Debbie, My greatgrandmother was Inis Felicia Osment. She was born in 1895 to Frances Lee (Sullins) and Henry Stephen Osment in Woodbury, TN. She had siblings Douglas, Angela, John Edward, Lonnie Richard, Virginia "Virgie", and Willa Mae. Henry Stephen Osment was the oldest child of Mary "Polly" (Hawkins) and Joseph S. Osment. He was born in 1867 in Woodbury, Cannon County. Henry Stephen Osment had siblings James R., and Mary E. Osment. Joseph was the son of William and Elizabeth Osment. He was born in Cleveland, Bradley County TN in 1842. The entire family migrated to Woodbury, Cannon County between 1850 and 1860 (In 1850 the family is in Bradley county and in 1860, they are in Cannon county). Joseph and Polly were married in 1866 in Woodbury. Mary "Polly" (Hawkins) Osment died in 1911 in Cannon Co., TN according to the Tennessee death index (index for deaths between 1908 and 1912). I believe that Joseph died prior to 1908. Joseph has NO RECORD for having fought on either side of the Civil War (which I find odd for his age and location). Joseph had 8 siblings: Nathan, Martha J., Sarah C., Mary E., Rebecca A., Lucinda C., John W., and Thomas A. Osment. William and Elizabeth are supposed to have been married in 1836 in South Carolina, but I only have one source that puts them there. William was born in 1812 in North Carolina, possibly in Guilford. With the help of the TN Census data, I have pieced together a family for William, but it is otherwise unconfirmed. In 1840, there was a John Osment in Bradley County, TN. I suspect he is William's father. Without hard data, I really do not know. I cannot find this John in TN in 1830, and at that time, William was not yet married to Elizabeth. When I get a chance, I will go to the National Archives in Fort Worth and look through the NC and TN data for 1830 and see what can be dug up. I understand that there is a chapel and a place called Osment Chapel. I looked it up on the USGS website and it is listed both as a church and a historical site for a villiage/town. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Debbie Newby" <Debbie.Newby@dynetics.com> To: <OZMENT-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, October 17, 2001 10:02 AM Subject: Re: [OZMENT] Oct 6th Reunion > Thanks, Darby! > You're the first that I've found that had attachments to Woodbury. > Unfortunately, my > info is very sparse, I get most of it from my dad who is 80 and whose mind > wanders > quite a bit -- but I'll try to get it together and share with you.
