    1. [OZMENT] Richard S. or D. Ozment (1841-1858/1925)
    2. Ivan and Caroline Miller
    3. Information from Lon Martin said Richard S. Ozment (1841-1858) married Sarah Miller. Richard is the son of Richard Ozment and Rebecca Eddins. I just found a Web page about descendents of Jacob Miller, at http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/m/i/l/Stephen-Kent-Miller/GENE6-0005.ht ml which has Sarah Miller's ancestry. It also gives slightly different information for her husband Richard. It says Sarah "married Richard D. Ozment October 11, 1865 in Saline County, IL by W. D. Russell, son of Richard Ozment and Rebecca Eddins. He was born Mrch 04, 1841 and died September 06, 1925 in Saline County Illinois." This death date is a LOT later than 1858! But it seems to be the same person. Children (all born after 1858) are listed as: Mary Jane Ozment, b. May 1867 Marshall Ozment, b. October 04, 1868 Sina Ozment, b. March 21, 1870 Ella Ozment, b. September 1879 Columbus C. Ozment, b. August 1881 Jr. Richard D. Ozment, b. January 1887 Carles B. Ozment, b. August 12, 1887 It looks like there are problems with those last 2 birthdates, but the overall impact is that Richard, husband of Sarah Miller, didn't die in 1858. Maybe this will help solve some mysteries?? Caroline Miller mailto:milleriw@mbay.net

Here is the expert (as far as I am concerned) for that side of the family, Stanley G. Davis who lives in Illinois. He got his information from the Fanny Ozment Reynold's book plus he took it further with his own research and brought it more up to date. I don't recall if Stanley is on the list or not. He is always interested in the Ozments. Good to hear from you. As you can imagine it differs a little from yours also. It is hard to get to the root of our Ozment families. I always stand to be corrected. Thank you. If you need or want any more information on this side of the family let me know. We can always compare. I have Stanley's information now in the computer. He has so graciously given to me. He wants all credit given to Fanny. Sincerely, Lon 1. RICHARD D.2 OZMENT (RICHARD D .(S.)1) was born March 04, 1841 in Wilson Co., Tennessee, and died September 06, 1925 in Saline Co. Illinois. He married SARAH J. MILLER October 11, 1865 in Saline Co. 3. Good Morning Everyone, I just received this information from an Anderson "Cousin" (the Andersons married into my PAVEYs, just like the OZMENTs did, NC, early 1800's.) We keep an eye out for each other's surnames. Don't know if you all had this information or not, but it's best to be safe than sorry <g>. Marsha in snowy Effingham. Hi Marsha: I do not know if you are still interested in Ozments but I am sending you some information on them. I was looking at maps from the Cannon Co., TN homepage of the USGENWEB and I ran across four Osment listings i.e. Osment Chapel, Osment Cemetery, Osment Chapel (Historical), and Ozments Mill (Historical). All of these listings are in the Short Mountain Area. Go to the Cannon Co., TN Homepage on the USGENWEB ; go to "Names & Maps of Hundreds of Cannon Co, Things" and click; go to Ozment listings. I also found Osment Chapel in one of my reference books which says:"Osment Chapel Methodist Church was located two miles south of the Gap of the Mountain, on the Highland Rim. it was organized in 1874. Its first building was log. William Milton Osment donated land and the logs. This building was used until 1905, when it was condemned. A new building was erected about 1920-1923, but was burned sometime in the 1940s." I hope this helps to pin this family down a little. Regards, Brian

    3. Hi,Cousins: Re: Ozment Notes/Talbot County Message #1, Vol. 99 : Issue 21 (1 Nov 1999) I have Priscilla Ozment (married Joseph Spence, May 10, 1814) in my database and list her mother as Lydia Ozment (Maryland Marriage Clues, page 56). Father unknown. The 1800 census, Talbot Co., MD, M-32, Roll 12, page 72 reflects Lydia Ozment as "Head of Household" with 2 females "under 10" that would have been about "right age" to marry in 1814. Could one of these possibly be daughter Priscilla? Also, interesting to note on same page 72 are listed Thomas Ozment and Samuel Bowman. Possible connections to Thomas Ozment and Sarah Bowman noted in Frank's inquiry?? I have a Sarah Ellen Ozment (b. 1817, MD: d.before Mar. 14, 1899, Easton, Talbot Co.,MD). Married 30 Nov 1837, Talbot Co.,MD to Thomas "J". Clark. Parents of Sarah were Jonathan and Lucy (Bromwell) Ozment, both from Talbot Co. Are these the same folks Frank found in "Talbot County Marriages, 1840-1867"???Source is OLD MARYLAND FAMILIES (an article by Henrietta Bromwell from MD Historical Society). It seems I have posed more questions than I have answered. Maybe some of our other cousins can provide the correct answers. Dwight W. Ozment 10:20 P.M. EST Mon 11/8/99 Richmond, VA

    3. Hi Cousins, I was going through some notes I took from a trip to the MD Archives and found some threads that I cannot match in my families. Perhaps you have data that can help. The source for this data is Md. Archives, Talbot County Marriages, 1840-1867. Here are the folks I cannot tie in: 1. Thomas Ozmont m. Sarah Bowman, July 9, 1805. Minister was T. W. Fountain 2. Joseph Spence m. Priscilla Ozmont, May 10, 1814. 3. John Kirby m. Henrietta Ozmont, Dec 28, 1824. Minister T. W. Fountain 4. Thomas F. Clark m. Sarah C, Ozmont, Nov 30, 1827, Minister W. Potts. Note: I have a Sarah C. Ozmont in my data base, but she wasn't born until 1827 or so. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Frank Frank and Chris Courtney Moncks Corner, SC

    3. I hope the following mentions of Ozments in Wilson Co., TN are of interest to somebody. Caroline Miller >From "The Goodspeed Histories of Maury, Williamson, Rutherford, Wilson, Bedford, Marshall Counties of Tennessee", originally published in 1886; reprinted 1971 by Woodward and Stinson Printing Co., Columbia, TN. These are all from Wilson County: p. 1087: Charles H. Cook, farmer, was born in Davidson County, Tenn., March 29, 1826, and is one of six children born to James H. and Jane (Hope) Cook. The father was born in NC in 1779, and was of English-German lineage. He was a mechanic by trade, and was elected constable and served in that capacity for several years. He was also magistrae, and held that office up to the time of his death in 1884. The mothr was born in 1800 and was of English lineage; she died in 1866. Our subject was reared in Davison Co., TN and learned the plasterer's trade, which he followed successfully for 20 years. In 1850 he wed Rachel A. Caraver, who was born in June 1824, daughter of Isaac Carver. Charles has been engaged in the shoe business, the blacksmithing and wheelwrighting and the saw and grist-mill business since 1861. In 1865 he wedded Cleopatra OZMENT, who was born Aug. 5, 1834, and is the daughter of James H. and Martha OZMENT. This union resulted in the birth of these children: Mary J., Seleta Ann, Zuella S., James E., Martha L., Oliver C. K., Evalena, Green G. and D. Lillian. Mr. Cook is a Democrat, and he and his wife are members of the Missionary Baptist Church; he is also a member of the I.O.O.F. In 1875-76 he was elected constable, and filled that office in an able and satisfactory manner. p. 1111: J. Harrison OZMENT, an enterprising farmer, was born Sept. 11, 1853 in Wilson Co., TN, and is one of 3 children born to John C. and Amanda (Wright) OZMENT. The father was born Oct. 5,1833, in Wilson Co. and is a farmer by occupation. He is the owner of about 100 acres of land, and is now living in the Twenty-fifth District. The mother was born Mar. 4, 1834, and is the daughter of Hollis and Elizabeth Wright. Our subject was raised in Wilson Co. and received a practical educaion in the county schools. In 1877 he began farming for himself, and Dec. 20, 1876 Emma A. Clemmons became his wife. She is the daughter of William L. and Elizabeth (Carver) Clemmons, and was born Mar. 12, 1857. Mr and Mrs Ozment are the parents of 3 children: Clara, Lenna and Horace. Mr. Ozment has a fine farm of 200 acres in the Twenty-fifth District, and is a gentleman in every respect. He is a Democrat in policits, and a consistent member of the Missionary Baptist Church. Mrs. Ozment is a member of the Christian Church. >From the history of the settlement of Wilson County (p. 841-2): >From 1799 the settlement of the county was rapid. The lands lying on the waters of the various creeks being the richer and easier of cultivation were naturally the first settled, and hence in giving the following list of names of the early settlers, they have been grouped into creek neighborhoods. ... 1. [OZMENT] New Medical Journal
    2. Chris and Frank
    3. Hi folks. Today I completed transcribing the pocket journal of Dr. John DuHadway of Caroline County. The journal contains names and some treatments of over 388 individuals in the area of Fowling Creek, Caroline County, MD. I have contacted Adina Dyer to have the journal posted on the Caroline County web site. If you have email that can accept attachments, I will be glad to send the data to you in an Excel file. The journal is really like a mini-census of that area taken between 1893 and 1907 and it dovetails with the one I already transcribed and posted to the Caroline County site. Some interesting things: 1. The phrase "Visited wife in confinement" indicates a pregnant female about to deliver. 2. There are some birth announcements in the ledger that are included in remarks columns including one mention of twins. 3. The first mention of a vaccination was in 1904. 4. The first mention of a hospital was in 1905. 5. People did not use a doctor the way we do. They didn't call the Doctor unless it was truly needed. As an example, there are several listing of Dr. Duhadway responding to a "wife in confinement" followed by the indication of a birth. More often, the same visit results in a separate entry, a couple of days later, indicating a visit to a child or a baby. Apparently the women chose to deliver without a doctor. Several well known names that have been appearing in the Lower Delmarva list are in the ledger. Good luck, Frank Frank and Chris Courtney Moncks Corner, SC

    3. Dwight and Evelyn I solved a mystery today, so if you are keeping track of my group of Ozmons, or whatever spelling you choose, this updated my immediate grandfather's info. thanks, Frank Frank and Chris Courtney Moncks Corner, SC ----- Original Message ----- From: Chris and Frank To: Kay in CA ; Linda Harrison ; Judy Stell Cc: Judy Boie ; Bob and Kate Ellenwood Sent: Friday, September 17, 1999 3:11 PM Subject: Hi Cousins, STURGIS Mystery solved Judy, Linda, Kay, Great news, cousins, the Sturgis mystery is solved. Now maybe we can help each other with the rest. The good news is that I received today Carroll Sturgis' death certificate and it solves a bunch of the mystery. Here is the data from the certificate: Carroll Chase Sturgis was born in Cape Charles, VA on April 17, 1882 and died in East Whiteland, Chester County PA on Jan 24, 1942 of a heart attack. He owned a restaurant and is interred at Mt. Moriah Cemetery, Philadelphia, PA. His father was LITTLETON STURGIS and his mother was ELLA MARSHALL, both born in VA. His wife at the time of death was Mary P. Sturgis. So where does that leave us: 1. The death card I have on L.H. Sturgis tells me that this is Carroll's father. L. H. Sturgis, d.May 2, 1906 according to my baby book in Cape Charles, VA. 2. The photo of Robert H and Elizabeth Marshal are Carroll's grandparents, whose daughter was Ella Marshall. 3. The Mae Sturgis who signed the death telegram I have is Mary P Sturgis, Carroll's wife at the time of death. 4. I will make a bet that if we can find a death record on F. J. Schmoele in Norfolk, we will find that his wife was probably one of Carroll's sisters. Now, how does this track? Can't wait to hear from you. Frank Frank and Chris Courtney Moncks Corner, SC

    1. [OZMENT] Final Floyd Update from SC
    2. Chris and Frank
    3. Hi all, Its 0730 here in SC the day after Floyd. I have already taken a panel off of the back slider so that we can go out directly to the deck. We really came out well, only a couple of loose shingles and no trees down although there is a lot of debris in the yard in terms of small branches, limbs, etc. No trees down, though. The weather this AM is overcast, no rain, temperature about 65 and the barometer rose to 29.53. Its over for us. I finally went to be last night a bit after midnight after I watched the barometer and made sure that it was steady and not continuing to fall. The animals stayed right next to us while we were awake; they knew something was up and the dogs stayed real close. Izzy the cat stayed in an easy chair in our bedroom the entire time. We have a 6X12 foot chain link kennel in the living room where we put the puppies after they were born (Too darn hot in SC to put them anywhere outside where there is no A/C). She slept on the floor next to the kennel for a while to keep the young pups happy and to get them to sleep, then she came to bed. I can't thank all of you enough for the wonderful emails. Not only did reading them give us something to do besides hearing about the storm, it also made us appreciate our family and net friends even more. thanks to all. Chris doesn't want me to pull the panels off the other windows, yet. We want to wait and see what Hurricane Gert does. Thanks again., Frank Frank and Chris Courtney Moncks Corner, SC

    1. [OZMENT] Floyd Update
    2. Chris and Frank
    3. Its now 10:30 PM and Chris is asleep on the couch, Charter is next to her on the sofa, Cruiser and the puppies Chip and Junior are asleep at her feet. We have dodged a bullet. The wind is still howling, but I pity the folks in North Carolina who are going to get nailed the way I thought we were going to get nailed. Winds in Charleston are variable from next to nothing to 70 mph. Here in Moncks Corner it is howling. Mostly what we are hearing is the wind trying to get behind the flakeboard we put up over the windows. Its raining like h..., too. Barometer now is steady at 29.22 in/Hg. We have weathered pretty much the most that we are going to get. Charleston is furious at the state government over their inability to get folks out of here. There are tons of horror stories of folks trying to leave Charleston and being on the highway for over 8 hours just to get to the Summerville exits which is only 15 miles away up Interstate 26. So far damage here is minimal; power lines down, awnings gone, and few trees down. One interview on TV a few minutes ago was a young single woman near west of the Ashley who was in her mobile home with her two cats when a live oak fell on them. All okay, including the kittens. Bottom line for us, I am going to go to bed. I'll update again in the morning when we find out what really transpired. To everyone: Thanks for the outpouring of emails. I have loved hearing from folks I don't know. The genealogy community is wonderful and thanks to the Ozment -l and the Lower-Delmarva -l for asking about us. You folks are just super. Maybe tomorrow, I can get back to genealogy. Thanks, and good night, Frank. Frank and Chris Courtney Moncks Corner, SC

    3. Time for another update. Lights are beginning to flicker. Winds now steady 55 and gusting to over 60. Light damage in town so far, branches down, some awnings gone. So far, we are okay, snug as can be. Barometer keeps falling, now in 29.27. Our friend Dean has a few old timers over at his house in town and they are picking banjo's, singing, and tasting the Crown Royal. Rain now is over 4 inches since this morning and more to come. All the cars are now indoors, and a mandatory curfew begins at 7pm EST and last until 7AM tomorrow. Floyd track has appeared to spare us the center of the storm, but it is really howling. For Brent and Melissa, you built a great house. Not even an air leak at this point. As I crossed over the Tail Race Canal 15 minutes ago, some of the boats are starting to drag anchor. Several are now tied up to the Dock Restaurant (old Navy Pier) and seem to be faring okay. The worst is still to come. We still have electric so Chris is making dinner (pork chops, gravy and taters). Hope the electric lasts long enough for us to eat it. Well, maybe another update later tonight. Best to all. Later. Frank Frank and Chris Courtney Moncks Corner, SC

    1. [OZMENT] Fw: Floyd Update from SC

    3. Hi folks and relatives, kin, etc. Here we are in beautiful South Carolina awaiting the arrival of Floyd. I thought of my fellow researchers and thought you might like to see status reports. I'll send them periodically. Best to all, Frank Frank and Chris Courtney Moncks Corner, SC Sent: Wednesday, September 15, 1999 2:48 PM Subject: Floyd Update from SC Well, I finally closed off the last piece of the house an hour ago. I had left one sheet of particle board off half of the sliding glass door to our deck. Now, the only way in or out of the house if via the side door of the Garage on the west side of the house. Chris's car is in the workshop on the east end of our property (along with the Chief of Police's boat) and my truck will go into the garage attached to the house shortly. ` Winds are now gust here to about 30, heavy rain and blowing rain. Barometer is falling rather quickly and is now 29.45 in/Hg. I will be going over to Jimmy Sanders house shortly. Jimmy and Gloria are in the 70s and live directly on the Cooper River which borders Moncks Corner to the east. Yesterday, I tied Jimmy's 41 foot Gibson houseboat to three trees on the shore using 5/8 inch nylon yachtbraid. I want to see what the water is doing and how the boat is holding up. The Rail Race Canal, which connect the Cooper River to the locks at Lake Moultrie is about 100 feet wide and there are a sizeable number of sail and power boats anchored. They have come up from Charleston. One pair of fools are rafted up. I bet they party tonight. Local humor from downtown Moncks Corner where I just came from. Written in black spray paint on a boarded up storefront: "Hurricane Floyd, kiss my grits!" "Country folk will survive, Moncks Corner pride!" More later on.
