 11:10:46 P.M. 3. CCHS has both the Village News archives AND the Daily Local News, all on Microfilm. They are not catalogued, however, as far as names go. The clippings are in the file cabinet system and they are catalogued by surname and/or place. If you have access to West Chester University's Library system (or one of the other Pennsylvania state university libraries); the best one (to me) is America's Historic Newspapers via Newsbank, and they have Accessible Archives as well. The Chester County Library System has ProQuest online, which subscribes to many newspapers. Heritage Quest is available online via most libraries. I have found that each county subscribes to different papers via ProQuest. I have Chester, Philadelphia, and Lancaster County Library cards, and while they are all different subscriptions, Lancaster has a lot more newspapers, by far. Lynn

    3. The database you mention is Accessible Archives (www.accessible.com). I used to have a subscription, but have let it lapse. It's about $50/yr; has copies of the Village Record (goes way way back) and others. Great site, found lots of old Chester Co. info on ancestors there. If your family is based in Chester Co., it is worth the $$ for a year's subscription (they might even have a shorter, cheaper one - I forget). Here are some examples of some things from Accessible Archives: ITEM #14089 October 12, 1858 VILLAGE RECORD Marriage On the 5th inst., by the Rev. George Hall, Mr. GEORGE W. P. McAFEE, of West Vincent township, to Miss MARY R. BUFFINGTON, of Coatesville. DR 12.3.1935 JACOB L. McAFEE Jacob L. McAfee, East Nantmeal township farmer, died yesterday from a complication of diseases. He was aged 52 years, 7 months and 24 days. He formerly resided near St. Matthews' Reformed Church. Mr. McAfee was a son of the late Jacob and Martha (nee Hoffecker) McAfee, and was known throughout the county as an expert agriculturalist. He operated farms most of his life. He is survived by his wife, Anna (nee Thomas) McAfee; six children; Mary, wife of Clyde Lockart, Pughtown; Thomas E., East Nantmeal; Margaret I., at home; Ida May, wife of Theodore Shannon, Churchtown; George and Walter, at home; four sisters Emma, widow of William Miller; Margaret, wife of William McElroy; Laura, wife of Walter Benny; Florence wife of Harvey Bachman, and 14 grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Friday afternoon at 1.30 o'clock in Nantmeal M. E. Church. Burial will be in St. Matthews' Reformed Cemetery, near Ludwig's Corner. 1. [PaOldC] DuPont letter - PUSEY, SIMMONS, PORTER, GRIMSHAW
    2. A letter written by Mary Ella (Simmons) Pusey, wife of Edward Pusey, just 11 weeks prior to her death on May 1, 1884.  Mrs. Du Pont is, I believe, Sophie Du Pont, a family friend.  Sophia is Ella's sister, Sophia (Simmons) Porter.  Sophia's husband, William T. Porter, was born in Beaufort, South Carolina.  Mary Porter is perhaps Sophia's sister-in-law or mother-in-law.  Julia is unknown to me but William and Sophia named a daughter Julia so perhaps it's another Porter?  Isabella Grimshaw ran a girls boarding school in Philadelphia in the early part of the 19th century.  Sophie is Ella's daughter, then attending Mt. Holyoke College. John "Wilmington Feb. 14th/84 Dear Mrs. DuPont How sorry I am to hear that you are not feeling well, but this long continued spell of damp weather must have a bad effect upon every one, particularly those who are not very strong: please accept my warmest thanks for those lovely flowers - such a treat in Winter - they are still looking fresh & beautiful.  It is so kind in you dear Mrs. Du Pont to think of us when you have so many people & so many things to occupy your thoughts - I trust that your health may be soon restored, and that it may be the will of our dear Father in Heaven to spare you many years yet to your friends. Sophia returned about three ago, she has not been at all well, took a very severe cold, & was threatened with pneumonia, she is much better now, but has not ventured out in this damp weather; the cold in Beaufort was terrible, the houses being so open & the people so unprepared for cold weather, & many of them so poor...  Sophia says the water in their room froze, & she could not kep warm but sat rolled up in a shawl, hovering over the fire, they say they had not had such weather for one hundred years; Julia will remain until March, when her Aunt Mrs. Donner (Mary Porter's sister, whom no doubt you remember) expects to return with her.  I have read her letter to Sophia & should think she is a very lovely and sensible woman. I saw Kittie (or Hettie?) about three weeks ago, she was looking very well, better than she has been for some time.  Went to see Miss Isabella Grimshaw and found her looking very well, and seeming very bright and cheerful, she enjoys so much having her old scholars come to see her, but at times she must feel lonely and desolate, for of course the doctor is out a great deal, & many an hour she spends alone.  Sophie is doing very well at school & appears to be happy & interested in her studies, in her last letter she said, - six more Sundays and I shall be at home again; they give their Spring vacation in March, she will come home about the 28th and return the 9th of April. Hoping dear Mrs. Du Pont that you may soon be better and with love I remain yours aff. Ella Pusey"

    1. [PaOldC] 1783 Letter from James McDowell in Ireland to cousin James McDowell in Chester Co.
    2. This letter was written to Capt. James McDowell of Oxford Township May 4, 1783, as the Revolution was winding down,  from his cousin, also named James McDowell, living back in Toubermore (near Clony in northern Ireland)  Capt. James was reputedly the son of John, a farmer, while his Irish namesake was the son of James, an innkeeper.  These older John and James were brothers, the sons of another John McDowell who, again, according to family lore, came to northern Ireland from Scotland with his brother, also named, you guessed it - James!  Indeed this lack of imagination through a line eleven generations long - aside from my mother (only child), ten generations through my son are named James (2) , John (6), or Thomas (2)! John "Dear Brother - "I take this opportunity to let you know that I am well at present.  Hoping these lines will find you in the same.  Your Father and Mother, Brothers and Sisters also is well and living happy all together in the old farm.  Only the Doctor which is happily married in Maghera and has got Miss Clark and fortune by land of 42 lb. per year forever. "Dear John I sent with Samuel Sinclair a setout coat and two shirts, a pair of gloves at the beginning of that cruel war that you had but never got a letter from you. "The dispute that My Father and Uncle John had with the landlord ended in our favor and we enjoy the town of Cloney greatly. "I fell into dealing shortly after you went off and I think I now am worth 300 Lb Sterling at present.  If you would come over to Ireland it would be a glad sight to us and we would go over with you.  If you are scarce of money I would assist you when you would come. "If this letter is opened by the care of the outside direction, my Cousin James, I beg that there may be a letter whether you are dead or not.  I add no more but desire to be remembered to all my friends in America. "Direct your letter to the care of Mr. Robert Stuart, Merchant, Londonderry or Mr. John Stevenson, Forth William. "From your Father and Mother and Brothers & Sisters, and now I, James McDowell"

    1. [PaOldC] Correspondance Mary Edith Pusey to Mrs. DuPont
    2. One of the ironies of old family letters that get passed down is that they are often written by non-family members and are full of news of people not related to us.  Such is the case with this letter written by my great, grand-aunt to Sophie? DuPont - original letter is at Hagley Museum. "Dear Mrs. DuPont, Many thanks for the beautiful chrysanthemums you sent me, they are one of my favorite flowers. I have been intending to write you for some time but have been so busy knowing that you have such a kind interest in us.  I wanted to tell you of Sophi's engagement, she is going to marry Mr. McDowell the Presbyterian minister near Centerville; it will be a great change for her, but I do hope she will be very happy, she is now, though it was very hard for her to decide.  it has taken her about two years to make up her mind.  It will be a short engagement as they expect to be married in the spring. I have not heard from the Coupland children for some time now.  If possible we want them down to spend Xmas with us, they seem to enjoy themselves so much here. I was sorry to hear of your eyes troubling you.  I do hope they are better now. Sophie is away at present meeting a school friend and Ethel and I are getting a little foretaste of how lonely we shall be. Hoping you are feeling better I am most sincerely, M. Edith Pusey Wilmington 11/8/87" Mary Edith's great-aunt, Mary Ella Simmons (d. 1879), was a neighbor and lifelong friend of Sophie duPont, thus the connection. Mary Edith never married.  She was the daughter of Edward and Mary Ella (Simmons) Pusey.  She and her younger sisters, Sophia and Ethel were orphaned when their parents died in 1886 and 1884 respectively.  A year after their father's death, the three girls were 24, 22, and 16 respectively and shared a house in Wilmington.  The Mr. McDowell engaged to Sophia/Sophie Pusey, was the Rev. Thomas Rankin McDowell, then the minister of the Lower Brandywine Presbyterian Church.  Just over a year after his marriage in March, 1888, he assumed the pastorate of the Upper Octoraro Presbyterian Church near Parkesburg, Chester Co.
