    3. I would like to send a scan of a document that I have in a pile of "stuff" to someone who is interested in the Quaker Dobbins family who would have been found first in Chester County, PA and then later in NC and possibly still later at Salem MM in Henry County, Iowa. Marsha Moses

    1. Re: [PaOldC] Jesse Marsh (b. ca. 1755) m. Margaret Harlan (b. ca. 1759)
    2. >From p. 64 of "History and Genealogy of the Harlan Family," by Alpheus Harlan, orig. published 1914 "Margaret [Harlan], b. 8, 8, 1759; d. probably in Fayette Co., Pa.; m. Jesse Marsh, 1777.  No further record." I happened to notice on p. 65 that Margaret's uncle Jonathan Harlan "...m. at Sadsbury, 10, 19, 1745, Deborah Marsh, Friend, b. Chester Co., date unknown; d. there; bur. at London Grove; a dau. of William and Sarah Marsh."  Jonathan's children are listed along with spouses but there is 'no further record' for many of them.  Jonathan Jr. and his mother Deborah sold some lands in West Marlborough Twp., 1792. The 'no further record' suggests to me that Alpheus didn't see any obvious records of them in the Quaker records he consulted and also that no descendents had seen and responded to his requests for information.  So your conclusion about leaving the Society seems good and the Fayette County suggests a next point of research.  You might also check with the Harland Family Association - they've got almost a hundred years of updates and errata to Alpheus' research and maybe more information on Jesse and Margaret.  www.harlanfamily.org John ----- Original Message ----- From: "Maria Campbell" <miabethc@gmail.com> To: "PA Chester" <PA-OLD-CHESTER-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, February 8, 2012 5:03:26 PM Subject: [PaOldC] Jesse Marsh (b. ca. 1755) m. Margaret Harlan (b. ca. 1759) Is anyone else researching Jesse Marsh (b. ca. 1755) & his wife, Margaret Harlan (b. ca. 1759)? I believe they were married in 1777 at the Kennett MM, but I don't think they remained Quakers. Jesse was the s/o William (1725-1784) & Mary [Jefferis] Marsh (1727- ?). Margaret was the d/o William (1724-1819) & Abigail [Hollingsworth] Harlan (1729-1807). Jesse & Margaret had at least two children, Hollingsworth & Reuben Marsh, both of whom lived in the Gap area of Lancaster County either in Sadsbury or Salisbury townships, which would be a short distance west of where Jesse's grandfather, William Marsh (d. 1744) would have lived. Hollingsworth was the postmaster in Gap in 1809 & ran a hotel, but died the same year. Reuben was a farmer & stone mason by trade & was married to Ann Barkman in 1804. “History of Chester Co, PA” by Futhey & Cope  p. 122-123: Jesse Marsh, clerk in Capt. Alexander Sterrett’s company, 1st battalion of the 44th regt., PA militia. Other than the above mention, I can find very little on Jesse Marsh & suspect he may have been a stone mason, too. I'd like to know if he had any other children, where he was buried, or really anything about him or his family. 3. I have the complete Kennett meeting records, and there is no marriage listed for a Jesse Marsh and a Margaret Harlan. There are several pages of Harlans, but only one Margaret who was received in membership in 1853.. nothing in the Concord records, several Marshes in the New Garden meeting, but no Jesse; ditto the Bradford meeting; ditto Uwchlan & Goshen. There is no mention of William and Mary Marsh, in the Kennett meeting either, though I do find them in F&C ; Wm Jefferis d 11-23-1777 buried Birmingham Meeting (as that would probably be the meeting his unwed daughters would have married in, I'd try the Birmingham meeting records. I don't have these) . Mary Jeffries, dau of Wm b.5-29-1727, m Wm Marsh of Sadsbury. I checked and Jesse is not listed in the Sadsbury Meeting records, either. There is no mention of the name Jesse Marsh in any area wills.....Chester, Del, Bucks, Berks, Philly, Lanc, I looked at page 122 and see that Jesse Marsh was the clerk for the vote taken in Capt. Sterrett's Co..the date is around Oct of 1794. Most of the voters in this Militia Co are from Fallowfield, so I'd say it would be a good working theory that Jesse was from that neck of the woods, too...thre were also several from Sadsbury. I would be a help to know where you found the info you include, especially ther earlier data, and where you found the children of Jesse and Margaret...sometimes, these serve as a clue as to where I should be looking. William Penn granted,1-13-1683,to Thomas Calvert,300 acres;to John Calvert,300 acres, and to Margaret Calvert,100 acres, all laid out together in Upper Providence 1-25-1683.On 2-11-1691,it was ordered that a patent for the whole should be made to John Calvert,to whom it was made appear to belong.Perhaps the others were his children. At Chester Monthly Meeting 4-6-1687, mention is made of a difference between Thomas Hollingsworth and John Calvert, about dividing their lands in Upper Providence.Valentine Hollingsworth, father of Thomas, had married for 2nd wife,Ann Calvert, and John Calvert was probably a brother. There was a presumption of relationship in that day to Lord Baltimore, the Proprietor of Maryland. The children of John and Judith, born in this country, were Daniel,b.5-6-1685,who m.about 1709,Elizabeth Pritchett;and Mary,b.12-19-1687.Judith,another daughter,m.10-8-1725,Daniel Broom,of Marple.Ruth Calvert, who m.about1697,Edward Paviour,of Upper Providence, was probably an older child. At a court held 6-25-1702,the sheriff made return of an execution on the estate of John Calvert, which was sold to Thomas and Joshua Calvert for Lb.243.These were probably sons of John.Joshua was constable of Upper Providence in 1704.Thomas bought a lot in Chester in 1700,and sold it in 1702.After this the land in Upper Providence appears to have been held by Joshua and Daniel Calvert,of whom the first had 370 acres in 1724.It seems, however,to have been patented Feb.6,1739,to John Worrall (608 1/2 acres),who, with Ruth his wife, conveyed a part to Daniel Calvert. Joshua Calvert,m.1709,Deborah Harlan, dau.of George and Elizabeth Harlan, and it is conjectured that they were the parents of Thomas Calvert, the husband of Sarah Williamson. The latter presented an acknowledgment to Goshen Monthly Meeting 6-20-1739,for marriage by a magistrate, and on 8-16-1756,received a certificate from Goshen to Chester Monthly Meeting, with their children, who are not named. They appear to have lived after this in Edgmont and perhaps he is the same Thomas Calvert who was in East Marlborough,1762-3-4,and perhaps later. He does not appear to have been in membership with Friends, and when or where he and his wife died has not been discovered. 3. Jane Fairlamb, who married John Skelton in 1713 in Bucks County, is said to have come from Mount Mellick Meeting to Pennsylvania with [or to?] her relative Nicholas Fairlamb. I find no other Fairlamb record in Bucks County. Has anyone seen such an arrival record? 3. I wonder if the jail was over crowded on Saturday night? In early times the office of sheriff was not so profitable as it now is, and as a sort of perquisite the sheriff was allowed to keep tavern. Hence we find Nicholas Fairlamb, a newly elected sheriff, petitioning to the court to be recommended for a license. In later times the tavern was kept in the dwelling apartment of the prison. -----Original Message----- From: pa-old-chester-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:pa-old-chester-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Sandra Ferguson Sent: Wednesday, February 01, 2012 04:34 AM To: pa-old-chester-l@rootsweb.com Subject: [PaOldC] Nicholas Fairlamb from a lookup: FAIRLAMB, Nicholas, from Stockton, in the county of Durham, England, came to Pennsylvania in 1700, and settled at first in Philadelphia. 3. Nicholas came for England, NOT Ireland...(.I posted the info from the Philly arrivals for Nicholas...Stockton MM, Co Durham, England.).....so, if Jane came from Mt Mellick meeting, while she might have somehow been related to Nicholas, she didn't arrive with him (how proven IS the Mt Mellick info ?).....I checked the IMMIGRATION OF THE IRISH QUAKERS INTO PA 1682-1750, by Myers, and there is no mention of Jane. Generally speaking, too, people who came together and landed together, etc, are included together in the Phil arrivals, and there is no Jane included, which you would expect to see, had she arrived with Nicholas. It may well be that someone saw the name , Fairlamb and said "'I'll bet they are related...maybe Jane/Jean came with him"....you know how people's theories become fact, with NO proof!) I checked the Bucks Co wills, and the name Fairlamb appears on none of them, in any way...even wittness. I did find this, which I'll include in case you don't have it. (there was no will or adm papers for Jane). Page 19. John Skelton of Solebury Twp. March 25, 1748. Proved June 29, 1760. Wife Jane. Son Joseph (Exr.), "Plantation I live on." Children, Jane, Narey, Robert Skelton, Ann Wilson, William and Mary Skelton. Wit: John Watson, Thomas Watson, Thomas Abbott. from the Solesbury MM records; Children of John and Jane Skelton: John and Jane Skelton (twins) b. 10th day of 2nd month, 1715; Robert Skelton b. 26th day of 10th month, 1716; Margaret Skelton b. 13th day of 9th month, 1718; Ann Skelton b. 21st day of 6th month, 1721; William Skelton b. 15th day of 6th month, 1723. 4/1/1712/3 - Complaint from John Skelton that James Streater owes him a sum of money. Isaac Atkinson has a mind to remove into the compass of Chesterfield Meeting. Complaint by Jonathan Cooper against Lawrance Pearson. Bucks Co Falls MM...men's minutes;? 5/3/1714 - Marriage of John Skelton and Jean Fearlamb accomplished. (note the alt spelling...Fearlamb, and that she is recorded as being JEAN, not JANE...I went back to the CD of wills, but no Fearlamb wills in Chester, either.) 6/11/1719 - John Skelton hath sustained great loss by fire and stands in need of assistance. (there's a huge amount of info on various Skeltons in the Buckimgham MM....Bucks Co...births and deaths....too many to type in all, but if you give me some specific names and aprox. dates, I'll see what I can come up with. 3. This isn't just the sort of thing that happened in 'antiquity'. I remember reading a article in our state magazine, written by the son of a county sheriff...probably in the 40s or 50s. The family had a 'room' in their home for the prisoners to stay in, and the "jail birds' often joined the family for meals...my, my...how times have changed! In early days housing prisoners was a big problem for many areas....thus, the public whippings and the like. This wasn't done to be cruel or unkind, so much as to 'dole out' punishment that didn't require incarceration, which wasn't possible. A person had no money to pay for his 'crime', and there was no place to lock him up, where he would have had to be fed, etc, a drain on twp funds....so, there wasn't much left to do BUT administer some sort of physical punishment. 3. ; QUAKER ARRIVALS AT PHILADELPHIA 1682-1750, by Myers Nicholas Fairlamb, "hath lived and belonged to our meeting the time of his aprentisship and since he hath been loose from his Mr; (master) being sevean years hath behaved himself orderly and honestly." From MM at Stockton, Co of Durham, England, dated 6 m 13, 1700. Received 9 m 29, 1700. (this last date is the date he presented his certificate to the new meeting. When one was a Quaker, one had to take a certificate, such as this one, to the new meeting he planned to attend...it was sort of a report on the person, and Nicholas was deemed okay to be recommended to the new meeting. ( I checked the Philadelphia Quakers but found nothing further on Nicholas beyond his presenting his certificate to the meeting) "Nicholas Fairlamb, of the township of Middletown, in Del, Co, Pa, son of Frederick Fairlamb of the same place, and Mary, his wife; ; and Mary, dau of Nathaniel Walter and his wife Mary , both deceased, at the Concord meeting deceased 14 12m 1808 in a public meeting at Concord". New Garden meeting records...."Elizabeth d of Nicholas and Katharine, of Chester, was b 1711-9 and married John Hurford
