Hi group. You are doing a wonderful job, Eleanor. Maybe we should start over with an open mind on these two Ozments and forget family bibles and tradition for now and go strictly with documentation right now. We will forget about the Jr. and the Sr. part also and just go with what the records say. Lamar White of Utah has probably done more documented research on these early Ozments than anyone. Here is what he wrote in 1972: James b 1793 Richard b 1800 Alfred b 1805 We have not been able to find definite proof of the parents of these three brothers. They all listed their place of birth as North Carolina in the U.S. Census records. The only Ozment listed in North Carolina in the 1790 census was John Ozment. At that time he had one son under 16 years of age and a wife and three daughters. These children would all have been born before James, Richard, and Alfred. The first definite record we have of this family is in Wilson County, Tennessee, where James and Rebecca married sisters, Rebecca and Elizabeth Eddins (or Eddings), the daughters of William and Rebecca Chandler Eddins. There was a Rachel Ozment who married Robert Shannon in Wilson County in 1811 and Polly Ozment who married Hallam Sullivan in 1814. These could well be two of the sisters of James, Richard and Alfred. We hope with further research we will be able to identify the parents in North Carolina records. This is really the starting point on this branch for now. I hope to hear from the others, to add/detract/correct this. Sincerely, Lon Martin Amarillo, Texas

Dwight-- I am pretty sure that it couldn't have been Laura Louan (Ozment) BURNS who swore the affadavit on 11 June 1832, as she wasn't born until about 1849. > I have a copy (of a copy) of an affadavit sworn to 11 June 1832, State of Oklahoma, County of Okmulgee, by Laura Louan (Ozment) BURNS (a.k.a Leah Louisa OZMENT, a.k.a. Leah Louisiana OZMENT, a.k.a. "Lou"), d/o John Jasper and Margaret Elizabeth (Morgan) OZMENT. If the 1832 date isn't a typo, the woman was likely John Jasper's sister, Leah L. Ozment, b. 1798. My files show 2 William Anderson Ozments, but neither are the son of Samuel and Mary. My information came from Lon Martin and Loveta Ravize. William Anderson OZMENT, b.. 19 Nov 1865 in Possum Valley, Drew, AR, d. 27 Oct 1866, was a son of Rachael C. and James G. OZMENT. William Anderson OZMENT, b. about 1756, brother to James Henry and John Lafayette OZMENT; all sons of John A. Ozment b. 1733 in England and Rachel Eaton b. 1734 in England. Dwight-- It still says 1770-1770, which probably isn't what you meant to send. However, my question is not about John Lafayette, but about Nathaniel G. Ozment, child of Howard Ozment. You sent the descendants of William Osman earlier, and I noticed a discrepancy in the dates for Nathaniel. You had b. Feb 23, 1817, d. Mar 22,1829, and married Dec 29 1853. He can't be married that long after he is dead, so I expect the 1829 is a typo. What is the revised death date? About the Morgan sisters -- my cousin Rusty had surgery last Friday, and has not been up to doing any research. He is undergoing radiation treatment, and is probably both weak and sick. He had offered to look up on his Oklahoma CD, but that probably would add considerable delay to the process, so I plan to just go ahead and order the records and hope for the best. If it turns out to be an unrelated 7 year old, at least we will know. Hope you are having a wonderful evening! The sun is pretty here today, and it is about 73 degrees -- perfect by my standards. I found my Owen Lane who I think was Nancy Ann Lane's father living in the same area of Caroline County as the Richard Ozments and Samuel Ozment in 1783! woo hoo!! Look at these other familiar names. Hello Eleanor and Everyone, I think this list, and the new web site are great! Over the years I've collected some things and I will post some to the list now. Some of you have some of this already. I'm in hopes that something here will give someone a piece of the puzzle, or at least, some new ideas or clues. I am not (don't believe so anyway) an OZMENT descendant, my primary research is on the PAVEY family, I believe that Rebecca "Becky" PAVEY (aka PEAVY) was quite possibly a daughter of my ancestor, John PAVEY. John PAVEY was on the 1790 Caroline Co, MD census. His wife, more than likely, was Mary ANDERSON. These ANDERSONs were connected to the Nicolites, and many migrated to Guilford Co, NC by 1800. SULLIVAN/SULLIVANE Many were also Nicolites who migrated from Caroline Co, MD area to Guilford Co, NC by 1800. Sullivan Nicolite Marriages: 1) Daniel Sullavane - Marget (Margaret) MELVIN, both of Dorchester, 1/28/1770 (Is said to have migrated to NC) 2) Owen Sullivan - Ester STANTON, both of Caroline, 12/26/1792 3) Owen Sullivan - Elizabeth FIDAMON, both of Caroline, 12/10/1800 Nicolite Births (all children of Daniel & Marget/Margaret SULAVANE/SULLIVAN): 1) Joseph, b: 1/13/1771 (may have been the father of Fletcher Sullivan...NC) 2) Owen, b: 3/4/1772 3) Daniel, b: 11/11/1773 4) Mary, b: 12/27/1775 5) Sarah, b: 1/7/1777 6) Margaret, b: 11/24/1779 7) Isaac, b: 10/29/1781 8) John, b: 12/24/1783 I have read where the original records of the Nicolites are housed in the MD. State Archives. I believe someone once suggested that he MAY have been the Richard who was married to Rachel RASHFIELD and may have died within a year (will prob. May, 1817) of their marriage. Has this ever been proven/dis-proven? *********************************** Guilford Co, NC Will Abstracts - Unrecorded Wills, pg. 145 ... However, it is way too soon to be absolute, but if I am correct, he was another Anderson whose family was connected to the Nicolites and he may have migrated a little later. >From what we are finding out, there were 2 different ANDERSON families in Guilford Co at the same time. One, previously mentioned, from the Eastern Shore, the other, Presbyterians, from VA. I also have the information on Will Abstracts of Richard Ozment (1809-1817) and Samuel Ozment (1819) and Real Estate Conveyances (Guilford Co) of Richard to Samuel Ozment (1808); Richard, Sr to Thomas Ozment (1808); Richard Ozment to Pleasant T. Campbell (1822) if anyone would care to have that information. Please let me know. Marsha McWilliams
Dear all, Thought I had proof-read my last message, but instead I "goof-read". The birth date for John Lafayette OZMENT, para. two, should be 1770-1770. Sorry about that. --Dwight
Hi,Eleanor and all ! I will give you what I have on Martha ARDENT, wife of James Henry OZMENT, Sr., and other related. But let me back up...... A little more background here: My files show John Jasper OZMENT (b. 1798, NC) as the s/o John Lafayette OZMENT (b.abt. 1798, NC) and Martha Frances JACKSON (b. abt. 1775, prob. NC). John Jasper OZMENT was married twice previously - to Anna Mae MORGAN (Margaret's sister) and Isabel(le) MURCHISON. My files also reflect John Lafayette OZMENT was a son of James Henry OZMENT, Sr. and Martha ARDENT/ARDEN (b. 1757-1760, NC). This is where it gets a little confusing. I do not have William Anderson OZMENT as another son of James Henry OZMENT, Sr., but have him as a son of Samuel and Mary (unknown) OZMENT. Please correct me if I'm wrong or have recycled another error. I also show your Alfred (married Nancy Ann LANE) as another son of James Henry OZMENT, Sr. If any of our Ozment family researchers have additional/corrected info on William Anderson OZMENT and his connection to James Henry OZMENT, Sr and/or Samuel OZMENT, please help resolve this and other questions posed by Eleanor. Back to the affadavit as excerpted: Laura Louan (Ozment) BURNS," ....the deponent says that the said grand-parents (?) above mentioned (Margaret Elizabeth Ozment MORGAN and Cora Ann FRAZIER, maternal grandmothers) are to be found as some of the early Cherokee Indians who were routed from North Carolina, to the country west of the Mississippi, and that their numbers are to be found on old Cherokee rolls of the corresponding date, and that she is a direct descendant of them, .....". The wording and exclamation in parenthesis are mine. There is no reference in this affadavit to Martha ARDENT/ARDEN, her paternal great-grandmother. An appended note to this affadavit, written by Charles W. Johnson and excerpted here, states as follows: "This is a copy of an affadavit prepared on the above mentioned date by Hue D. Miller, an attorney of Beggs, Oklahoma, The exact purpose of this instrument is not known at this time. It evidently was prepared for the purpose of establishing definite relationship and dependancy from some member or members of the Cherokee tribe of Indians when they resided still in the ancestral domain which is now North Carolina. Copied February, 1940 from affadavit loaned by Pink Burns, of Mounds, Okla. and his sister, Mrs. ada (Burns) McDaniel who was first married to a man named Settle, her address is now Sand Springs, Okla, General Delivery. CWJ" A copy of the affadavit was submitted to me by Evelyn Johnson Thoes, d/o Charles Warner Johnson (s/o Charles Edwin and Almedia Ozment Johnson) for use in my Ozment family research. The original document is owned by Evelyn. It is coincidental that Caroline Miller and I are presently researching the western Cherokee records for a varified connection with the MORGAN family. We believe we have found that connection on two Cherokee Rolls. Keep tuned. My files further reflect Martha ARDENT/ARDEN (the great-grandmother of Leah Louisa Ozment BURNS) was the daughter of Unknown ARDENT/ARDEN, brother of a "Chief Keota/Keoto". This information was provided by Arthur Jolley in a letter and taped interview by Lamar White which I,m sure all of us have read or heard before. One of our CA cousins advised he has seen an early reference to a Chief Keota/Keoto in one of the north-central plains states. Not confirmed, still researching. The "story" goes that Chief Keota/Keoto had a daughter named Elizabeth "White Cloud" who married a William "Billy" EDDINS/EDDINGS (I am sure our Eddins/Eddings kin can expand/resolve/denounce this bit of their family history). This is a very interesting theory since the Ozments and Eddins/Eddings are related by marriage. Eleanor - I hope I have provided info that will help resolve some of your questions. I will study the other questions some more and get back to you if I find anything of value. Then again, I may have totally confused the issue. I have said more than I originally intended, but maybe I've stirred up the "think tank"and this may lead to determining the true proginitor(s) of the OZMENT/OSMENT/OSMOND family tree. Also, I too would like to see original Bible records (such as the Eula Mae Harris family bible) and other documentation. As I've said before ( and I know you all get tired of hearing it) let's ALL make an effort to co-ordinate our research, do some serious fact-finding, help eliminate those "recycled errors"--yes, I make them too-- and preserve the great heritage we have to pass on to OUR descendants. 'nuff said. Best regards, Dwight Wesley Ozment 5:25 P.M. EDT Mon. 8/24/99
If I may I'd like to chime in with my part of the Ozment family line, this is a new found line for me, very exciting. My great-grandmother: Brunette Clementine King, born: 15 Mar 1859 in Hardeman County, TN. Brunette King is the daughter of Jesse King (born abt. 1835 Hardeman County, TN) and Rachail E. A. Ozment (born per census April 1843 Hardeman County, TN). Jesse and Rachail married on 28 Sept 1859. Jesse King died in the Civil War and Rachail remarried William Henry Herndon on 16 Apr 1868 in Hardeman County, TN. Rachail E. A. Ozment King Herndon is the daughter of Samuel Ozment (born abt. 1800 in NC) and Nancy Waddle (born abt. 1800 in TN). That's as far as I have gone with census records and marriage records. As I mentioned this is a new family line for me. My great-grandmother, Brunette Clementine King, died when my grandmother was only 3. As a result, my grandmother was raised by a foster family. We've spent many years searching for her family and are so glad to make this connection. Will gladly share copies of what I have.
Hi everyone! I have been busy posting to various lists trying to get in touch with other Ozment researchers. Hopefully, some of them will join the list. I now have a question for you. I was given data that my Alfred OZMENT was the son of James H. OZMENT, Sr, b ca 1755 and a Martha ARDENT. Supposedly, Martha was an Indian. This is something I have never been able to verify. Does anyone have documentation of this. Along with this data, came the information that two other sons of James H OZMENT, Sr were William Anderson OZMENT and John Lafayette OZMENT. Supposedly this information came from a Bible record. Again, I have never seen this record. Has anyone on this list seen it? Could this John Lafayette OZMENT be the John OZMENT found in 1790 in Guilford Co, NC who later moved to Wilson Co, TN? I originally had Alfred as a son of this John but apparently that was wrong. Were Eli and Green B. (Greenberry) OZMENT the sons of this John? Who did this John marry? What happened to William Anderson OZMENT, b ca 1757? I know that the name Anderson is carried down several Ozment generations. But I have nothing on him other than a possible birthdate. My info before Alfred has so many gaps and holes. Everything came from other researchers and I have not been able to document anything. Can anyone help? I really want to put this descendancy on the Ozment webpage but would like to feel better about it before I do. Eleanor
Hi, Bill You wrote to me July 26, 1999 inquiring about James Allen LANE who married Mary Jane OZMENT and possible connection to Samuel LANE. Unfortunately, I was unable to help you, but recent messages caught my attention and I thought of your inquiry. Are you subscribed to TNOZMENT/LANE web pages hosted by Nancy Goodman and the new OZMENT mailing list and boards hosted by Eleanor Colson? Mary Jane OZMENT is one of Nancy's husband's ancestors. There have been recent (8/20/99) inquiries and responses about these Lane/Ozment families on both web sites. If this info is beneficial to your research, let me know and I will either relay the messages to you or you can contact the webmasters, subscribe (if not already subscribed) and get online with two of the best genealogy pages around. --Dwight W. Hi, Eleanor Inquiry #1- My records show Daniel Jasper Ozment (b. 1832, prob. Wilson Co., TN, son of James Thomas Ozment and Mary Bland) married Sarah Brooks Jones ca 1853. My records also reflect Sarah was first married to Thomas Jasper Ozment (Thomas J. Ozment to Sarah B. Jones 17 September 1849, Davidson Co., TN). I do not have a copy of the marriage certificates for either Daniel or Thomas, but these documents or records would confirm. Also, if you have not already done so, check the 1860 census, Rutherford Co., TN (M-653, Roll 1271, page 5A, CD 1, PO Lavergne, dwelling 60, family 57, lines 13-18). This lists given name only as "Jasper", but age (28) would be right for David Jasper Ozment. Inquiry #2- This James Ozment ( age 35 in 1860 census, Drew Co., AR) "might" be a son of Alfred and Nancy (Lane) Ozment. They were married 21 April 1823. Only a guess. I have a John Ozment listed as one of their children, but no James. Maybe some of our other Ozment researchers have the answer to your question. Dwight W. Ozment 9:40 P.M. EDT Fri. 8/20/99

That is very strange that both had the middle name of Jasper. Eleanor
