Girardville is a borough in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, 58 miles (93 km) northwest of Reading. Girardville was named after Stehen Girard, mariner, merchant and philanthropist who in 1830 purchased 67 tracts of land, including the 320 acre tract that was to become Girardville. The tracts were part of a land grant given to William Penn by King Charles II of England in 1681 and remained in the Penn Family until 1775 when sold by Penn's heirs. A financial tycoon of his time, Girard became a merchant seaman at 14 and a ship's captain at 23. Although Girard died in 1831, his will provided for the development of his properties. In 1832 under the direction of William Boyd appointed supervisor of the land, the first buildings in Girardville were constructed: a hotel known as the Girard House which stood where St. Vincent's Church now stands, and Boyd's home, the Mansion. The Mansion also house the real estate office. Girard had been a heavy stockholder and promoter of the Pottsville-Danville Railroad which by 1835 was completed as far as Girardville. It was not until 1870 that the line was extended to Williamsport. The primary reason of the railroad was for transportation of coal but it also supplied the town with freight and passenger service. The only Irish Catholic church I can find in the area is St. Joseph's. The cemetery listing shows no Quinn, but does list Quintinsky. Apparently there was a large Lithuanian population in the area. The other Catholic church, St. Paul's, seems to be primarily Lithuanian... Hello Tonya, A quick Google search shows that Girardville is it's own town. It may have been part of another town but we would need to know what census year you need. You can try using Google and the year...
