    3. I've received several requests for reminders to be issued, so here it is. Heads up, everyone - these are important if you want to get an answer to your question! Please properly fill out your subject line. It should contain the following - and ONLY the following! Year / County / Surname All other info (and include as much as you know or suspect!) should go in the message body. The subject line is important for 2 reasons: 1) list members can see at a glance what you're looking for and will know right away if they can help you or not. If they can't, they needn't waste time opening and reading your message; if they can, this info helps them relocate your message in their inbox when they're ready to answer you. Secondly, when you get an answer and you're re-posting for a followup question, click on that answer you received and then hit "reply to all" - this keeps all of your requests and their responses in one email so that it is easy for the researcher to refresh his/her memory as to the details of your request. It also keeps others from asking you to repeat data and keeps you from having to retype info over and over. It keeps all of the info on that surname neatly in one "thread." This is important because our lookup volunteers will not remember your request from one day to the next - there are just too many on this list (actually, things are slow right now - I'm used to seeing 40 to 60 requests a day; nevertheless.....). Also, this makes our archives tidier and easier to browse. Remember, every post is archived and therefore searchable and browseable. To search our archives (and I encourage everyone to do this), go to www.rootsweb.com, select "Threaded Archives" and then type in the box: pa-census-lookup Thirdly, remember that our lookup 'volunteers' are just listmembers who feel like doing some investigating for you. They do not "sign up" to be a volunteer - they are just listmembers like you who decide to help someone else out because they have the time or the resources. To those who do volunteer: please remember to respond to the list and not just to the person privately. If someone wants an image sent, that must be done privately since Rootsweb allows no attachments. However, the data contained in that image should be sent to the list to be archived and thus benefit researchers in the future. While I discourage private requests (emailing a request to a specific lookup volunteer only), I find I often break my own rule - however, I always send the found info to both the requested AND the list, for the sake of the archives. So, volunteers, if you do respond to a private request, make sure you answer to both that person and the list. I will not issue a reminder about manners because we already have such a wonderful, pleasant, polite group on our list!
