List, Thank you all for replying to my message in regards to an obit for my grandfather. All suggestions and advise is very much appreciated and thank you kindly.Such nice folks on this list. Margie in Va.
If the death occurred in 1973 in Delaware County, it could very well be in the Philadelphia papers (Daily News, Inquirer or Bulletin, which was still in operation then). YOu can contact the Free Library of Philadelphia; they may have the obit.
Did you ask the name of the newspaper that they looked in or if there were others that were for the area at the time? Could be others in the area, right. Some have more than one nowadays! Our locals "up home" have two locals that do the same obituary. Perhaps the PA State archives could tell ya!? Hello List, Does anyone know if Pa has a vital statistic sight on line, for births, marriages and deaths. I have been looking for Simon K. Detrick for several years. I know he moved from Ohio to somewhere in Pa. He was working at a refinery(SOHIO?) in Lima, Ohio when he transferred to Pa. This occured in the late 20's to 30's. I thank you for your help. HOw about checking County Histories for their parents their familiy members listed. Stranger things have happened, but you'll probably want the death certificate anyways along the way. I am at a loss about three children who all died on the same day - February 28, 1898. They are part of my family, but I do not know how they are connected exactly. They are all buried side by side in my JONES plot in Dunmore Cemetery. Dunmore Cemetery has no additional information. February 28th could be the day they died or they were buried. Their names are: Alfred JONES, age 7 Elizabeth JONES, age 7 days Leah JONES, age 7 days (I am assuming Elizabeth and Leah are twins) A search has already been done with the Interlibrary Loan Program with the Scranton Public Library. A researcher could not find anything in regard to a obituary or news article. For three children to all die so young and on the same day, it must of been something horrific like a fire..... I am guessing they were siblings. There has to be a news record of this tragedy somewhere. Adult names buried in the same section who could be possible parents are: Thomas H. and Rachel Jones, William G. and Martha Jones, James and MaryAnn Jones and Evan S. and Catherine Jones. Some I feel may have been too young or too old to be the parents, but it is worth the consideration. I would like to pay tribute to their memory. These precious children are a mystery. Leah and Elizabeth were just newborns. We can not search any census, because they were born and died between census years. I guess my only other alternative would be to send away for a death record. The place to look for naturalization records would be your local branch of the National Archives (NARA). They have an index of the names of immigrants and when their naturalization application was approved. From that index, you would go to the petition number and bingo. Hope this helps. Donna Di Giacomo
Dear Listers, I would like to find a Philadelphia newspaper obituary of James SMITH (1788 - 1879), a card manufacturer in the city and a known philanthropist of the period. He died April 10 1879, but is buried in his old home area of Leicester, Massachusetts. My interest stems from his having married my wife's distant cousin, Maria DENNY (1793 - 1868). If anyone is able to help I would be very grateful. Yours, etc. Geoffrey Woollard in Cambridgeshire, England.

I have a number of obituaries that I would like to post somewhere - possibly giving someone a hint or clue about their relatives and possibly my own. Is this the right place to post them? Do they have be older than, say, a hundred years? What are the guidelines for posting obits? If not here, where ? Thanks for any response Donald
