Eleanor, The "V. OZMENT" listed in 1850 census (town of Rusk, Cherokee Co. TX) apparently is Varnum OZMENT who lived in Purdy, McVairy Co., TN before moving to TX by 1850. "James" apparently is James Wisdom OZMENT, his son, who lived in Palestine, Anderson Co., TX later. SOURCE: Evelyn J.Thoes. I also have a note in my database for Varnum OZMENT which says he "lived in Shelby Co., IN about 1820-1835 (see Land Patent Report, Document #20555, 40 acres, AUTH: April 24, 1820, Cash entry sale SIGNATURE DATE: October 28, 1835". I have three (3) marriages for Varnum. Regards, Dwight W. Ozment
This is a question for the Cooke Co, TX Ozment researchers or anyone else who might know. I found indications of a Samuel Ozment dying in Cooke County before 1860 with Byron Yarborough as administrator, Box 20. Found this on the Cooke Co Genweb site listed under probate records. Then I find Byron Yarborough married to a Calafornia Ozment on 05 Oct 1855 in Cooke Co, TX. I have a feeling that Calafornia was the widow of Samuel. They are then found on the 1860 Lampasas Co, TX census. Calafornia is now age 33, birthplace unknown. There are two Ozment (spelled Osment here) children, Savanah, age 12, born MS and Martha, age 10, born TX. So who is this Samuel, Calafornia, Savanah and Martha. Could Samuel be a son of John Lafayette Ozment? Eleanor Colson
I found something interesting today. I checked out the V. Ozment on the 1850 Cherokee Co, TX census among others. There is a Varnum Ozment who came into Galveston in 1839. I had assumed that he was an immigrant from Europe and that he was a different line. However, the V. Ozment found in 1850 Cherokee Co, TX who I assume is the same one was born in North Carolina!! He must have made the trek by sea to save time. He is listed in a hotel, age 34, and a merchant. He has a boy living with him who I assume is his son, James, age 7, born in Tennessee!! Ok, now who is this?? I believe I saw a Varnum Ozment on the census records for 1870 Missouri. So I guess I'll have to check that out too. Any ideas? Eleanor Colson
Can anyone help Sandy? She is not a memeber of this list as far as I know so please direct any answers directly to her at sragets@netzero.net. I would also like to know the answer too as this looks to be one of our loose ends in NC. Eleanor <<The information I have is from an Ozment cousin. She says John S. Ozment and Mary Ella Sawyer were married in Charlotte, Mecklenburg, NC. My side of the family were far removed in distance, so the information I have from my older relatives differs, but I trust her info more than mine. I have lost contact with her (rats!) and she was my only connection. She also has a John Ozment and Mary Collier married about the same time and is unsure what maiden name to go with for Mary Ella. They would have been married in the 1870's. Children to this union were: Albert Fletcher Grace Nell William Daisy b 1878 Annie Laura b 1880 Bessie Mae (my g grandmother)b1888 Walter S. b1894 Interested in any Ozment information you could share. Like the general origins and history of this family in NC. Do you suspect a connection? Thanks for your help, Sandy Ragets

Posted on: OZMENT Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/surnames/o/z/OZMENT/queries/14 Surname: Ozment, Hiett, Davis, Capps ------------------------- I am looking for information on the ancestors of James Thomas Ozment, born 1840, Davidson Co. TN. Wife Catherine Hiett.Son Thomas Edward Ozment, born 1867, Benton, KY. Wife Nancy Annie Elizabeth Davis. James Thomas' father may be Thomas C. Ozment born 1821 on North Carolina whose wife was Jane J. Vaughn. I can find no record of Thomas C. or Jane J. in North Carolina records.
Dear group, I made a mistake I hope all will correct for their records. I got the following email from John: 31 Oct. 2000 Dear Lon, It seemed as though you were saying that I said that 1737 Richard MAY have had a brother Thomas who married Rachel Sylvester. No, no, no. 1737 Richard had an uncle, Thomas (ca. 1724 - 1758). Thomas had a son, Thomas Jr. (b. 1750). Thus 1737 Richard and 1750 Thomas Jr. were first cousins. Additionally, I read somewhere that Rachel, the wife of Thomas Jr., was a widow of Bradbury Sylvester, hence Sylvester was not her maiden name. I hope this clarifies some. Yours truly, John Ozment
This was written by the late Lamar White of Utah and Lynn White of Arkansas. They did an admirable job. This is used with permission: James enlisted, as a private in the 1st Regiment of Tennessee Volunteers (Col. Hall) Company Commander was Capt. Henry L. Douglas. He was mustered into service at Nashville, Tennessee on or about December 1812 for six months and was honorably discharged at Columbia, TN in May 1813. He was later mustered into service at Nashville on September 1, 1814, Col. Edward Bradley's Regiment of Tennessee Volunteers, Capt. H. L. Douglas' Company for the term of six months and honorably discharged at or near Colberts Ferry, on the Tennessee River on the last of April 1815. He fought with General Andrew Jackson at New Orleans. He was one of the Tennessee and Kentucky riflemen that on January 8, 1815 so decimated the ranks of the veteran British troops as to put them to route. Arthur Jolley's family owns the sword that James H. Ozment carried in that memorable battle. On July 16.1817, James H. Ozment and Elizabeth Eddings were married Lebanon, Wilson County Tennessee--James Ozment (possibly his father) and William N. Swain as Surety. We find no record of James and Elizabeth in the 1820 Census in Tennessee, but according to the later census record of 1850, all of their children up to 1828 were born in Tennessee. Joseph C. Ozment was born in Arkansas in 1830, and we find the family listed in the 1830 Census of Union county, Arkansas. He may have been influenced to move to the Arkansas Territory by those he was in the service with, as it is well known that Hugh Bradley, a Captain in the Militia (TN), that fought in the Battle of New Orleans, learned of the Arkansas Territory by other soldiers, fur traders, trappers, etc. He was probably related to the Edward Bradley that James H. Ozment served with in New Orleans. Hugh Bradley came to Arkansas following the end of the War of 1812, about 1815. By 1821 he settled in Lafayette County near Lewisville, but later he, along with Hugh Pennington, and Aaron Johnson had to leave their homesteads because of high spring flooding which destroyed their farms. Near Camden, they crossed the Ouachita River and moved very near the Saline River to where present day Warren is situated. Our James H. Ozment could have possibly followed this same route to the Pennington settlement, since he is found there "Prior to 1830" as noted in the history of Bradley County. Also from that history is the following notation: "Flat boats were hand-poled or dragged up river through the often present shallows of the Ouachita and Saline Rivers about seven months of the year, loaded with the goods, boxes and bales necessary for the life support of these first early settlers." Sincerely, Lon

For the record, according to Ken Griffith, a descendant of Richard, says all of the following: that Richard Ozment was born in Ireland about 1740 and is not sure when he came to America, but his oldest son Samuel was born in Maryland about 1764. Richard's other children included Betsy, John, Nelly, James, Sarah, and Thomas. I'm not sure of their birth order. Thomas is listed in later records as being born about 1771 also in Maryland. >From an email of John Ozment of California: Richard (1737, MD - 1817, NC) and Rachel Ozment (1735/37, MD - by 1809, NC), sold their Caroline Co., MD, land in 1786 and bought land in Guilford Co., NC, beginning in 1787. However, I can tell you that in Feb. 1811, John Ozment (1763, MD - 1842+, TN) bought land in Wilson Co., TN, having left Guilford Co., NC. He had moved to NC in 1786 with his parents (Richard and Rachel) and siblings from Maryland. John's oldest son, Eli (1786, NC -1850+, TN) was born in NC. John's parents, Richard (1737, MD - 1817, NC) and Rachel Ozment (1735/37, MD - by 1809, NC), sold their Caroline Co., MD, land in 1786 and bought land in Guilford Co., NC, beginning in 1787. Richard MAY have had a brother named Thomas. For marriage records in Caroline County, Maryland has a Thomas marrying Rachel Sylvester on 26 November 1778. We know that Richard married on 16 July 1778 in Caroline County by the same records. Confused? See what is happening? We are getting contradictory evidence from different sources but where is their proof? We are going to have to forego the story-telling and go by the record like John Ozment, Evelyn, Dwight, and several others have always done. Let's forget about coming over with Lafayette, marrying Indian princesses, and teaching school without an education. Every serious researcher I know knows that Billy Eddins married Rebecca Chandler. Her name was not White Fawn and she was not kin to Chief Speaking Bull/Keoto. The Chandler/Eddins line is well documented and there are some wonderful websites out there telling their story. Sincerely, Lon
Hello, everyone I received this information from Howard Ozment of Austin, Texas a few years ago and he gave me permission to pass it along back then and I did send it to several. We have so many new people on the list, I thought I would share it again: Our name is English with a Scandinavian base. It means "Man of God." A professor of the University of Texas researched it. He is deeply into the origin of European names. [This also goes along with what my grandfather Ozment told us that it was Swedish. LM] Also, from Howard in the same email: Our name derived from two brothers who came to the colonies in the 1700's from England. The two brothers, Richard and Samuel are the source of the Ozment clan. They arrived at Baltimore, Maryland as the port of entry into this country. We find a Richard Ozment, Samuel Ozment, and Richard Ozment, Jr. in Choptank Hundred, Caroline County, Maryland, in the 1778 Continental Census. We also find a Richard Ozment in Somerset County, Maryland, page 123 taking an oath of allegiance in 1778. There is still in existence to this day, Choptank, Caroline County, Maryland. Ok. All the above is from Howard. Controversy? In genealogy records that the Mormon Church keep, for Maryland we have some of the following Ozments listed: Richard Ozment married Elizabeth Lecompte 16 July 1778 Caroline County Thomas Ozment married Rachel Sylvester 26 November 1778 Caroline County Sarah Ellen Ozment born about 1810 Talbot County Samuel C. Ozman married Mary Ann Willoughby 10 December 1827 Caroline Co. Rebecca Ozment to Richard Clarke 23 December 1837 Talbot County. While I am at it I will list what I have from Tennessee Records by Acklen V.2 Hallem Sullivan m. Polly Ozment 14 September 1816; surety James Osment James Ozment m. Elizabeth Eddins 16 July 1817 [Lynn White says Lebanon, Wilson County, Tennessee--James Osment (possibly his father) and William N. Swain as Surety.] Richard Ozment m. W.O. Ozment, who was one of Alfred's sons, had married in Tennessee and remained behind when the family moved to Arkansas came later, sometime prior to 1850, overland, crossing the Mississippi River at Gaines Landing. W.O. Ozment served in the Civil War being in the command of Owens Battery, Arkansas Artillery, CSA. He is buried in the 16th Section Cemetery. Mr. Arthur Jolley and his wife are enjoying life in their retirement on a fine one hundred and eighty acres of loamy valley soil. They have tenants and the old plantation still hangs near the home. Jolley has been a farmer, school teacher, Justice of the Peace and game warden. He is one who enjoys reminiscing in family folklore and proud of his family heritage. He enjoys telling of his great grandfather James H. Ozment being with General Jackson at New Orleans. James H. Ozment was one of the Tennessee & Kentucky rifle men that on January 8, 1815 so decimated the ranks of the veteran British troops as to put them to route. Mr. Jolley is the proud owner of his great grandfather's sword that he carried in that memorable battle and he is shown holding it in the picture on the opposite page. The older Ozments were all Masons and dedicated church workers being foremost in civic and community affairs. Margaret Ozment (Arthur Jolley's mother) gave the ground for the Ozment school house, church, and cemetery, which comprises several acres. The Ozment name has just about disappeared from Drew County, but there are many, many descendants of these two brothers, throughout the Valley country as well as in other parts of the county and in the city of Monticello. Mr. Reginald Jolley, who with his wife, own and operate Jolley's Cafe on the west side of the city square, is a great great grandson of James H. Ozment; James H. passing this life on October, 1861. Frank Lane, who was a brother-in-law of Alfred Ozment was the first person to be buried at the Ozment Cemetery, now known as the Valley Cemetery. [end of article]
Did You Know That? By the Drew County Historical Society November 23, 1960 BY JIMMIE FOX Two brothers, Alfred Ozment born in 1785 and James H. Ozment born in 1787, with their families, were the first settlers in the southwest part of Drew County which is commonly called the "Valley Country", Crook Township. This narrative comes mostly from Mr. Arthur Jolley who is the oldest descendant of the Ozment family, being a great grandson of James H. Ozment, the youngest of the two brothers. Mr. Jolley's mother was one of seven children (Margaret Ozment) of Robert C. Ozment and Robert C. was one of fourteen children of James H. with only two of them reaching adult age and rearing families. Alfred Ozment was more fortunate with his children rearing six of them. There were three of the Ozment brothers who came to New Orleans from England. One remained in New Orleans while Alfred and James H. made their way to South Carolina where James H. Ozment married Elizabeth Eddings. Soon after all moved to Wilson County, Tennessee which is about the center of the state, and here Alfred Ozment and Nancy Lane and the two brothers reared their children. In 1839 the Ozments started for a new land and traveling in their own boats they went down the Mississippi River to the mouth of the Red River, then up that stream to the confluence of the Ouachita River, following the Ouachita to Camden, Arkansas, here the Ozments remained for two years and in the autumn of 1841 they again got on the move, going back down the Ouachita, when the water stage was favorable, to the mouth of the Saline River and coming up that small river to that place that has since carried the family name of the Ozments, Ozment Bluff. Here the two brothers each obtained a land grant of two hundred acres of ground and at the ages of 54 and 55, they began life anew in the deep virgin forest, right on the banks of the Saline River. The Ozments traveled in two boats; one for their livestock and one for their families. The livestock consisted of a few yoke of oxen and one pair of mules. The Ozments brought with them a small nursery stock, of an apple which became known as the "Ozment" apple and is said to have been of a very fine flavor and at one time grown considerably in the Valley country. They allowed a nursery in Bradley County to try to further develop the apple but the nursery has since ceased to operate. It seems that it was a few years, perhaps several, before other settlers followed the Ozments in this part of the county and in the meantime the younger ones of the family were obtaining choice land patents and building homes, some of them in time acquiring considerable holdings. Robert C. Ozment at one time was the owner of one thousand acres of land which was acquired both by settlement and purchase.

I started out with a certified genealogist that got me started on the right track with sources. I was amazed at how fast that guy could find information. He taught me a lot. He was well worth the money. Then I took a course on genealogy at Amarillo College that was very informing and we visited the LDS library here. Then I met Eleanor and hit another gold mine and things just snowballed. I met so many other wonderful people who were willing to share also. Several were from my branch that I had never heard of before. It has been a true pleasure getting emails from everyone of them. I think that we have come a long way since then. We have corrected some errors and we have exchanged ideas. I am like Jackie. I would hope fifty years from now our grandchildren/great grandchildren would have a more complete record because of our efforts together and that they may keep uptodate on it. It would be wonderful if they would get to know each other. I understand your concern about the cd trees. I put my limited family on the first volumne in order to try and make future contacts. Instead I have seen it repeated on later cds without my consent, also. I will never send Family Tree Maker another one. Since I broadcast my own tree , I never use any passwords that use my mother's maiden name, my home town, my birthday, etc. and I am always cognizant of the fact that anyone may obtain this information. I have seen some trees that have social security numbers on them. Wow. I am still waiting on them to broadcast their credit card numbers. :-) I believe everyone on this list understands confidentiality but we really do not know all the list members. Personally, I send some information person to person with the ones I have known for awhile and who have helped me. Sincerely, Lon
Lon, Thank you for the well written explanation you sent to the Ozment Digest on limiting information. What started my thinking about limiting information is the fact that my family has been placed on numerous World Family Tree CD's without my permission. In this day and age I just think it is prudent to be careful. This info is going all over the world, think it over. As you know, I am very happy to share my research. Evelyn
hi lon that is exactly how i feel, i want my children and grandchildren to have up to date and TRUTHFUL information. i have pulled my hair out with all the things that were myth's so i am trying right now to get the birth dates of all the grandchildren james clinton ozment and of course some of the death dates also. i do have the names and dates of all of his children. do you just have david (he was the oldest boy)? my husband is david clinton ozment's son. let me know and i will run the names down for you. there seems to be a few problems of the towns in oklahoma where some were born. so i need to verify prior to giving it out. take care jackie carroll ozment
thanks lon i appreciate the answer, i just didn't understand what this was all about. i need to get all my ozment's out and take a look, it has been awhile since i have been able to do anything. the james clinton ozment clan is planning a reunion here in california in the spring, this is going to be lots of fun, since it has been so long since we have seen each other. seems like only at funeral's. so we decided that we needed to day just to be happy and celebrate being an ozment and or like me an ozment in-law or out-law!! take care you are doing great work jackie carroll ozment
