    1. [PA-OBITS] Obits in PA
    2. Jody
    3. Hello! I'm not sure how this list works exactly but from what I read I'm hoping I can ask if anyone knows how to get a hold of obituaries in York or Brogue Pennsylvania? I am looking for an obituary for my 'father' Joseph Milton Burns, Sr. He last lived in Brogue/Red Lion area. If anyone has any information on him or how to search for it myself, I'd greatly appreciate it! Thanks so much! 3. Julie/Amy, If anyone else is looking for their year of their relative coming to USA, there is a box in I think its the 1910 or 1920 census for Naturalization year or immigration year something along those lines. Check it on some census records! Good luck, Cathy Raber ----- Original Message ----- From: To: PA-OBITS-L@rootsweb.com Sent: 2/21/03 5:53:11 AM Subject: Re: [PA-OBITS] Amy's Quest Dear Julie, I checked the pension records for him and there are none. I don't even know where to begin to check naturalization records not knowing when he came to this country. Thank you for the suggestion. 2. Hi, Tombstones do contain some bad information at times. My grandmother, who died in the 1960's, has the wrong birthdate on her tombstone. My uncle who ordered the stone, told them the wrong year of birth. Anyone researching for her date of birth, could come up with the wrong date. Her current descendants all know about the incorrect date, but sometime in the future, someone could find incorrect information. Happy Hunting!

    2. Hi Amy, Was your relative in the armed services or the spouse of someone in the armed services? You might get lucky researching pension records if your relative was either the veteran eligible for the benefits or if a family member received them after his death. Just a thought. Julie

    2. Amy, Were did you write for her death certificate? Was it Philadelphia Archives or Vital records in New Castle, Pa. There is a few possiblities that she was buried but didn't die were she was buried? She would have died somewher else. DO you have her obit or death notice? If you did go through Vital Records in New Castle, Pa. and got back a no-record letter and have everything filled out even the funeral director ( if she had one). DO you know that you can write a letter to the Sceratary of Board of Health who is Robert Zimmerman, Jr. and if you have proof that she died where you said that she died. It's possible he can help you? I had everything filled out and too was getting no-record on Bowers. I spent a lot of money and time trying to find his right death date. The date on his tombstone was wrong. I hit pay dirt, my cousin found his obit in the newspaper and the date was a year later. So, I made one last attempt and got everything returned with my check. and the new form. I put my foot down and sent off a e-mail to Mr. Zimmerman anexplaining my situation and with two days I had a phone call from manager of death departement saying that they had three people plus himself looking and found the death certificate. Now, It you still the no-record letter save it and when you have more postive proof of her place of death then I would send an e-mail to Mr. Zimmerman and see what he can do. Good-luck,

    2. Dear Pat, That is so nice of you to offer, but the problem is, I don't know the date. It was between 1900 and 1910...that is all I know. His name was Frances Hildebrandt, born 1831 in Germany. I don't know when he came to the U.S, only that his widow's name was Augusta Lesser Hildebrandt b. 1836 in Germany. That is alot of records to search, but I appreciate your offer. Amy

    2. Boy, that is frustration. I think I am going to have to go back east myself and do all the legwork..no one else could possibly be as interested as I and so would not be as diligent!!! Sorry you did not find yours. I had exactly the same problem in Iowa with my other side. They swore up and down there was no death information. She did die there, I finally found her grave because I read the location in my ggrandfather's military records. He had to state where she was buried. Either she slipped through the cracks, no one recorded it. or????? Amy

    2. Sounds like the problam I have with my great-grandparents. I checked the City Directories and got an idea when they might have died, but even after 10 year searches, Vital Records SWEARS they have NO death certificates for either. Even after I gave them all the info I have. I know for a fact they died in Philadelphia. Maybe it's because their name was SMITH and certain people just didn't feel like looking.

    2. Hi Are the obituaries indexed by name? I am try to locate any of my RABONE ancestors who emigrated to the Homestead and Munhall boroughs of Alleghneny County in 1887. They were still alive in 1910, but start to dwindle after then! Many thanks, Justine in England

    3. Amy Try the link below it gives the names of most of the cemeteries in and around the Philadelphia area, if you write to them they will let you know if your grandparents are buried there. Some will charge a small fee but it is worth it. It took me about 20 letters (which only 2 charged for) to locate my great grandparents, start with the larger ones like Holy Cross and Laurel Hill, give them as much info as you can. He was not of any particular religion that I know of. I don't know when his wife died, either, but my grandmother, their only child, died in California so she is buried out here. I am thinking that I will have to go to Philadelphia myself to sit and sift through all the records as no one else can do that for me. thank you for your help, Amy CA ============================== To join Ancestry.com and access our 1.2 billion online genealogy records, go to: http://www.ancestry.com/rd/redir.asp?targetid=571&sourceid=1237
