    3. Hi, I've just joined your list and not sure of the proper protocol. Is there any archives that I can check for an obituay? I am searching for a James Doughery/Doherty who died in Pennsylvania, possibly in Philadelphia. He was born in Ballyhillion, Malin Head, County Donegal in 1861. His wife Susan or Susanna Dougherty/Doherty was born in 1877 in Donegal, she died in Philadelphia, but I have no idea what year. Before coming to America they had one daughter Margaret who was born in Donegal in 1902, I am assuming they had more children once they came to America. No one in the family knows anything about James, he was my Grandmother Catherine Doherty Smith's brother. Thank you for your help or any suggestions. Margaret Kristich

    1. [PA-OBITS] OBIT: ALONZO WATTS LAWRENCE
    2. I have no further info on the following. The Debtor and Workingman Friday - March 8, 1895 Obituary. Rev. Alonzo Watts LAWRENCE was born in Centerville, Butler county, Pennsylvania, August 9, 1850. He was married to Miss Maggie A. TIDBALL at New Castle, Pennsylvania, June 24, 1878. Mrs. Lawrence is the youngest of four sisters, all of whom married Prebyterian ministers, and all, save the oldest sister, are now widows. Three children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence, Mary Lillian, James Charles and Mabel Evans. The bereaved wife and two daughters survive him. He died of pneumonia at the Presbyterian parsonage in Burlingame, Kansas, on Wednesday, February 27, 1895, at five minutes of nine a.m. From his earliest years Mr. Lawrence has had an unusually bright and vigorous mind. During the long years of his student life he easily stood at the head of the class. After leaving the public schools he attended the Grove City, Pennsylvania, academy, now the Grove City college, where he prepared for the sophomore class and entered Western Reserve college, from which he graduated as one of its best students. He then entered the Theological Seminary at Alleghaney City, Pennsylvania, and graduated with the highest rank in his class in April, 1878, and became the pastor of the Presbyterian church in Pleasant Valley, Butler county, Pa., in the same year; in the summer of 1879 he also assumed charge of New Hope Presbyterian church in the same county; in April 1880, he resigned, visited several churches and on September 1880 became the pastor of the Presbyterian churches of Cameron and Lathrop, Mo., where he remained until May 1883, when he resigned and accepted a call to the Moberly, Mo. Presbyterian church in June, at the same time he had a call to the Presbyterian church of Mechanicsville, Iowa, but declined; he remained at Moberly till the last of October 1885, and then came to Burlingame and preached his first sermon as called pastor on the first Sabbath of November 1885. He preached her until the last Sabbath of 1890, and then accepted a call from Minden, Neb., and commenced his work in the Presbyterian church of that place on the second Sabbath of 1891; he resigned his pastorate thre and accepted a call to his second pastorate here the first Sabbath of May 1892, where he remained until the death angel pronounced his live work ended. During the most of the time of his pastorate here he has preached every two weeks at Red Pepper school house, 5 miles north of Burlingame, where he was as greatly beloved as he was at his own church. Why is it that in this world where there is so much need of earnest Christian workers that he should be cut off in the prime of life, as it would seem, with his life's work only half done? The only answer is God's ways are always right and we can only look to him through our ears and say, "Thy Will be Done."

    1. [PA-OBITS] OBIT: ALONZO WATTS LAWRENCE
    2. I have no further information on the following. The Debtor and Workingman Friday - March 8, 1895 Funeral of Rev. Alonzo Watts Lawrence. The funeral was held on last Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock. The remains lay in the front parlor of the parsonage, on the casket were Easter and Calla lillies, smilax, and an anchor of roses about it gathered the near relatives. Rev. L.O. FORESMAN read a chapter from the bible and Rev. J.G. CUNNINGHAM, of Osage City offered prayer after which Mr. and Mrs. H. B. PRAT? sang, "Beautiful Beckoning Hands." Miss Carrie WALDO playing the accompaniment. The relatives present from abroad were: Dr. V.E. LAWRENCE (brother of Rev. LAWRENCE) and wife, of Halstead, Kansas; Mrs. S.W. McGARRAH, Kiowa, Kansas; sister of Rev. LAWRENCE; R.E. LAWRENCE, of Grove City, Pa, father of Rev. LAWRENCE; Rev. W. D. PATTON and wife, sister of Mrs. LAWRENCE, of Lincoln, Neb., R.M. TIDBALL, of Lincoln, Neb., and Hon. J.L. TIDBALL, of Crete, Neb., brothers of Mrs. LAWRENCE; Mrs. L.J. COOPER, of Crete, Neb., sister of Mrs. LAWRENCE. As the daughters, Lillian and Mabel were both sick, they could not go to the church and the last look at the remains of the departed father, husband, son, brother, and friend was taken by the relatives present. The ball bearers, James OLIVER, Benjamin DUTTON, L.R. ADAMS, William THOMPSON, F.M. NELSON, C.S. OLIVER, W.S. PICKARD, W.B. DAVIS, F.J. WILLIAMS, and E.G. PIPP, then took the remains to the church. The walk from the house to the church was lined on both sides by the members of the organizations to which he belonged. Every seat in the church was filled, all the extra seats, the aisles and place for the choir were occupied, and those who could not get in filled the basement below. At the church as song by the choir consisting of Miss Pearl RAYMOND, Mrs. O.W. ROUSH, Miss Alma PLAMER, and Messrs, M. B. RAYMOND and T.R. HAYSON was followed by scripture reading by Rev. J.O. FORESMAN and prayer by Rev. W.P. HILLYER. The choir then sang, "In the Cross of Christ I Glory." Rev. J.G. CUNNINGHAM, of Osage City, was very properly selected to preach the funeral sermon, having been a personal friend of Mr. Lawrence since childhood. After the sermon an opproutunity was offered those present to take a last look at the remains; and then all that was mortal of the pastor who had so many times crossed the threshold of that church, were for the last time taken from it and conveyed to their place of rest in the cemetery. The Masons took charge of the ceremonies at the grave, which was conducted by J.F. MEHL. Despite the chilling blast that blew from the north, the remains were accompanined by a large delegation from the Masonic and Workman lodges and by a very large number of carriages and persons who were afoot.

    1. Re: [PA-OBITS] Obit request J. William Jost
    2. Dear Sandy - you did so much work, and I am sorry I did not include in my post that the LDS records had been searched to no avail. I work at the Family History Center in Woodbridge, Virginia, so that is usually the first place I look to break down a brick wall. What is it they say about "great minds"... Actually, the LDS record is incorrect. J. William (shown as William) Jost in the 1880 census, was age 42, born in Germany and was a Professor of Music. He had a son born in 1872, also a William who was 37 in the 1910 census, and who was the father of J. William who was born in 1900. Sooo many J. Williams!!! To add to the confusion, there was a J. W. Jost in Philadelphia, age 35 in the 1870 Census, who was a Professor of Music!!! Different wifes, different children!!! I have the LDS and the Census records, but what I really need is a date of death so that I can write for the death certificate. Would love to find an obituary, but there just doesn't seem to be that resource for PA for the time I am looking for. Thanks for looking and thinking of me and my humble request. Best regards, Paula

I have been unable to find the dates of death for either one; however, it was after 1900. If there is an index to deaths, perhaps that would help, but I've not found one on the net. I am trying to determine which of these was my ancestor. I apologize that I cannot furnish the date of death - I am just about at my wit's end!! Thanking you in advance, Paula

They both are buried at the Slovak RC Cemetery in Portage, PA. Thank you once again for anyone who can help me. Melissa
