Gail, Is there an easier way to search the archives???? It would take HOURS to search through 'each separate month' for the surname(s) I am seeking. Not many of us have that kind of time to spend looking for just one bit of information. It is actually much much faster to just request another lookup. Do the volunteers keep any records of their responses? >To search our archives (and I encourage > everyone to do this), > go to www.rootsweb.com, select "Threaded Archives" > and then type in the box: > > pa-census-lookup > -------------------------------------------- __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? A good question. You can do a search of our list archives this way: Go to Rootsweb.com Under the title Mailing Lists, select "Interactive Search" You will then need to type in our list name - just put pa-census-lookup (that's all) you will then be taken to a search page where you can do a search of each year's submission of posts. If you are just searching for a surname, type that in the box. If you are searching for a full name, put it in quotes (as in "John Smith") - then the search engine will look for those two words together. If you think maybe the person might appear with a middle initial, then you must search like this: john AND smith the word in CAPS is a command, and tells the search engine to look for messages that contain both the word john and smith but not necessarily side by side. You can expand this...say you want a John Smith in Luzerne County, you can type: john AND smith AND luzerne only the commands should be in caps (example: john OR Robert AND smith AND luzerne You must do this for each year's posts. NOTE: If you DO take time to browse the archives (not the Interactive Search above, but by selecting Threaded Archives), you will see very quickly why we stress the importance of the subject line. ALL messages with the same subject line are placed together, so if you see one post with the subject line "1900/Luzerne/Smith" all posts that relate to that subject are in one location. I encourage every list member to both browse and search our archives....we have about 5 year's worth of posts there and you just might find that someone else has researched your line during the past 5 or so years..... They do not sign up to be 'volunteers.' Please try not to exceed the one post per day limitation. ============================== New! Family Tree Maker 2005.
